If Leonard "Harmonica Slim" Riggins had lived in Chicago, he would probably have become one of the big names of the blues. But he spent his life in California - Fresno, Oakland - where his raw/down-to-earth blues couldn't reach a wide audience. That's why such a great bluesman has been so underrated and rarely recorded.
Luckyly, Trix label has captured the music of the man who was still at his best in 1995 despite his 74 years old. This record sends you back in the 50's down in Mississippi where he was born : his voice which goes through his harp mike, catches you from the beginning to the end, his hamonica playing is down home, rough and brillant, and the band is perfect - especialy Ron Thompson who has probably never played so well. ---S.
