Lou Busch was a major arranger - conductor who created an alter ego for himself in the guise of Joe 'Fingers' Carr the ragtime and honky-tonk pianist. For the first time on one compilation we present both facets of the spectacular Lou Busch / Joe 'Fingers' Carr career. All of Joe 'Fingers' Carr's hits are included: 'Lets Do It Again!', 'Music! Music! Music!', 'Maple Leaf Rag', 'Portuguese Washerwomen', 'Sam's Song', 'Down Yonder', 'Tiger Rag', 'Beer Barrel Polka', 'The Old Piano Roll Blues' and many more! In addition are his great orchestral works plus his hit recordings with wife Margaret Whiting and all three tracks from Roger and Hammerstein's 'The Kind and I'. --- jasmine-records.co.uk
This 2-CD set presents the two styles of Mr Busch from his period with Capitol Records, the first as a ragtime and honky-tonk pianist under the pseudonym of Joe "Fingers" Carr, the second as a strictly legit pianist under his own name. Before I come to the music itself, I have two minor niggles about the liner note and track list. Lou Busch played with the band of George Olsen, not Olson, and Bix Beiderbecke's piano composition is entitled "In A Mist", not "In The Mist".
Anyone who likes the honky-tonk style will be captivated by his playing on the first CD, and he wouldn't be the first to have disregarded Scott Joplin's advice that ragtime should be played slow and stately (or words to that effect). Of the 35 numbers on this disc, ten have vocals by the Carr-Hops, one of which also features Margaret Whiting who solos on another track.
Lou Busch rings the changes on the second CD, with 27 numbers from the popular and light classical repertoire, many with orchestral accompaniment. Margaret Whiting (who was married to Lou Busch at the time) reappears to provide the vocals on the final nine tracks. Many of these tracks provided hits for Lou Busch or his alter ego in the fifties, and Jasmine is to be congratulated in having gathered them all together in one compilation. --- Barry McCanna, amazon.com
