On May 7th, 2014, Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic headed East on its musical journey, to the jazz stronghold of Poland. Whenever the topic of Polish jazz arises it s never long before the name Leszek Mozdzer is mentioned. The 1971-born piano virtuoso is revered like a pop star in his homeland, where his albums routinely make their way into the Polish pop charts. Mozdzer's music is deeply rooted in Polish music tradition while at the same time striving for new horizons. Everything is thrown in, from classical to jazz to pop, all interlaced and in sync with one another. Mozdzer s classical piano education enables him to explore his own worlds of sound with masterful technique. Another sparkling gem in Leszek Możdżer’s rich catalogue, Between Us and the Light (which, as far as I know, despite its English title has been published only in Poland) sees the Polish piano genius in a jazz trio context, alongside Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson and Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco. Like the previous album of this exciting trio (2005’s The Time), Between Us and the Light has garnered double platinum award in Poland. It’s not difficult to understand why. Highly recommended.

When in February 1993 Stanisław Sobóla of Polonia Records called me and offered cutting a record of Chopin music, I agreed to do so most readilly. But just as soon as I had hang up, panick took me over - Chopin a la jazz? Help me somebody!

Almost a year I hestitated before I got into the studio, since so much had taken to prepare myself mentally for the project. Mentally, which means not so much by way of practicing at the keyboard, as by thinking rather and careful listening to Chopin's music, as well as to some jazz pianists solo recordings. I felt that every concert I was playing during the period furthered me to the moment when I would sit at the piano and cut the record myself. In the meantime Andrzej Jagodziński had recorded Chopin with his trio and I'd heard news about Benek Maseli fixing to do the same. It started getting crowded in the Chopin department anyway.

Finally the date was called for three days at the Warsaw's radio and TV studio at Woronicza Street. I invited the two greats - Stańko and Namysłowski - to join the session. It has all been a terrific experience and a fantastic lesson to me. I have discarded quite a few recorded pieces leaving only the most valuable in my opinion. Generally speaking I wanted to stear clear of „remakes” of all sorts. Being an admirer of our great composer's genius myself, I knew that restyling Chopin „in a jazzy groove” would have been dealing trash and sacrilege. I tried to get out of his music things that I could use as a pretext for my own, personal playing. The Chopin's themes therefore often appear camouflaged, often marked rather than quoted. Whenever I was to quote Chopin - then I did it literally, after the original score. The material includes two jazz standards: „My Secret Love”, where the left hand figure from Prelude in A flat major, adapted to the theme's harmony, has been employed in the accompaniment (the ending, however, is the original Chopin's prelude) and „Segments” by Charlie Parker, which - as far as harmony is concerned - strictly covers the opening of Etude in A minor Op. 25 Nr 4. You'll also discover quite a lot of easy playing, which is what I personally like the most, without holding on tight to an a priori settled harmony or from.Let me hope that you'll enjoy this record, those of you who know Chopin and love him as well as the jazzfans among you. "Missa Gratiatoria" was composed on the occasion of 35th anniversary of the Academic Choir of the Gdansk University, its premiere took place during the gala concert on September 16, 2006 year at the Baltic Philharmonic. The composer, Polish jazz prodigy Leszek Mozdzer, selected one of the oldest musical forms - the Mass, and once again proved his extraordinary talents and intuition. The composition consist of eight separate although stylistically homogeneous parts that often refers to composer's jazz experience. The theme which inspired realisators of performance reach not only Shakespeare's motives with the fascinating figure of Lady Macbeth, but also ancient myth about Medea and present day events.

However we are not interested in the history and apotheosis of the crime. Drama and strangeness of human life is in this performance the point of exit to reflection about the idea of being good and evil, about one person and a group, responsibility for everything what one is doing and the wisdom to forgive, also today. Dance in this performance is not only the way of expression but also the way of understanding to each other. The key is tango motive, the dance of passion, the Theatre of our soul, the knot of sacrum and profanum.

Tango with Lady M. is also our proposition to talk, to say that the end of the century is not the end of our common, individual world. Polish Dance Theatre was laureate of the Hetman's Bulaw Prize for the best performance at the Zamosc; Theatre Summer 2001.

The Trio story started during the XIth International Jazz Festival - Jazz in the Old Town in Warsaw – July 2004. Especially for this festival Leszek Możdżer invited the Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson and Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco as a Dream Team they have performed debut repertoire which was more than enthusiastically accepted by both the audience and the reviewers.

After being widely applauded the Trio has decided to record their repertoire. In this way the first Trio studio album was released in September 2005 – Możdżer Danielsson Fresco – The Time – OM CD 001. Supported by the concert tour that took place in all major cities of Poland

Leszek Mozdzer, is a giant of jazz scene in Poland, that can be only compared to Tomasz Stanko in terms of artistic output and influence. Lars Danielsson is widely known in Europe as one of the most creative and succesful double bass players in mainstream jazz. Zohar Fresco is least known of the three, native of Israel, but of Turkish origin he is very well acquainted with both western and oriental persussion instruments which makes him invaluable addition to the trio

The creative drive behind many of the compositions on this album is down to either Mozdzer of Danielsson, but the sense of collective musicianship means that the character of each piece is very much dictated by a unity of sound and equality of contribution which rises above the common jazz tradition of composed hook, followed by a row of more or less tediously ego-trip solos.

The music on this album is very communicative, melodic, easy-to-listen. Songs comprise original comnpositions but also improvisations on medieval song, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit or Komeda's Svantetic. Krzysztof Komeda's role in Polish jazz cannot be explained in merely a few words. Genius, composer, visionary, collaborator and leader cannot fully describe him. How could this very average pianist and rather dull improviser with a medical degree make such a great impact on Polish jazz? How could all of the musicians who played with him emphasize what an overwhelming impact his music and his personality made on them? His music is still alive, inspiring new artists and conquering new hordes of listeners more than three decades after his tragically early death at the age of 38. The music of Komeda escapes simple classification and description. Gdyby nie polskie wpływy, międzynarodowy jazz znany nam dziś, byłby zdecydowanie uboższy.

Muzycy tacy jak Krzysztof Komeda, z pełnym zaangażowaniem przekładali amerykańskie dźwięki na swój własny, europejski język. Dzięki temu zawładnęli nie tylko rodzimą sceną jazzową, ale również byli inspiracją dla wielu muzyków na całym świecie. Leszek Możdżer uważany jest za jedno z największych odkryć wśród polskich muzyków jazzowych. Pianista urodził się w 1971 roku w Gdańsku, gdzie edukację muzyczną ukończył jako pianista klasyczny. Jazzem zainteresował się dopiero w wieku 18 lat, co nie przeszkodziło, by nazwisko Możdżer stało się w krótkim czasie szeroko rozpoznawalne wśród fanów jazzu nie tylko w Polsce, ale również poza nią.

W latach 1994 – 2008 oraz ponownie 2010, Leszek Możdżer wygrywa w plebiscycie polskiego Jazz Forum na najlepszego pianistę roku. Jego międzynarodową karierę pianisty jazzowego cechuje również współpraca z wieloma zagranicznymi muzykami, jak szwedzki kontrabasista Lars Danielsson, czy też inne gwiazdy, jak Pat Metheny, Lester Bowie czy Archie Shepp.

Solowy debiut Możdżera w wytwórni ACT, płyta Komeda, to hołd złożony polskiemu wyjątkowemu artyście, Krzysztofowi Komedzie, który nie tylko był uznanym pianistą jazzowym i kompozytorem, ale również znany jest ze ścieżek dźwiękowych do większości filmów w reżyserii Romana Polańskiego. Krzysztof Komeda zmarł w 1969 roku w wieku zaledwie 38 lat.

Możdżer tworzy swój pionierski styl. Wypełnia luki pomiędzy muzyką klasyczną a jazzem oraz korzysta ze swojego doświadczenia jako wykonawcy muzyki filmowej dla 20th Century Fox, czym dowodzi, że jest wiernym i empatycznym tłumaczem muzyki Krzysztofa Komedy. Nieważne czy odsłania romantyczne i duchowe pokrewieństwo w utworze Ballad For Bernt lub swoją ciemną stronę w Rosemary's Baby (najbardziej znanym utworze muzyki filmowej Komedy) czy też kiedy rozkoszuje się niekonwencjonalnym rytmem i harmonią jazzową w Crazy Girl, arcydzieło stworzone przez Możdżera znacznie przekracza jakiekolwiek ramy czy stereotypowy sposób myślenia.

Kolejny raz Leszek Możdżer ukazuje się jako muzyk romantyczny pośród współczesnych polskich pianistów jazzowych. Zbudował swoje nazwisko wykonując improwizacje na tematy Chopina i od tego czasu jego błyskotliwa muzyka nasycona melodią i bezkonkurencyjną techniką, obfituje w liryczne emocje. Możdżer manifestuje również wyjątkowe zdolności improwizacyjne, czerpiąc zwłaszcza z klasycznego kanonu w odniesieniu do polichromii, harmonii i niezwykłych ozdobników w muzyce.

I hear the phone ringing. I pick it up. A Low Voice with a characteristic metallic lustre offers me to take part in a solo piano recording in Holland as soon as possible. „I am really good at it"- the Voice tries to convince me. I can’t manage to get the number for more than a week. „I’ll call and give it to you tomorrow", I hear the invariable Voice. I follow the instructions. A coach to Rotterdam. Crumpled and hesitant, I get off on a square bathing in the afternoon sun where a man going white, with somewhat demonic face is waiting for me. His narrow eyes penetrate me. We get in the car. So far I only know we are recording in a chapel of a monastery. It looks it’s going to be interesting. After a short essential talk, a silence falls. I calm down, as I get tired by superficial talks, and the silence soothes me. I like silent people, which is probably why I instantly took to Leszek Blach Siewierski.

We reach our destination. High, solid walls made of dark red brick. At the front a large font, in the middle of the chapel, in the place of the altar – a shiny Steinway. I sit at the keyboard to strike the first chord – a fine, full tone sinking in the echo, which had been soaking by people’s prayers for hundreds of years, instantly raises my mood. I run my fingers on the keyboard – each key perfectly balanced, the keyboard even, not too deep, still rather heavy. I like them that way best.

I took some pencils and rubbers from Poland. I scatter them all on the strings curious if they sound the same as at home. They sound better... (Excerpt from attached booklet) ---amazom.com

He played and recorded with Tomasz Stanko, Zbigniew Namyslowski, Dave Liebman, Lester Bowie, Archie Shepp, Joe Lovano, David Gilmour and Pat Metheny. He wrote music for plays and films. He gives concerts all over the world. Recorded 90 CDs as a sideman or soloist. Pianist with classical technique, operating with his own the timbre, articulation, his own harmony.
