Norah Jones took liberty with her blockbuster success to set out on a musical walkabout, spending a good portion of the decade following 2004's Feels Like Home experimenting, either on her own albums or on a variety of collaborations. Day Breaks, released four years after the atmospheric adult alternative pop of the Danger Mouse-produced Little Broken Hearts, finds Jones returning home to an extent: it, like her 2002 debut Come Away with Me, is a singer/songwriter album with roots in pop and jazz, divided between originals and sharply selected covers. Such similarities are immediately apparent, but Day Breaks is much slyer than a mere revival. That term suggests a slight air of desperation, but Jones comes from a place of confidence on Day Breaks, happy to demonstrate everything she's learned over the years. Often, these tricks are deliberately sly: she'll pair her torchy original "And Then There Was You" with a woozy, bluesy cover of Neil Young's "Don't Be Denied" that winds up evoking Come Away with Me, then follow that up with the dense, nocturnal rhythms of "Day Breaks." She threads in versions of Horace Silver's "Peace" and Duke Ellington's "African Flower" while inviting saxophonist Wayne Shorter and organist Lonnie Smith in to play -- moves that signal that there's a strong, elastic jazz undercurrent to Day Breaks that means this record breathes more than her debut. Such a sense of quiet adventure gives the record depth, but what gives it resonance are the exquisitely sculpted songs. Jones' originals feel as elegant as time-honored standards, and all her covers feel fresh. The former speak to her craft, the latter to her gifts as a stylist, and the two combine to turn Day Breaks into a satisfying testament to her ever-evolving musicianship.
Day Breaks jest powrotem solowej Jones. Z debiutem Day Breaks łączy także obecność coverów.

Do grona moich ulubionych autorskich propozycji Amerykanki należy przede wszystkim niezwykle nastrojowe „Sleeping Wild”. Świetne wrażenie robią także It’s a Wonderful Time for Love, And Then There Was You oraz Once I Had a Laugh. W pierwszej z nich w głosie Nory wyczuwa się dużą, choć nieprzesadną pewność siebie. Delikatniej i bardziej „prywatnie” artystka brzmi w And Then There Was You – balladowej, romantycznej piosence, potrafiącej stworzyć intymny nastrój. Inaczej niż Once I Had a Laugh.

Z pośród pozostałych nagrań warto zwrócić uwagę na Flipside i Day Breaks. Obie celują w mocniejsze, gitarowe brzmienia. Pierwsza zaskakuje żywiołowym refrenem, a druga zdaje się być najnowocześniejszym numerem na płycie i piosenką, która przez to odnaleźć by się mogła na …Little Broken Hearts. Spragnionym łagodniejszego oblicza Nory polecić mogę ciepłe, urokliwe i takie „domowe” kompozycje Tragedy i Carry On. Nie sposób nie wspomnieć nic i o utworze otwierającym album. Burn, z pogrywającym subtelnie w tle saksofonem, jest piosenką osnutą delikatnym mrokiem. --- Zuzanna Janicka, allaboutmusic.pl

Say this for Norah Jones: she's determined to shake her reputation as a coffeehouse chanteuse. She only spent one album refining the jazz-folk of her unexpected blockbuster 2002 debut, Come Away with Me, before she started to stray off the reservation, singing country cabaret with the Little Willies in 2006; penning all the songs on her thick hazy 2007 album, Not Too Late; and following that with the alt-rock jape El Madmo in 2008. As the trio members -- Norah supported by Daru Oda and Andrew Borger of her backing group the Handsome Band -- adopt stage names, sport shock wigs, smear their eyes with heavy makeup, and sing songs called "Rock Yer Balls Off," they're easy to tag as "punk," but that label doesn't quite fit, even if their self-titled debut opens with a rash of songs littered with curses. There are no frantic rhythms, the guitars are always in clean, crisp tones, and by the time El Madmo hits its midpoint, the trio is already dipping into a slow groove for "I Like It Low," a song smoky enough to be an eccentric tune on a proper Norah Jones album. Here, it's a bit of an exception to the rule, but El Madmo are simply not punks. They're imps, telling silly jokes about the cool dude with the good pot, going for obvious rhymes, rolling their tongues and singing in rastaman accents, playing songs that are deliberately amateurish but sometimes accidentally turn into very good pop songs. Sometimes all this joshing around veers toward the cutesy (how could it not?), but El Madmo manage to avoid the hipster trap of being self-satisfied, possibly because they're so goofy they refuse to be taken seriously, possibly because they're skilled musicians who still can sound good when they're striving to be sloppy, possibly because Norah Jones remains a compelling vocalist even when she's singing nonsense. Any way you look at it, El Madmo isn't meant to be taken seriously; it's just a lark, but surprisingly it's almost as much fun for the listener as it is for the band. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On 2011’s Rome, singer Norah Jones, producer Brian ‘Danger Mouse’ Burton, guitarist Jack White and film score composer Daniele Luppi paid homage to old Italo-Western movies with twinkling chimes, twangy guitar riffs, and notable vocal performances. While many of the instrumentals held up without words, the concept album saw new life when White and Jones took to the microphone. On the song Black, for example, Jones’ rich textures added a sultry layer to the reflective composition. On Problem Queen, she injected the same dreamy resonance into the melody, except the results were livelier than before, thanks to the track’s rolling keys and buoyant percussion. If anything could be gleaned from the project, it’s that good things happen when Jones sings atop Burton’s arrangements.

On Little Broken Hearts, the two musicians explore the concept of heartbreak, investigating its unpleasant aspects with refreshing candour and sardonic wit. Albums about heartbreak certainly aren’t new, but Jones puts a fresh spin on the familiar topic with lovelorn musings that are wistful and carefree, meditative and ebullient. Good Morning, the album’s effective opener, is a delightfully sweet blend of airy synthesizers and melancholic strings, held together by Jones’ angelic falsetto. “I’m folding my hand,” the singer softly repeats over Burton’s oceanic production. She’s 22 carries a similar ventilated backdrop, but the result is a bit more pensive when paired with Jones’ gloomy deliberation: “You can throw away, every word I say.”

Then there’s the haunting Miriam, a morbidly sublime tune on which the singer threatens the woman with whom her man cheats. Here, Jones sings: “I’m gonna smile when I take your life.” Conversely, Happy Pills and Say Goodbye are cheery pop fare, on which the vocalist sings joyously about the break-up. Amid funky guitar grooves, Jones sounds playfully detached from said relationship. Therein lays the success of Little Broken Hearts. Unlike other disheartened recordings, some of which are more sullen than others, Jones never sounds too depressed on this set. Instead, she keeps the mood fairly moderate amongst Burton’s fluid soundtrack, setting the pace with a wry bravado that makes this album a dynamic listen, even if she’s dumping a guy. Heartbreak is inevitable if you love hard enough, yet Jones and Burton make it enjoyable. --- Marcus J. Moore, BBC Review

Norah Jones (born Geetali Norah Jones Shankar; March 30, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actress. She is a daughter of sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and Sue Jones. She is Anoushka Shankar's half-sister.

In 2002, she launched her solo music career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album Come Away with Me, a fusion of country music and pop with elements of jazz which was certified diamond album, selling over 26 million copies. The record earned Jones five Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. Her subsequent studio albums Feels Like Home, released in 2004; Not Too Late, released in 2007, the same year she made her film debut in My Blueberry Nights; and 2009's The Fall all gained Platinum status, selling over a million copies each and were generally well received by critics. Jones' fifth studio album, Little Broken Hearts, was released on April 27, 2012.

Jones has won nine Grammy Awards and was 60th on Billboard magazine's artists of the 2000-2009 decade chart. Throughout her career, Jones has won numerous awards and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Billboard named her the top jazz artist of the 2000-2009 decade.

Jones was born in 1979 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, to Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar and American concert producer Sue Jones.

After her parents' separation in 1986, Jones spent her childhood with her mother in Grapevine, Texas. She attended Colleyville Middle School and Grapevine High School before transferring to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. While in high school, Jones sang in the school choir, participated in band and played the alto saxophone. At the age of sixteen, with her parents' consent, she officially changed her name to Norah Jones.

Jones always had an affinity for the music of Bill Evans and Billie Holiday, among other "oldies".

Jones began singing in church and also took piano and voice lessons as a child. She still attends church. She considers herself spiritual and appreciates the rituals of her church but does not consider herself deeply religious.

She attended Interlochen Center for the Arts during the summers. While at high school, she won the DownBeat Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist (twice, in 1996 and 1997) and Best Original Composition (1996).

Jones attended the University of North Texas (UNT), where she majored in jazz piano and sang with the UNT Jazz Singers. During this time, she had a chance meeting with future collaborator Jesse Harris. She gave a ride to a band playing at the university whose members happened to be friends of Harris. He was on a cross-country road-trip with friend and future Little Willies member, Richard Julian, and stopped to see the band play. After meeting Jones, Harris started sending her lead sheets of his songs. In 1999, she left for New York City. Less than a year later, she founded a band with Harris which would prove to be the starting gun to her career. --- Steven J. Hendriks, imdb.com

'Til We Meet Again, the first live album released by Norah Jones, collects highlights from the tours she gave in the wake of the 2016 release of Day Breaks. The 14 songs on 'Til We Meet Again were recorded between 2017 and 2019, taken from performances given in the United States, Italy, France, Brazil, and Argentina. To Jones' credit, the album doesn't feel like it was cobbled together from different sources. The music flows easily, with Jones taking the time to stretch and solo, playing with her vocal phrasing just enough to enliven older songs and give newer tunes a lift. There are some overt surprises, such as a closing cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" that was given a week after Chris Cornell's 2017 death at the same Detroit venue where the band played their last show, but this isn't an album that upends expectations. Rather, it's a testament to the enduring elegance of Norah Jones' jazz-pop while also offering proof of the depth of her songbook. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Review

Norah Jones’ has immense global appeal as you’ll hear on this live album …Til We Meet Again, her first live album nearly two decades into her highly decorated career. Beyond the nine Grammy awards, Jones is 2020’s most live-streamed artist. Yet what might be even more surprising to many is the enthusiastic reaction she receives on this recording from fans in France, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina from performances recorded between 2017-2019. Most tracks have the pianist flanked by Pete Remm on organ, bassist Christopher Thomas or Jesse Murphy, with Brian Blade on drums. Some selections feature guitarist Jesse Harris, flutist Jorge Continentino, and percussionist Marcelo Costa.

Most of the 14 tracks are either composed by Jones or a band member with Remm and Harris factoring in. There are only three covers, one of which is Hank’s opening “Cold, Cold, Heart,” rendered in a jazz-tinged slowed tempo, faithful to the version that appeared on her 2002 debut Come Away With Me. “Don’t Know Why” and “I’ve Got to See You Again” are also drawn from that album. The setlist spans her entire career with “Sunrise” and “Those Sweet Words from 2004’s Feels Like Home;” “After the Fall” from 2012’s Little Broken Hearts; and “Flipside” and “Tragedy” from 2016’s Day Breaks. In addition, there are five from her recent singles series – “It Was You,” “Begin Again,” “Just a Little Bit,” “Falling,” and the Grammy-nominated “I’ll Be Gone.” The album closes with a powerful solo piano performance of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” a tribute to Chris Cornell recorded at the Fox Theater in Detroit just days after Cornell’s death following his performance at the same venue.

Following “Cold, Cold Heart,” Jones delivers the organ bathed “It Was You,” one of only three tracks from stateside performances. This album reveals Jones’ piano skills arguably more so than many of her studio dates. She has frequent opportunities to stretch out, consistently hitting emotive chords and the right notes, often not dazzling but revealing an uncanny rhythmic feel for simple, elegant progressions. From her 2018 performance in France, we hear Blade setting the groove for “Begin Again” as Remm’s B3 fills the spaces. Also, from France are two tunes penned by Jesse Harris – the stretched-out, “I’ve Got to See You Again,” with Blade at his finest and Jones in torch mode; and the sultry, soulful piano/organ blend of “Don’t Know Why,” given a lovely, slightly more mature reading than when first heard in 2002 to, like most of them here, a rousing audience reception.

The December 2019 performance from Rio features exquisite drum work from Blade and a slight change to the overall sound via Jorge Continentino’s fluttering alto flute on “Just a Little Bit.” It’s one of six taken from two performances in Brazil. Others are “Tragedy,” rendered with a trio of Jones, Blade, and bassist Jesse Murphy as is the pulsating, ebullient “Flipside’ with Jones animated piano spots and Murphy’s electric bass. “I’ll Be Gone” has the rhythm tandem joining in background vocals. On “Those Sweet Words” Costa joins on percussion and on “Falling,” where her piano especially sparkles, Jesse Harris adds acoustic guitar.

The core trio is aboard for “Sunrise” from Argentina while “After the Fall” from Italy features trio with Christopher Thomas on bass. The closing “Black Hole Sun” is the longest and most impactful track on the album and Jones deeply feels it. At the outset, the audience has some misplaced applause and callouts that detract from the melancholic mood Jones strives to create, but the audience soon quiets down and allows Jones to deliver the tune with requisite sentimentality.

Jones’ multiple talents, warmth, and versatility have made her one of the most successful artists of the past two decades. This is a summation of some of her best material delivered organically, unfiltered, and stripped down by her core elite bandmates. It’s an unquestionably winning combination that will keep Jones’ star beaming as bright as it ever has.

Po ukazaniu się siódmego albumu studyjnego Norah Jones "Pick Me Up From The Floor" w ubiegłym roku krytyk muzyczny Jarosław Szubrycht napisał, że świat potrzebuje takich artystek jak Norah.

"'Till We Meet Again (Live)" to album minimalistyczny i stonowany.

Nastrój ukojenia przerywa nieco wykonanie "I've Got To See You Again" z debiutanckiego "Come Away With Me" (2002) za sprawą silnie zaznaczonego rytmu. Nutę dramatyzmu wzmaga kolejna w setliście piosenka "After the Fall" z "Little Broken Hearts" (2012).

Jej solowy debiutancki album rozszedł się w 20 milionach egzemplarzy, z czego polowa nakładu sprzedała się w samych Stanach Zjednoczonych, zapewniając "Come Away With Me" status diamentowej płyty.

---PAP, wnp.pl
