For a debut disc, this is one to make you open your eyes wide and look around. As much twang as there is in this lady's voice, when she wants to get right on down to it she can rock with anyone. A good amount of blues influence also shows in her voice and phrasing. The songs here are definitely country in feel and sensibility, but they have that little something extra that prevents them from sounding like the vacuous radio hits that pass for country music. The song that comes closest to a good old standard is "Be That Way," and it shows off her strong voice and lets those rocking influences sneak in there. The songs display a broad and open sense of music in general, and their appeal is much more broad-based than the traditional country music. The band playing behind her is tight and stays with her on all the changes, doing an admirable job in supporting her, and the sound quality is very good. --- Bob Gottlieb, Rovi
