Mississippi bluesman Lonnie Pitchford makes good on his claim with All Around Man. Voted as one of the 40 best under-40 blues musicians by Living Blues magazine a few years back, Pitchford is an accomplished pianist and rhythm, slide and lead guitarist, as well as a master of the diddley bow, a one-stringed instrument he has played since the age of five. Rearranging popular standards such as "See See Rider" and "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day," Pitchford blends his own style with that of his idols, namely Robert Johnson and Elmore James. Containing a little bit of everything, the record see-saws between Pitchford fronting an electric band, playing unaccompanied guitar, and playing a moving rendition of "My Sunny" on acoustic piano. All Around Man is just that, a fine introduction to the various sides of Pitchford's muse. ---Steve Kurutz, allmusic.com
