The flagship band for East German rock, Puhdys formed officially in 1969 in Oranienburg, although members of the band had been working together since 1965. The band name was made up of the first letters of the initial members' first names, which at the start featured Peter Meyer on keyboards, Udo Jacob on drums, Harry Jeske on bass, and Dieter Herttrampf on vocals and guitar. By 1969 Gunter Wosylus had replaced Jacob on drums and guitarist and singer Dieter Birr had come aboard. In 1971 the group began to record for the state-run Amiga Records label, releasing its first single that year and a debut album in 1974, all featuring a progressive rock feel that drew heavy inspiration from British hard rock groups like Deep Purple. In the mid-'80s Puhdys added some new wave and synth touches to the mix in an attempt to stay timely, but by the end of the decade the group disbanded, only to reunite in 1991 for a concert that led to a revival for the band, and Puhdys have been touring and recording in various configurations ever since. --- Steve Leggett, allmusic.com

Die Kultband startet durch - in das 45. Jahr ihrer Karriere.

Vor Jahren, als die Rocker prophezeiten: "Wir spielen bis zur Rockerrente", da hielten das viele für einen PR-Gag, mancher vielleicht auch für eine Drohung.

Längst aber ist klar, daß es ein ernstgemeintes Versprechen war, das einzulösen sie auf dem besten Wege sind.

Jedenfalls stehen die PUHDYS 2014 bereits das 45. Jahr auf der Bühne - ein Jubiläum, wie es heute in Künstlerkreisen nicht sehr verbreitet ist. In unserer hektischen Zeit überwiegen eher die kurzlebigen Künstlerkarrieren.

Die PUHDYS aber sind seit ihrem Auftritt im Freiberger "Tivoli" 1969 landauf, landab unterwegs, geschätzt von den Veranstaltern, weil die Band eine Garantie für volle Häuser und gute Stimmung ist, gefeiert von den Fans, weil sie die Musik der PUHDYS lieben - bewundert auch von Kollegen, die wissen, was 42 Bühnenjahre an Arbeit, Disziplin, Einfallsreichtum und Ausdauer abverlangen.

Man rätselt verschiedentlich, worin dieser langandauernde Erfolg eigentlich begründet sein könnte. Da ist die Rede von musikalischer Unkompliziertheit, von einfacher Sprache, von lebensnahen Themen und Botschaften, auch von stimmlicher Unverkennbarkeit, von Musiker-Persönlichkeiten und Glaubwürdigkeit.

Mancher schwafelt auch von Nostalgie und versteht die Welt nicht mehr. Andere sehen darin eher den Ausdruck eines bestimmten Lebensgefühls, das Bekenntnis zu einer Sicht auf die Dinge des Lebens, die viel mit Ehrlichkeit, mit Moral, Identität und Integrität, auch mit Widerstand gegen Vereinnahmung zu tun hat.

Einig sind sich alle, daß da etwas Besonderes sein muß, was die PUHDYS auszeichnet. Ihr Auftreten ist aufrichtig und echt, sie spielen mit Spaß an der eigenen Sache, sie nehmen ihre Fans, aber nicht sich selbst so ernst und sind jederzeit für einen Spaß zu haben.

Das alles zusammen macht die PUHDYS zu dem, was sie sind, eine der erfolgreichsten Bands in Deutschland - ein Phänomen. ---puhdys.com

Die Puhdys sind eine 1969 gegründete deutsche Rockband. Sie zählen zu den bekanntesten Rockbands der DDR und haben seither zahlreiche weitere Alben veröffentlicht.

"Irgendjemand im Saal, der auf Rock'n'Roll steht?" rief Maschine in die tosende Menge. Anlässlich ihres 10-jährigen Bühnenjubiläums luden die Puhdys im Januar 1979 in den alten Friedrichstadtpalast. Viele gute Konzerte, wie die von Louis Armstrong oder Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, hatte der alte Bau in Berlin erlebt. Die Puhdys rockten das Haus, woraus dieses Life-Album entstand, das als das erste Life-Album einer DDR-Rockformation gilt. Dass hier die Post abging, ist unüberhörbar. Mit Titeln wie "Sturmvogel"; "Ikrarus2"; "Doch die Gitter schweigen"; "Alt wie ein Baum" oder einem Rock'n'Roll-Medley heizten die Band ihren Fans so richtig ein, die stimmgewaltig dagegenhielten. Angetrieben von dem harten, aggressiven Schlagzeug von Gunther Wosylus boten die Männer um Dieter Birr eine spektakuläre Show vor ausverkauftem Haus, das kurz danach geschlossen wurde. Gunther Wosylus ging noch im gleichen Jahr eigene Wege. Geblieben ist dieser phantastische Konzertmitschnitt.

Die Puhdys are a veteran German rock band, formed in Oranienburg, in what was then East Germany, in 1969, although they had been performing together, with various lineups, as the Puhdys since 1965. They continue to record and tour. Although they are especially popular in their native eastern Germany, the Puhdys enjoyed significant success outside the GDR, and were one of the first East German bands allowed to tour West Germany. They are one of the most successful German-language rock groups. The first Puhdys album, released in early 1974, was very successful, and remains a well-regarded album among the band's fans, despite being in part derivative of western artists; this was due in part to the political impossibility of using the original songs in Paul and Paula, and director Carow's desire for close German-language equivalents. The band followed up Sturmvogel with an album of 1950s and early 1960s rock'n'roll songs, Rock and Roll Music, which was one of the band's top sellers in East Germany, in part due to the unavailability of the records by the original artists; it sold less well in the west. The band asked Chuck Berry himself for the lyrics to "Brown Eyed Handsome Man"; he replied that he had forgotten them. It was followed by the harder rocking Perlenfischer (Pearl Diver, 1977) and 10 Wilde Jahre (10 Crazy Years, 1978), the latter of which included "Doch die Gitter schweigen" (Still The Prison Bars Are Silent, later recorded in English as "Prison Walls Are Silent"), an epic tune that was commissioned for celebrations of the GDR's 30th anniversary in 1979; its topic, a prisoner's longing to escape, slipped past the censors.

Following Wilde Jahre, the band produced a well regarded live double album recorded at Berlin's Friedrichstadpalast theater.

Die Puhdys – weterani niemieckiego rocka, zespół założony w 1969 roku w Oranienburgu (ówczesna NRD), chociaż wszyscy grali razem w różnych składach jako Puhdys od 1965. Najbardziej popularni byli w swojej rodzinnej NRD, ale również dużą popularnością cieszyli się w innych krajach bloku wschodniego m.in. w Polsce. Jako jeden z pierwszych zespołów z byłej NRD mogli koncertować w RFN. Są jednym z najbardziej znanych niemieckojęzycznych zespołów rockowych.

It compiled the band's singles up to that point, including three of the four songs from the film ("Geh zu ihr," Go To Her, based on Slade's "Look Wot You Dun "; "Wenn ein Mensch lebt," If Someone Lives, which drew heavily on the Bee Gees' "Spicks and Specks"; and "Zeiten und Weiten," Times And Widths); the fourth ("Manchmal im Schlaf," Sometimes In Sleep) was included on the second album, released in 1975, which was somewhat less well received, although it included "Steine" (Stones) and "Lied für Generationen" (Song For Generations), two of the band's better-known songs, and it arguably established a more distinctive performance style than the first album.

Whatever the weaknesses of their second album, the Puhdys' third, Sturmvogel (Stormbird, 1976) made up for them, and proved to be very popular. Avoiding hard rock, the band recorded a cover version of "Schlafe ein und fang die Träume" (Fall Asleep And Reach Your Dreams), by the Polish band 2 plus 1 (which had also recorded the song in German; its original title was "Kołysanka Matki," Mother's Lullaby). Sturmvogel also included fan favorites "Lebenszeit" (Lifetime), "Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde" (Journey To The Center Of The Earth), and the title track.
