Blues purists were disappointed to hear McDowell pick up an electric guitar for the first time on this LP, as well as work with a young, white rhythm section. To the rest of the listeners, this session sounds pretty good, McDowell's vocals, guitar playing, and integrity coming through just as strongly as it had on his acoustic work. The title track, and the rap that opens it up, is a mini-classic in its own right -- if McDowell does not play no rock & roll, as he claims, he certainly keeps a beat pretty well. The album, as well as a second one cut at the same sessions (released on the Just Sunshine label) and some previously unreleased tracks, was released as an expanded double CD by Capitol in 1995. ---Richie Unterberger, Rovi
