Of late the Eric Clapton-Steve Winwood team-up has been getting a bit of word of mouth. Here’s one team-up that isn’t that well publicised.

This is what the fan site, geetarz.org, commented: “An absolutely essential EC performance. Begins with a great funky version of Right Place, Wrong Time with EC contributing hot guitar solos, then segues into an absolutely gut-wrenching performance by EC of St. James Infirmary - easily one of his best performances EVER. An acoustic How Long Blues with EC on dobro and then the uptempo Roberta, followed by an absolutely unique R&B rearrangement of Layla.”

This show once again confirms what many fans feel: Clapton may be great on his own but when he has someone to work against (think Layla or even Steve Winwood), the shows invariably become much more exciting. Here it is Dr John’s fine vocals that act as a counterpoint to Clapton’s playing.

It may be a short set but it’s a real fun honky-tonk session. And if Clapton sounds a little like Santana on Right Place, Wrong Time and even on St James Infirmary, maybe it’s time for these two greats to go on tour together. ---bigozine2.com

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood launched their Japanese Tour on 17 November in Sapporo, before heading south to Yokohama for a concert on 19 November. Although the first concert was a solid 20-song strong performance, the second night in Yokohama held a big surprise for Japanese fans. During the acoustic set, a re-arranged "Wonderful Tonight" was peformed - believed to be the first time this has happened in concert since the song was released on Slowhand in 1977. One fan in attendance told Where's Eric! that it was an absolutely beautiful version. --- ericclapton.com

Clapton is the 20th studio album by English blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Clapton. It was released on 27 September 2010 in the United Kingdom and the following day in the United States. The album is Clapton's first studio album in four years following his duet with J.J.Cale in The Road to Escondido (2006), and is made up of a mix of new material and cover songs. Clapton has played tracks off this album such as "Rocking Chair" and "When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful" live on tour.[citation needed] Clapton has said, "This album wasn’t what it was intended to be at all. It’s actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen." Clapton debuted at number seven on the UK Albums Chart, his highest charting album on the chart since Reptile from 2001. In the United States it entered the Billboard 200 at number six, selling 47,000 copies in its first week on the chart. The album reached top five positions in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

According to review aggregator Metacritic, Clapton received an average of 72 out of 100 indicating generally favorable reviews from music critics, based on ten critiques. In his review of Clapton for Allmusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine said that "there's no record quite like Clapton in [Eric Clapton's] catalog," and goes on to say that the album "flows easy, the blues never hitting too hard, the New Orleans jazz never getting too woozy, the standards never too sleepy, the sounds subtly shifting but changing all the same." In David Fricke's review for rollingstone.com he called Clapton, "a serenely masterful engagement with roots — the guitarist co-wrote just one original — that is all over the place in repertoire yet devoutly grounded in its roaming. Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean" comes with an earnest, sandy Clapton vocal and lighthouse beams of trumpet by Wynton Marsalis. Little Walter's "Can't Hold Out Much Longer" has the crusty flair of Clapton's 1965 and '66 recordings with John Mayall. A pair of Fats Waller romps are decked out in New Orleans brass and pianos, one of them played by Allen Toussaint."

Born March 30th, 1945 in Surrey, England, Eric Clapton became interested in the blues at a young age and learned to play guitar as a teen. After joining several bands, he made a name for his guitar playing with The Yardbirds and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. But Clapton found his first taste of international success with the supergroup Cream. Problems caused them to disband and soon he formed Blind Faith. Following their breakup, Clapton released his solo debut and formed Derek and the Dominos. Despite success with "Layla," depression and substance abuse took over. He made his comeback in the early 70s and has been steadily releasing Grammy-winning material ever since. --- watchmojo.com

Although Eric Clapton has released a bevy of live albums, none of them have ever quite captured the guitarist's raw energy and dazzling virtuosity. The double live album Just One Night may have gotten closer to that elusive goal than most of its predecessors, but it is still lacking in many ways. The most notable difference between Just One Night and Clapton's other live albums is his backing band. Led by guitarist Albert Lee, the group is a collective of accomplished professionals who have managed to keep some grit in their playing. They help push Clapton along, forcing him to spit out crackling solos throughout the album. However, the performances aren't consistent on Just One Night -- there are plenty of dynamic moments like "Double Trouble" and "Rambling on My Mind," but they are weighed down by pedestrian renditions of songs like "All Our Past Times." Nevertheless, more than any other Clapton live album, Just One Night suggests the guitarist's in-concert potential. It's just too bad that the recording didn't occur on a night when he did fulfill all of that potential. --- Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Guitar icon and three time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Eric Clapton releases his 19th solo studio album simply titled CLAPTON.

Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, the CD features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond—and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks.

Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

"This album wasn’t what it was intended to be at all," says Eric Clapton. "It’s actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It’s an eclectic collection of songs that weren’t really on the map—and I like it so much because if it’s a surprise to the fans, that’s only because it’s a surprise to me, as well." ---amazon.com

In its way, Backless is a seductive record, if you're attracted to the interplay of Clapton's dolorous voice and Marcy Levy's raspy backup vocals, George Terry's slide guitar and Glyn Johns' pristine production. It's disheartening only if you're still looking for a Clapton album with a hint of power and fire he brought to his best work -- from Bluesbreakers to Layla. Me, I made my peace with great expectations a while back. I like the new LP, but it wouldn't make any difference if I didn't.

There's nothing calamitous on it. Oh, the the two Bob Dylan songs must have been dredged up from the Sub-Basement Tapes, but "Walk Out in the Rain" contains a line that may be Dylan's definitive statement for this epoch: "If you don't want my love, it's a pity." And J.J. Cale's "I'll Make Love to You Anytime" must be the most dispassionate statement of those sentiments ever written. But even the "Lay Down Sally" remakes ("Watch Out for Lucy," "Promises," "Golden Ring") are redeemed, most often by Terry's stinging slide work. Clapton records are still a guitar fan's delight, only as often as not, it isn't Clapton's guitar that incites the listener.

There are times when Eric Clapton and his Tulsa compatriots sound like a Midwest/British version of the Band. This is noticeable immediately on "If I Don't Be There by Morning," the album's second Dylan item and its Big Mumble. It comes through in the rolling accordion notes of "Golden Ring" and on "Tulsa Time," the only attempt Backless makes to rock out.

But Clapton almost never sounds like the Clapton of legend. He comes closest, naturally, on "Early in the Morning," a traditional blues all too obviously intended as a piece of filler on side two. For all of you still holding out for something bigger (or better), I can only recommend the immortal words of Howlin' Wolf:

    I asked her for water
    She brought me gasoline
    That's the terriblest water
    That I ever seen.

Slowhand knows what I mean.

- Dave Marsh, Rolling Stone, 12-28-78.
