From the more archaic sounds of the Delta the ragtime sounds of the Piedmont, the Memphis country blues scene took the best of both worlds and shaped a sound that is uniquely Memphis. Memphis was a major stopping-off point for itinerant musicians making their way to St.Louis, Chicago, and other points in the North. This transient activity gave birth to the rich Memphis sound. With Memphis being at the heart of the crossroads of the blues, record companies made extensive field trips in the 1920's and 30's to record local talent in various regions of the country, Utilizing the Peabody and Gayoso hotels, and the Auditorium in downtown Memphis as make-shift recording studios, these recording pioneers captured some of the finest music the Mid-South had to offer. The selections on this album are the "creme de la creme" of the musical talent that made Memphis the "home of the blues." ---Editorial Reviews
