After his none-too-pleasant exit from German hard rock icons the Scorpions, guitar wizard Uli Jon Roth launched the next phase of his career via 1979's Earthquake album, which was released through his ostensible solo project, Electric Sun -- a psychedelic power trio fashioned in the image of his idol Jimi Hendrix's Experience. Unfortunately, Electric Sun's hippie tendencies were already severely outdated by this time, and with Roth handling the singing despite his obvious technical limitations (even with the Scorpions, he frequently insisted on sharing lead vocals with true frontman Klaus Meine), the project was probably doomed to commercial failure from the start. Indeed, no matter how categorically dazzling his guitar-playing skills, Roth's incompetence as a singer transformed Earthquake into the sort of album that made his loyal fans want to pull their hair out in frustration. On the one hand, here was the glory of Roth's guitar work, with its effortlessly fluid melodic lines, unexpected twists of the imagination, astounding improvisations, complete control of tone and texture, and not a single note wasted in the bargain; on the other, there was Uli's nasal and unruly voice, rambling on about painfully archaic flower-child subjects, with no help from his heavy German accent. And perhaps even stranger, nestled in alongside epic workouts like "Burning Wheels Turning" and the neo-classical tour de force of a title track, other songs simply found Roth and company reinterpreting his brighter moments with the Scorpions -- e.g., opener "Electric Sun," which was a pretty straightforward reworking of "Polar Nights" with altered lyrics, while "Lilac" clearly aped the midsection of "Fly to the Rainbow." All this being said, it's still impossible to recommend against Earthquake where pure guitar shredding nirvana is concerned; Uli Jon Roth's vocals may produce a certain amount of discomfort, but his jaw-dropping six-string heroics will have loyalists convulsing with delight. ---Eduardo Rivadavia, AllMusic Review

One of rock n' roll's most venerated guitar gods, Uli Jon Roth will release a very special live performance from the Nakano Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo, Japan on December 16, 2016 via UDR Music. Titled "Tokyo Tapes Revisited - Live In Japan", the performance is a celebration of Roth's classic work with the SCORPIONS, and was recorded on February 20, 2015 at the same venue as the band's classic 1978 live album "Tokyo Tapes".

Roth was a founding member of the SCORPIONS in 1973 before leaving to pursue a solo career in 1978 with his own ELECTRIC SUN. As the recognized creative heartbeat of the SCORPIONS, Roth achieved worldwide fame for his unique guitar and songwriting talents, in turn causing him to influence a plethora of modern guitar giants such as Kirk Hammett of METALLICA, Billy Corgan of SMASHING PUMPKINS and Steve Vai.

As a member of the SCORPIONS from 1973 through 1978, Uli Jon Roth helped pioneer the neo-classical style that has influenced countless guitarists to this day. His extraordinary playing can be heard on four classic SCORPIONS records, "Fly To The Rainbow" (1974), "In Trance" (1975), "Virgin Killer" (1976) and "Taken By Force". This lineup also recorded what many still consider to be one of the greatest live albums ever recorded, "Tokyo Tapes".

"At first I didn't realize the impact it had on the rock music scene," Roth told JamMagazine.com about the live album. "When I left the band in 1978, I disconnected myself from the past and was only interested in my new band, ELECTRIC SUN. I didn't follow the success of 'Tokyo Tapes'. Over time, I began to realize that musicians and fans kept referring to that album like it was something extra special. Gradually I understood why. Now I actually see the recording in a different light than what I thought back then."

Released in March 2015, "Scorpions Revisited" was a double-disc CD recorded in Hanover, Germany which saw the maestro re-harness all the collective power and poise of those original SCORPIONS classics, and re-imagine them as he feels today. --- blabbermouth.net

The Rock world's admiration for Uli Jon Roth has stood more 'tall' in regards to the dynamic adoration for his post-SCORPIONS musical offerings. Bad music? R U nuts? The man's offered significant creations in his solo career, still it must have been the distinct differentiation he traveled in - with regards to the usual Rock standards - after he departed from the Hanover-based Hard Rock legends. Well, this year's Under A Dark Sky new release from Uli comes to verify the inimitable persona of the 54-year-old solar guitarist. Indeed, an atypical yet fine-looking album…again!

ELECTRIC SUN - Uli's first vessel after departing from SCORPIONS - confirmed the Hendrix-meets-experimentalism blend wished so much by the artist (enough far from what the SCORPs offered in the 80s). A deeply political-thinking artist - even not that present in his 'sky' music - Roth dived (even) more into instrumental/symphonic/orchestra music pathways in the 90s. While joining his former multi-platinum comrades quite often onstage in gigs/festivals etc (many mumbled to his guest appearance at a SMASHING PUMPKINS gig in Germany in 2007-2008), news started to spread regarding his songwriting for a new album. And, now, here it is: Under A Dark Sky he shall ride.

Not that much of a Rock opera, as may labeled; 'a concept album' suits better. A spiritual album by a man that has not only stood the test of time but - in addition - seems to be in a rather ingenious period in his illustrious career. After a few spins you'll lyrically unveil a point-out reflection of today's world status presented by Uli and his musical companions, in a 'classical arrangement' brief songwriting elucidation and grandiose variety of tempos. OK, 'neoclassical Rock' is fine if you need just one sentence to describe the pieces in Under A Dark Sky but there's more than this, of course.

The guitarist's performance is immense: the sound, the soloing, the passion, the maturity, the inventive unfussiness. If few are the references to the ELECTRIC SUN days, the joy for admirers of albums/projects like SKY ORCHESTRA/Sky Of Avalon - Prologue To The Symphonic Legends/Metamorphosis… will grow up even more. This is helped by the successful selection of Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, RING OF FIRE, EMPIRE, ROYAL HUNT, THE CODEX) and Liz Vandall (SAHARA) who sing in multiple languages and offer such a multiplicity in emotions and prospects (helped by a whole choir at specific pieces). The same goes for the music itself, since pomp fecets exchange parts with more dramatic series then to elevate emotions in (even) white-spread Wagner-like merriments.

Of course, no use in pointing out specific songs is needed. Under A Dark Sky's eventual hope/trust should be treated as a whole. It's not a phenomenal album, still it seems to be an excellent release of symphonic/prog/neoclassical Rock in the unique Uli Jon Roth way. While being rather curious on how 'accurate' such a presentation will be onstage, Under A Dark Sky will normally be more than a good companion for a long time. --- Grigoris Chronis, metal-temple.com
