The beautiful soprano Barbara Hendricks takes on new territory in this recording of spirituals. And what a gift it is! Although this international superstar is normally associated with the works of Mozart, Debussy, and Puccini, it is the Negro Spiritual that Hendricks first heard as a child growing up in Arkansas. With the assistance of the amazing Moses Hogan singers, an a cappella group, Hendricks sings her heart out on every track. This disc certainly shows another facet to her formidable talent; she conveys the message of each spiritual with such genuineness that it is astounding. Hendricks has a great sense of melodic timing, especially on the unaccompanied tracks including "Never Said a Mumberlin' Word" and "My Lord, What a Mornin'." She sings in a straightforward manner that shows off her vocal technique, but she never exploits this. Hendricks' voice soars high, dips deep into her chest, seduces, and rejoices. All styles of spirituals are represented on the recording: from heart wrenching slow ballads praying for salvation, to joyous up-tempo songs about freedom and redemption.
