The band's first American LP, issued more than two years after they had put out their first British recordings, consisted of a dozen tracks selected from various U.K. mid-'60s sessions. It was a reasonable enough introduction to the band for those who hadn't heard most of those, an audience, which, at the time, included virtually all Americans. Along with their first U.S. smash, "Gimme Some Lovin'," it had several British hit singles: "Somebody Help Me," "Keep on Running," and "When I Come Home." The remainder was comprised of fair, though not great, covers and derivative group originals. ---Richie Unterberger, AllMusic Review

The 1960s R&B act The Spencer Davis Group is featured here in its original lineup. Composed of Spencer Davis, Steve Winwood, Muff Winwood, and Pete York, the group formed in England 1962. Hitting the UK charts with their debut single "Keep on Runnin'," The Spencer Davis group joined its peers as part of the "British Invasion." A feature-length documentary from 1967 gives viewers an inside look at the daily routine of one of the major groups of the 1960s. Comprised of rare archive footage of the original lineup as seen in the recording studio, concerts, and public relations activities, the documentary was shot in 1967, as the band underwent crucial changes and toured Europe. An exclusive interview sheds further light on the individual band members, featuring Steve Winwood, who went on to gain even greater acclaim as a member of Traffic, as well as in his solo career, and Steve's brother Muff. In a rare live performance from 1966, the group performs many of its hits, including: "Keep on Runnin'," and "I'm a Man." --- flixster.com

The Spencer Davis Group may be the most underrated group in the British Invasion. The band had a tight, swinging sound, a nice balance between guitars and keyboards, and a tasty selection of musical influences - not to mention rock's greatest white-soul singer (Stevie Winwood). Their albums featured some of the best British blues and R&B, along with pop-rock to rival what the Beatles were doing at the same time (this was pre-"Sgt. Pepper," after all). Perhaps one day the SDG will finally get their due. ---Steven R. Seim, amazon.com

Stevie Winwood and Muff Winwood had left the Spencer Davis Group just a few months before the summer 1967 release of their second U.S. album, which nonetheless was entirely comprised of songs done by the original lineup. Like their first U.S. album, Gimme Some Lovin', it was a more or less arbitrary assortment of songs that had been recorded by the band at various points in the mid-'60s. And again, the big hit, "I'm a Man," was a classic soul-rock group original that outclassed everything else on the record. Otherwise it was standard British R&B-rock that varied from average to very good. The standouts were their covers of John Lee Hooker's "Dimples" and the relatively little-known American soul tunes "I Can't Stand It" and "Look Away." The cooking Stevie Winwood-penned instrumental "On the Green Light" had dynamic organ and blues guitar. The 2001 CD reissue on Sundazed adds add bonus tracks from the same era, including some of their best efforts: the percolating cover of "Watch Your Step," the anguished original blues ballad "Hey Darling," "Let Me Down Easy," "Strong Love," and the instrumental "Waltz for Lumumba," which anticipates Traffic with its unusual percussion and jazzy accents. ---Richie Unterberger, allmusic.com

The group's first album is basically a reflection of their early repertoire and very heavy on the R&B/soul standards. Dominated by covers of Ike & Tina Turner, the Coasters, John Lee Hooker, Little Walter, Brenda Holloway, and others, only three of the tunes are original. Two of these are written by Stevie Winwood, the other by Spencer Davis; Winwood's mid-tempo soul number "It Hurts Me So" is easily the best of them. Winwood is in fine voice and the group is energetic, but this is neither as good as their best work nor nearly as good as the best British R&B albums of the era by competitors like Them and the Rolling Stones. Includes their first two British singles, "Dimples" and "I Can't Stand It." ---Richie Unterberger, AllMusic Review

Spencer Davis Group is a sixties beat group from the United Kingdom. The band is best known for their Top Ten singles "Gimme Some Lovin" and "I'm a Man." Founded in 1963, the group went through several different lineup changes during their three stints as a performing act with guitarist Spencer Davis being the sole founding member. Davis continues to tour around the globe with two separate backing bands who support him in North America and Europe.

Spencer Davis, drummer Peter York and brothers bassist Muff and singer/keyboardist Steve Winwood as the Rhythm and Blues Quartette. The band changed their name to the Spencer Davis Group after they were signed to Fontana Records. They released Their First LP in 1965 and it was a Top Ten hit for the band in the U.K. ---Joseph Ulibas, axs.com

With this 16-track disc, RPM has assembled the album that the Spencer Davis Group might have put out in late 1967. As it was, just two singles appeared from the April-December 1967 lineup (Davis, drummer Pete York, Eddie Hardin on keyboards, and Phil Sawyer on vocals), although some material would come out on the soundtrack to Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush and the 1968 With Their New Face On album. To make matters more confusing, some of the songs released by the group in 1967 and 1968 were re-recorded or remixed for subsequent releases, sometimes replacing or overdubbing the vocals on the first versions. The important thing, though, is: does the music merit this kind of vault combing? It's kind of ho-hum, to be honest. All of these tracks were from the lineup Davis assembled just after the departure of Stevie Winwood and Muff Winwood. They were acceptable, but just a face in the crowd, really, with the absence of Winwood. From a strictly collector-oriented viewpoint, though, this CD is valuable for the inclusion of the original single versions of "Time Seller" and "Don't Want You No More"; the fey psych-pop B-side of their second single, "Sanity Inspector"; the original versions of "Morning Sun" and "Feel Your Way"; and previously unissued alternate versions of four songs from the Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush soundtrack. This also has all of the official versions of the songs the band got onto the Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush soundtrack (except "Waltz for Caroline," as that was recorded with Stevie Winwood still in the lineup). Got all that? The one thing you might want to know, when all the discographical complications are pushed aside, is that this is likely the best post-Winwood Spencer Davis Group disc available. --- Richie Unterberger, allmusic.com
