Henry Mancini – conductor

I've loved Domenico Modugno's original, light and jazzy version for years. I love the romantic words, flying, then dancing in the infinite sky and dancing then returning to your blue eyes.

When I heard Luciano Pavarotti's version, conducted by Henry Mancini, it almost about had me flying in the sky with him. As the greatest tenor, Pavarotti's version is powerful and dramatic and emotionally charged. The lyrics are different, "sweet music played only for me", "I think a dream like this will never return to me again". He doesn't sing the "returning to your eyes blue as the sky". It's still a treasure. I feel strong energy whenever I listen to this version. When he sings "penso che un sogno cosi non ritorni mai piu", it's a sad prediction sung as only he could. I join the skeptics when remembering Luciano Pavarotti singing with Bono and Michael Jackson, He wasn't trained for pop or rock.

This is a very simple, yet extremely alluring Italian song, very popular way back in the 50's in Italy, The States and more. Perhaps this is the reason Pavarotti can add new dimension, breath and passion to this romantic classic. Sung entirely in Italian, I recommend this to admirers of Luciano Pavarotti. --- Groovin' guy, amazon.com
