Talk about some high energy blues and full-tilt rockers. Susan Angeletti's second CD, Bittersweet, is a collection of uptempo songs from another Massachusetts singer named Susan produced by Tom Hambridge. Angeletti caught Hambridge's ear when she toured as the support band for Johnny Winter's 1999 tour, and several Bittersweet songs lean toward the blues. Tony Harrell's piano is barely contained on the rockabilly-fueled "Go To Hell," and the "The Other Side of the River" is a gritty rock tour de force that reminds me of late 70's Rolling Stones. The title cut also evokes the Glimmer Twins, thanks to Pat Buchanan's (the guitar player, not the political pundit) guitar sound that's quite a tribute to the work of Keith Richard. Tom Hambridge plays drums and contributes a prescription from the "Love Doctor" and warns of the dangers of love in "Love is a A Dangerous Thing," and here's hoping that this disc will give another singer named Susan from the Northeast more exposure. Angelletti capably tackles "Piece of My Heart," and it's a sultry and soulful reading that honors Janis Joplin, one of Susan's sources of inspiration for her second CD. --- Eric Steiner, www.cosmik.com
