As catchy as it is predictable, Cometas por el Cielo is one of those records that are too perfect for their own good. The band plies its usual wares on its sixth album, offering high-quality pop/rock that's really too sweet and airy to be called power pop, though that's where its roots are (as shown by the fuzz-laden opener, the one exception). Angelic singing by Leire Martínez forms a gentle contrast with the guitar-driven music, but the distortion is barely audible, and bouncy beats (sometimes electronic) and romantic melodies smooth out all the rough edges. They also go heavy on ballads, complete with pianos and strings, which really put Martínez's voice in the spotlight, though all traces of rock are absent from those numbers. On the whole, La Oreja de Van Gogh are tapping the same well of inspiration as all skilled guitar popsters, down to Avril Lavigne -- it's basically '80s pop, melody-driven and shamelessly tugging at the heartstrings just the way Bangles and Bryan Adams used to do in their respective heydays. In Oreja's case, however, the result is more similar to immaculate Japanese pop than Lavigne, with technical flawlessness prized over identity. It's just too mainstream, in the sense that these songs could have been recorded by anyone from Eros Ramazzotti (well, if he were a girl, or sang duets with one) to Kanagawa prefecture's Ikimono Gakari, and no one would have batted an eyelid. Cometas por el Cielo is a wonderful pick for those looking for sleek pop/rock done the right way, but it's telling that its biggest claim to individuality is the language of the lyrics. ---Alexey Eremenko, Rovi

"Cometas Por el Cielo" is the sixth studio album by La Oreja de Van Gogh which was released on September 13, 2011 under Sony Music. It is the second album by LOVG that is not produced by Nigel Walker. It was released in two physical editions, standard and special, and two online editions, on itunes and Spotify. All the editions differ on the Bonus track. The standard edition does not contain a bonus track, the rest of them has each one a different song as a bonus track.

Cometas por el cielo es el segundo álbum de Leire como cantante de La oreja de Van Gogh.

Con La niña que llora en tus fiestas como primer single. "Todo empieza en el local de ensayo", dice la banda. "Es allí donde la canción comienza a coger un tono diferente, apuntando en otra dirección. Había muchas ganas de temas con energía. En nuestro caso siempre son las canciones las que mandan, son mundos independientes y ellas marcan el rumbo. En este disco también han señalado el cambio de productor".

Como todo el nuevo álbum, "La niña que llora en tus fiestas" está producida por la Oreja de Van Gogh y el sueco Simon Nordberg (reconocido productor que ha trabajado con artistas como Eagle Eye Cherry o Britney Spears entre otros). "Conectamos inmediatamente", continúa el grupo. "Entendió perfectamente por donde íbamos y ha potenciado la dirección de nuestra música. Llegamos al estudio con las canciones muy elaboradas". El disco se ha grabado en Music Lan Recording Studios (Girona), mezclado en Estocolmo y masterizado por Björn Engelman en la capital sueca. El arte del álbum y la portada del single es obra del ilustrador francés Serge Birault, gran especialista en arte digital.

"En el álbum hay de todo, pero en el local ya se veía mucha necesidad de canciones con fuerza y los grandes cambios comienzan en los ensayos", afirman. "Hemos estado un año y medio componiendo y muchas tienen esa energía. Otros artistas, cuando llevan tiempo en la música suelen tender a lo acústico, a lo introspectivo… A nosotros nos pasa lo contrario".
