2016 collection. Sylvia Telles was the first female bossa nova singer; with Dolores Duran and Maysa, the most influential of her generation. She was the finest interpreter of the songs of one of the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century, the Brazilian master, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and she was his favorite vocalist. Amor de Gente Moça, like so many of Brazil's historic recordings is inexplicably out of print. Yet its importance as a landmark and a portent is undeniable. A showpiece for Jobim's writing and a springboard for bossa nova at home, it cemented Sylvia's popularity with Brazilian record-buyers and alerted North American record companies to her brilliance. Now, under the auspices of her husband and former label manager at Odeon and Elenco, Aloysio de Oliveira, she was beginning to record albums for the USA market with arrangers like Nelson Riddle and the legendary jazz guitarist Barney Kessel before, late in 1966 she lost her life in a tragic automobile accident. --- Editorial Reviews

Amor de Gente Moca (1959) est un album élégant qui se situe historiquement entre le Canção do Amor Demais (1958) d'Elizete Cardoso qui propose une première version du "Chega de Saudade" de Tom Jobim et Vinicius de Moraes et le Chega de Saudade (1959) de João Gilberto, l'album fondateur de la Bossa Nova. Amor de Gente Moca propose intégralement des compositions de Tom Jobim (avec Aloysio de Oliveira, Newton Mendonça ou Vinícius de Moraes) qui alternent des rythmes proches de la Bossa Nova ("Discussao" (en lien), "A Felicidade") avec des Samba-Cançao ("Sem Voce", "O Que Tinha de Ser"). Sylvia Telles est l'une des rares chanteuses de pré-Bossa a avoir réussi sa reconversion dans la Bossa Nova. Sa voix très jeune et très moderne préfigure l'ère des chanteuses post-Samba-Cançao qui marqueront les années 60/70 (Elis Regina, Doris Monteiro, Nara Leão, ...). Carícia is the debut LP of a singer that I learned to admire with Loronix creation, Sylvia Telles. Let’s see.

This is Sylvia Telles – Caricia (1957), for Odeon, with the participation of a young musician named Antonio Carlos Jobim as arranger and conductor on two tracks, the opening track 01 – Por Causa de Voce and the closing 08 – Foi a Noite. Maestro Leo Peracchi is also in charge of arrangements and conduction of track 06 – Chove la For a. Odeon did not credit the remaining five tracks. Caricia features Antonio Carlos Jobim songs that became standards in the following years and Sylvia Telles delivers stunning performances. Perhaps the most talented Brazilian vocalist during the 1950s and '60s, Sylvia Telles preceded the advent of the bossa nova era but quickly became one of its biggest fans, praising with tributes the excellent songwriters Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto. Telles debuted in 1955, and covered her first Jobim tune just one year later. She also recorded with Luiz Bonfá, and produced a full LP of Jobim songs, Amor de Gente Moca. By the early '60s, she had made her first trip to America, recording U.S.A. with Barney Kessel (among others) for Philips. Her husband, producer Aloysio de Oliveira, proved instrumental in her later signing to Odeon and Elenco, two labels where he worked. Telles had just recorded her second tribute to Jobim, 1966's The Music of Mr. Jobim (or Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim), when she was tragically killed in a car accident. ---John Bush, allmusic.com
