Although Bang Tango was often lumped in with the whole '80s glam metal movement (perhaps due to their pretty-boy looks and the fact that they hailed from Los Angeles, CA), the hard-rockin' quintet was one of the few L.A. glam groups to incorporate funk into its sound -- around the same time as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More made it acceptable to do so. Their lineup consisted of Joe Lesté (vocals), Kyle Stevens (guitar), Mark Knight (guitar), Kyle Kyle (bass), and Tigg Ketler (drums), and gained the interest of Mechanic/MCA shortly after the quintet issued the in-concert recording Live Injection in 1987. Their major-label debut, Psycho Cafe, was issued in 1989, and despite MTV's Headbanger's Ball program giving some air time to their single/video "Someone Like You," the album failed to break the band into the big time.

The group continued to issue albums during the early part of the '90s -- 1991's Dancin' on Coals, 1992's Ain't No Jive...Live!, and 1994's Love After Death -- but with the emergence of the Seattle movement, bands like Bang Tango became passé with most of the metal community. The band broke up shortly thereafter, with bassist Kyle joining former Faster Pussycat frontman Taime Downe's industrial project, the Newlydeads, while Lesté did some time as a stand-in for L.A. Guns (Ketler and Knight also resurfaced in the group the Worry Beads). In 1998, Kyle and Lesté resurrected the Bang Tango name for the 1998 release Live (on the Cleopatra label). A best-of compilation, Greatest Tricks, saw the light of day in 1999, as did United and Live the same year. In 2001, Lesté formed a more modern-sounding alt-metal outfit, Beautiful Creatures, issuing a self-titled debut the same year on Warner Bros., and toured as part of Ozzfest. Mark Knight also formed a new band, Gravy. ---Greg Prato, AllMusic Review

The definition of cool is when you order a new album through the mail and the return address is from the band. The definition of sad is when you order a new album through the mail and the return address is from the band because they are no longer popular enough for mainstream distribution. This is the story of Bang Tango's new album Pistol Whipped In The Bible Belt.

Even from their beginnings in 1989 Bang Tango have been a day late and a dollar short. The turn of the decade marked the death of hair-metal, therefore a promising band with the potential to become widely successful unfortunately never made it past cult following. It's a shame too because Bang Tango's first two albums, 1989's Psycho Cafe and 1991's Dancin' On Coals (the song "My Saltine" was even featured in the awful Richard Grieco spy comedy 'If Looks Could Kill'), are a couple of outstanding pieces from the '80s metal era.

Bang Tango isn't your average hair band though. They adventurously mixed funk and metal, creating this amazing bass-heavy sound which set them apart as innovators rather than just another clone of the popular genre. Pure and simple, Bang Tango is a group of road warriors who live life on the road and their brand new album Pistol Whipped In The Bible Belt captures their spirited passion for rock 'n' roll. In fact, the songs "Our Way" and "Live Life" declare Bang Tango's purpose for continuing to create and perform live. Lyrics like, "Some people say we'll never make it... we keep on moving, we keep on flyin', we do it all without even dyin'... I guess you could say it's our way," define the motto of an underdog that refuses to quit.

I caught Bang Tango in Springfield, IL on April 15, 2010 at a free show, and despite their being just ten of us in the audience, the band still put on an enthusiastic set and mingled with fans after the concert. Singer Joe LeSte even joked with me, as he signed autographs and posed for pictures, that sometimes they play to five people and other nights a thousand. However, they always enjoy themselves and don't plan on retiring anytime soon. You definitely have to admire Bang Tango's commitment to their craft. Pistol Whipped In The Bible Belt is vintage sounding Bang Tango -- from the sleazy opener "Dick In The System" to the unique "Boom Box Seance", Bang Tango has released ten new songs that any fan of the band will appreciate. The only downside to the album is an unnecessary spoken word opener at the beginning of "Live Life", but the song itself more than makes up for the lame attempt at comedy, which has got to be an inside joke us fans won't comprehend. Just like L.A. Guns' triumphant Tales From The Strip and Ratt's superb Infestation, Pistol Whipped In The Bible Belt is yet another new album from a battle-scarred band that actually sounds like it could have been released in the '80s. Bang Tango's latest release indubitably lives up to their reputation. --- Graham LaMontagne, sleazeroxx.com

Unlike some '80s Sunset Strip metallists that went away for a period of time come grunge's reign during the early to mid-'90s, Bang Tango remained together for much of the anti-glam decade (save for a couple of brief hiatuses). And they're still specializing in melodic hard rock, as heard throughout their 2006 effort From the Hip. Singer Joe Lesté still possesses the talent of shapeshifting his voice to resemble several renowned rock frontmen, including a mixture of Axl Rose and Scott Weiland on the album opening "It's All OK," as well as Bon Scott and Brian Johnson on "Go Go Go." But one area that Bang Tango still sorely needs some assistance in is the lyric writing department -- the words to the aforementioned songs make Spinal Tap's "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" sound like a Shakespearian sonnet. ---Greg Prato, AllMusic Review

Unlike some '80s Sunset Strip metallists that went away for a period of time come grunge's reign during the early to mid-'90s, Bang Tango remained together for much of the anti-glam decade (save for a couple of brief hiatuses).
