Wow! This gal has a great set of powerful pipes. Zola kicks off the set with a candid blues titled "Meatgrinder" and the lyrics are anything but pretty but they certainly make you think. The Los Angeles based blues singer pulls no punches and it seems little wonder that she is among the top ten female blues performers in the nation according to several polls.

Influenced by a wide variety of blues and rock legends, Zola Moon treats a song with the tenderness of a road grader. Just get out of the way and listen. There is a real echo of Big Mama Thornton and Janis Joplin and I'd be the last to complain about that.

All kidding aside, Zola is a truly honest talent and fills a very bright spot on the blues scene today. She performs much of her own material and is accompanied by a fine bunch of West Coast blues musicians. I loved "I Don't Think So" and "Doll House". On "Lover Man", Zola shares the vocal lead with Cynthia Manley, another fine talent. The duet of powerful voices cannot be ignored. As a storyteller, Zola reaches new heights on "Same Old Story", a touching tale of sorrow and pain accompanied by the young pianist Joe Kennedy.

The set ends appropriately with a blues titled "The Bottom." Zola blows a little harp on this one and fills the five-minute track with her gutsy vocal style. This is a hell of a refreshing blues album. --- jazzreview.com

Zola Moon is the powerhouse and the queen of present-day Americana-roots-music and blues/blues-rock. Her no-holds-barred, incendiary live performances are renowned. She is a prolific songwriter and her CDs are made up almost wholly of her own original compositions. Her song writing and singing have received rave reviews from magazines, newspapers, radio DJs, and web sites around the world. Both the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Daily News have called Zola "the South Bay Legend," and the Los Angeles Weekly has called her "one of the Southland's best-kept musical secrets".

Zola is the recipient of a South Bay Music Award for Blues Artist of the Year, has been chosen Pick of the Year for Best Female Blues by Musicdish.com, has been named one of the Top 10 Artists of the Year by Femmusic.com, and is the recipient of an Elite Artist Award from TheGlobalMuse.com. Her CDs are played on the internet and on the radio in the United States and internationally.

Zola has appeared and performed with Albert Collins, Etta James, Linda Hopkins, Albert King, Big Mama Thornton, Al Kooper, and Eric Burdon, among others, and has appeared and been interviewed on the House of Blues Radio Hour. Her recordings of her own original songs can be heard in the soundtracks of a number of movies.

Zola is one of the very few blues artists to have ever been asked to perform at the Playboy Jazz Festival (where her reception by the crowd was nothing short of phenomenal), and she has performed at numerous other festivals and concerts. Zola has been performing for 25 years and she recently released her 7th CD. --- daz.com

“For me, It’s always about the music,” says Zola Moon. “It’s like a painter who just has to paint that painting. I do it because I can, because I’m lucky enough to be able to do it, and because I have to. It’s an unstoppable drive. Artists do it because something makes them do it. Not the money,” she laughs. “Although, sometimes that helps.”

Blues singer Zola Moon has been a consistent presence in Los Angeles for more years than we have fingers and toes, going back to the early and mid-1980s. When I first interviewed her, she had just released “Lost in the Blues” on the prestigious Kent Records label. That was early in 1995. The deal with Kent soured. “When I wanted to start writing my own material and controlling what I sang more, that became a problem for my guitar player and then musical director. So I fired him and the whole band. But we had had a long successful run. Because of my insistence on original material, we were selling original blues shows for 13 years, hammering out an identity, which can be very hard to do. We opened up a lot of doors for a lot of blues acts. We proved to the owners and bookers of a lot of venues, at a time when there were pretty well no blues venues, that the blues was viable.” That was ten years ago, and a year after that Zola released her first record of her own original material, “Almost Crazy.” Her fifth and latest CD of original songs (her seventh overall) “Wildcats under My Skin” is about to be released.

‘Tales of love and desperation” contains ten original songs that capture the heart and soul of the listener like no one else. Like the late, great Jim Morrison, Zola takes the blues and rock and dares to explore the forbidden emotions that are locked away inside of us all. From the opening line of the album’s first track, ‘Never Give Up On Ya,’ to the final heart pounding ‘Mechanical Beast,’ Zola growls and croons until the word ‘caution’ is but a distant memory. I found it hard to pick a favorite track on this CD, except maybe ‘Hard Liquor,’ for its simple honesty and heartbreaking original melody. Zola doesn’t just write a poem and then put it to music. It is obvious to the listener that Zola and her music are one and the same breathtakingly beautiful...--Pat Benny

"A charismatic singer with a restless, wailing sound, Zola Moon's literate original tunes exude a Charles Bukowski wit and a lyrical immediacy. This longtime vet remains one of the Southland's best-kept musical secrets."--LOS ANGELES WEEKLY

"Zola Moon's pretty damn scary; she can belt 'em out like nobody's bidness. When she croons, she grabs you by your throat, knocks you out flat, sits on your chest, and makes sure you know how much she's hurtin'."--ORANGE COUNTY WEEKLY

"I was too young for Billie Holiday; I never got to see Janis Joplin perform, but I can tell the world that I've seen Zola Moon and, friends, she is something to see. Zola Moon is an artist you can tell your grandchildren about."--SOUTHBOUND BEAT

"Zola Moon's talent as a singer and a songwriter cannot be denied. She can be hurt by the end of a relationship or by economic hardship or by the state of the world, but she never gives in to self pity or despair; she's too tough, gutsy and hip for that. She keeps bouncing back and fighting back, because that's her nature; her voice won't be stilled. And what a voice it is, capable of hard-rockin' joy, bitter sorrow, deeply felt love."--THE SCOPE
