Alcatrazz is an American heavy metal band formed in 1983 by Graham Bonnet, Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea.

The band's initial line-up consisted of former Rainbow frontman Graham Bonnet, young Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen who had recently left American band Steeler, Gary Shea and Jimmy Waldo from New England and Clive Burr of Iron Maiden fame. Burr was soon replaced by former Iron Butterfly drummer Jan Uvena, who had just left Alice Cooper's backing band. Shea dubbed the group "Alcatrazz". For the first album, the bulk of the material was written by Bonnet and Malmsteen, with Waldo contributing writing to several of the tracks.

The band's debut album "No Parole From Rock 'N' Roll" surfaced in late 1983 on Rocshire Records. MTV gave decent support to the lead single "Island In The Sun" which showed a heavy Rainbow influence. Creative differences between Malmsteen and Bonnet surfaced while on tour. Due to this and his admitted desire to begin a solo career, Malmsteen quit in 1984 and formed his own band Rising Force who signed with Polydor Records. Rochsire then put out "Live Sentence", a concert recording from the recent tour of Japan. A live video concert was also produced. Malmsteen tried to prevent the release of the album but failed. Disturbing The Peace was released in the spring of 1985. The album peaked at #145 and charted for a solid 16 weeks, but Alcatrazz could never break out of their small following. A tour had to be cut short due to financial problems.

Bonnet has reformed his version of the band as "Alcatrazz featuring Graham Bonnet" with guitarist Howie Simon (Jeff Scott Soto Band/ Talisman), drummer Glen Sobel (Impellitteri/ Beautiful Creatures/ Tony MacAlpine), and bassist Tim Luce and did a tour of Japan in May/June 2007. This tour was co-headlined with another ex-Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. As he revealed in a recent interview, it was Howie Simon's suggestion to bring back the Alcatrazz name. They also headlined the BerkRock festival in Berkovitsa, Bulgaria in July 2008 and have played various West Coast USA dates including support slots for Y&T.

After taking it in the teeth from two of the '80s greatest young guitar heroes, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai (both of whom performed on but one Alcatrazz album each, before abandoning ship for greater solo glory), vocalist Graham Bonnett decided to anchor 1986's Dangerous Games to a slightly less gifted, but much better traveled guitar wiz in the plainly named Danny Johnson (ex-Rick Derringer, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Blackfoot, etc.). Unfortunately, ironically, and through no fault of Johnson's, just when Bonnett regained control of his own group, Alcatrazz wound up delivering their least distinctive album; more consistent, perhaps, than the previous year's idiosyncratic but frankly song-challenged Disturbing the Peace (Steve Vai defined), but also "safer" and utterly subservient to the 1980s' soulless mainstream rock conventions. Rare highlights such as "Ohayo Tokyo," "Only One Woman" (actually a re-recorded tune from Bonnett's first name band, Marbles), and the title track still saw the singer's passionate delivery rising victorious above the generalized, over-produced blandness (further exacerbated by that synthetic cleanliness and punched-in drums typically used throughout rock's "lost decade"). But, more often than not, utterly faceless fare like "It's My Life" and "That Ain't Nothin'" found Bonnett wallowing in a trough of mechanized AOR alongside his dispirited and long-suffering bandmates: bassist Gary Shea, drummer Jan Uvena, and, most tragically of all, keyboardist Jimmy Waldo, wasting all of that classical training on synthesized sequences a machine could have handled (sorry, Mrs. Waldo). And, for his part, though he certainly had chops to spare, Johnson only contributed truly scintillating solos to "Undercover," "Blue Boar," and the aforementioned "Ohayo Tokyo" (where he does his best Brian May impression) -- probably reflecting his selfless sideman's discipline, rather than lack of inspiration. At the end of the day, though, inspiration was exactly what Dangerous Games lacked most, as it ushered Alcatrazz towards their ignominious demise in a desperate state of (no doubt record company-assisted) formulaic coma, sounding nothing like the same band responsible for 1983's monumental No Parole from Rock'n'Roll. --- Eduardo Rivadavia, allmusic.com

Burr was reportedly only in the band for a week, and left upon discovering that the band was going to be based in the United States, as opposed to his native England. Burr was soon replaced by former Iron Butterfly drummer Jan Uvena, who had just left Alice Cooper's backing band. Shea dubbed the group "Alcatrazz". For the first album, the bulk of the material was written by Bonnet and Malmsteen, with Waldo contributing writing to several of the tracks.

A few Rainbow covers were included, including the classic "Since You Been Gone". The album would reach #133 in the US. Waldo replaced Malmsteen with Steve Vai, former Frank Zappa guitarist, despite resistance from Bonnet, and the band signed with Capitol Records. The group worked on new material and then headlined another tour of Japan which introduced Vai to the fans and allowed them to play new material from the upcoming album. A concert video was filmed from these dates.

Disturbing The Peace was released in the spring of 1985. The album was produced by Eddie Kramer who had worked with Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Triumph among others. "God Blessed Video" was the first single and video, yet MTV barely played it. The album peaked at #145 and charted for a solid 16 weeks, but Alcatrazz could never break out of their small following. A tour had to be cut short due to financial problems. Steve Vai left in order to join David Lee Roth's solo band in 1986 and the split was on good terms as it was an offer Vai could not refuse. He was replaced by guitarist Danny Johnson (ex-Axis and Rod Stewart), who recorded what would become Alcatrazz's final studio album, "Dangerous Games", which was released in the fall of 1986. There were covers of The Animals classic "It's My Life" (one of the only Rock oriented tunes) and Marbles' "Only One Woman". Bonnet had been a member of Marbles in the late 60's when they had this hit in the UK. The album failed to chart. Shortly afterward, Johnson also quit to join the band Private Life. Disheartened by an ever revolving door of guitarists, and dwindling album sales, they split up in 1987. In 1998 the Renaissance label issued "The Best Of Alcatrazz" which was a solid look back at the band's all-too brief career.

"God Blessed Video" appeared in the 2002 videogame soundtrack Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, playing on Rock station "V-Rock", a fictional radio station in the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Alcatrazz was formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, California by the legendary rock vocalist Graham Bonnet. He was a veteran of both Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Michael Schenker Group. Using Rainbow and MSG as templates, Bonnet enlisted Swedish guitar sensation Yngwie Malmsteen. The remaining band members were ex-Alice Cooper drummer Jan Uvena, keyboardist Jimmy Waldo and bassist Gary Shea - both of 70's AOR underdog New England. The group's debut album 'No Parole From Rock'N’Roll', included a hit single "Island in the Sun" often played by MTV. Alcatrazz then released “Live Sentence - No Parole From Rock’N’Roll”, live alum recorded during the band's tour in Japan. By the time Alcatrazz returned to the studio for its sophomore album, guitarist Malmsteen felt he had outgrown the group. He was let go to embark on a solo career, and the band hired ex-Frank Zappa guitarist - Steve Vai. Second studio album “Disturbing the Peace” redefined the band's vision. Lead single "God Blessed Video" was fresh, innovative and featured in high rotation on both MTV and USA's Night Flight. However, soon after release Steve Vai left in order to join David Lee Roth's solo band. He was replaced by guitarist Danny Johnson (ex-Axis and Rod Stewart), who recorded what would become Alcatrazz's final studio album. They released “Dangerous Games” in 1986 but after a short tour, Alcatrazz called it a day, and its members went on to other projects. Bonnet went on to record with guitarist Chris Impellitteri, before resuming his solo career. 1998 saw the release of “The Best of Alcatrazz”, which compiled tracks from all eras of the band, and was intended to be the final word. In 2003, bassist Tim Luce introduced Graham Bonnet to guitarist Howie Simon. At the time, Simon was working with vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Journey, Talisman). Bonnet, Simon and Luce invited drummer Glen Sobel to sit in with them at a few low-key LA concerts. The group discovered they had a unique and exciting chemistry, and in 2007 the band was invited to co-headline a sold-out Japanese tour with Joe Lynn Turner. The band rang in the 2008 New Year with Bay Area legends Y&T, and in January of 2008 Alcatrazz was a featured performer at the Fender Guitars Custom Shop’s annual ‘Fret Fest’ at NAMM. In July the band headlined the 2008 BerkRock Festival in Berkovitsa, Bulgaria. 2009 saw the band hit Mexico for the first time ever. This was followed by a successful winter tour of Europe. In 2010, Alcatrazz finally conquered Russia with a series of shows. In October of 2010, Alcatrazz headlined the “Voices Of Rainbow” tour, which covered various cities in Japan. This tour also featured ex-Rainbow vocalists Joe Lynn Turner and Doogie White (ex-Rainbow, Cornerstone, Tank).
