It’s been four years since Godsmack released ‘The Oracle,’ their most recent studio album. Which isn’t exactly an eternity, but when taken into account that their album prior to that, ‘IV,’ was separated by another four year gap, it starts to feel like new music from the Boston-area bruisers doesn’t come too often. This makes the arrival of ’1000hp,’ their new effort and sixth overall, seem almost like the reemergence of an old, familiar acquaintance.

And indeed, the band, led by tattooed spark plug Sully Erna, seem to belong almost to another musical era. Their grunting, stripped-bare riffs and straightforward rhythms, not to mention Erna’s unadorned blue-collar yawp, harken back to a time before, say, metal fans used words like deathcore or djent. Which is not to say that ’1000hp’ sounds musty. In fact, in this scattered and splintered musical age, it more often comes off as surprisingly fresh and vibrant.

This point is driven home by the sheer godsmackiness of the new album’s title track, a raging hard rocker that kicks off ’1000hp’ in appropriate fashion: a motorcycle engine roars, drummer Shannon Larkin whips up a shit-kicking, four-on-the-floor beat, and guitarist Tony Rombola and bassist Robbie Merrill lock in on a practically one-note groove-rock riff. Erna’s vocals tell the band’s origin story (“Time to rewind/Back to 1995”), leading to an explosive chorus that hinges on the lyric, “Turn that shit up louder!”—a phrase that will be no doubt shouted by thousands of fans each night during Godsmack’s headlining sets on this year’s Uproar Festival tour.

In tone and delivery, “1000hp” is up there with defining Godsmack tunes like “Whatever” and “Keep Away” in terms of demonstrating how the band skillfully molds gripping and anthemic hard rock out of the simplest of musical ingredients. The song’s power is matched by new album cuts like “FML,” “Locked & Loaded” and “What’s Next.”

Which is not to say that ’1000hp’ is straightforward to a fault. To the contrary, Godsmack push their boundaries on several cuts. “Nothing Comes Easy” features a recurring instrumental hook that, with its haunting guitar drones and overall evocative vibe, sounds like the work of an ’80s goth-rock act. And then there’s “Something Different,” which, true to its name, offers up a slightly more nuanced take on the traditional Godsmack sound, with a verse built on a gentle, undulating Rombola riff and a reserved Erna vocal giving way to a chorus that takes an unexpected turn from a minor to a major key. For good measure, there’s also a cello solo at the song’s mid-point.

But ’1000hp’’s best track might be its final one—the unabashed cock-rocker “Life is Good,” which rides a metalized Aerosmith-style funk-rock riff into a chorus in which Erna commands his audience to “Hold your fists up high/And turn your fingers to the sky.” It’s a fitting sentiment from a band that, over the course of almost 20 years—and despite rapidly changing trends and an ever-shifting musical landscape—continues to just do what they do, and to ridiculously successful ends. With ’1000hp,’ Godsmack offer up a few new sounds, while at the same time remaining firmly resolute in their musical mission. Now turn that shit up louder. ---Richard Bienstock, revolvermag.com

Four long years after IV, Godsmack’s last effort, fans perhaps had some reason for trepidation about the release of The Oracle. After all, since their 1998 debut, they had moved further afield of the songwriting and recording formula that made it eventually a triple platinum success. Godsmack had taken their post-grunge brand of heavy metal and brandished it into a sound that fluctuated between straight-up riff-heavy plodding and more dramatic sonic ambiences that thundered on Awake and Faceless (the former of these won a Grammy), then mutated on 2004’s The Other Side, which showcased them playing acoustically. Finally, on IV, they employed sound effects to such a degree that they used a vocoder. Each album had diminishing returns of fortune and and enthusiasm from listeners. The Oracle is, if nothing else, a return to the band’s signature sound of yore. It was produced by Dave Fortman, who has helmed sessions for Evanescence, Simple Plan, Slipknot, Mudvayne, and Otep. The album’s pre-release single, the aggressively roiling “Cryin' Like a Bitch” -- aided by its video -- pushed it to the top of the metal chart. (The controversy surrounding it, rumored to be about Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and events of the Crüe Fest 2 tour, didn’t hurt either.) “What If?” and “Love-Hate-Sex-Pain” followed it, creating greater anticipation for the final product. Listening through the album, it seems as if Godsmack heard the cry of their dedicated hoard and went back to making the kind of record that defined them. Check tracks like “Forever Shamed,” with monstrous beats -- real and sampled -- by Shannon Larkin against Tony Rombola's churning, syncopated riffs and that timekeeping bass charge by Robbie Merrill. Frontman Sully Erna's vocals are right up front, half singing, half shouting, and channeling the late Layne Staley more than he ever has before -- and that’s saying something. Interestingly, singles aside, the album picks up steam as it reaches its nadir. “Shadow of a Soul,” with its military cadences and distorted guitars and basslines, propels one of the hardest-rocking tracks here. The title cut closes the album out, and at 6:23 clocks in as its longest. It begins slowly and melodically, but begins to pick up real steam at around the one-minute mark. Basically, it's an instrumental suite with sampled vocals from a number of sources asking “What is reality?” as it moves through various stages and phases before whispering to a finish. Those fans seeking a return to Godsmack’s roots will not be disappointed; for others, the sound may be a retrenchment because there was no place else for them to go. The Other Side is Godsmack's first acoustic offering. Totaling seven songs, it's not quite a full album. But fans will note its mixture old and new material, as well as the departure from Sully Erna and co.'s normal metallurgical sonic signature. The primary influence here is Alice in Chains. New track "Running Blind" is dominated by the high-low harmony sound that's become Alice in Chains' legacy, as is "Re-Align," which otherwise doesn't drift very far from Faceless' electrified version. The guitars -- and guitar solos -- are acoustic throughout Other Side, and the percussion is lighter and more refined than the normal 'Smack pummel. As for the rest of the new material, "Voices" suggests the more subdued work of the band's peers (Seether, Staind, etc.), while "Touché" crosses threads of the Allman Brothers with the usual post-grunge throttle. It's also a little free advertising for Erna's vanity imprint and its new signing, Dropbox, whose Lee Richards and John Kosco guest. In a way, The Other Side feels like a vanity project for Godsmack itself, the sort of thing a band releases in between official studio records, or just because it can. But that doesn't mean it's a bad trip for fans, who will no doubt get a kick out of this more jangly side of a band that's made a tidy career out of going for the jugular. ---Johnny Loftus, AllMusic Review

Niemal od początku działalności, Godsmack kojarzony był ze sceną grunge’ową. Wielu widziało w nich kontynuatorów idei tamtej muzyki, szczególnie tej z okolic Alice In Chains. I jakby wychodząc im naprzeciw, zespół po trzech regularnych płytach postanowił nagrać album akustyczny. Już sam pomysł rodzi skojarzenia z zespołami z Seattle, a zawarta na The Other Side muzyka to potwierdza. Godsmack nigdy wcześniej nie był tak blisko muzyki grunge.

Muzycy w sprytny sposób postanowili uniknąć posądzeń o odcinanie kuponów i brak pomysłów na nowe utwory. The Other Side to nie tylko klasyczny repertuar Godsmack pokazany z tytułowej "innej strony", ale też zupełnie nowe kompozycje. Problemem jest tylko ogólna ilość zawartej tu muzyki: zaledwie siedem tracków o łącznej długości niecałych 30 minut. Za mało jak na pełnoprawny album, a jako taki sprzedawane jest The Other Side. Czyli już na początku mamy zgrzyt, a co jest potem?

Właściwie ciężko tej płycie cokolwiek zarzucić. Stare utwory przeszły zaskakującą, ale i niezwykle udaną metamorfozę. Kiedy zabrakło potężnego brzmienia i mocnych riffów, wyłoniły się po prostu fantastyczne, porywające melodie. Magiczny, hipnotyzujący głos Erny został jeszcze bardziej wyeksponowany, przez co jeszcze bardziej wciąga w swój specyficzny świat. Wrażenie potęgują wyraźniejsze niż kiedykolwiek harmonie wokalne, bardzo mocno kojarzące się z tymi stosowanymi przez Alice In Chains. A całość po prostu hipnotyzuje i porywa nie mniej, niż najlepsze utwory z regularnych płyt grupy. Dziwny może tylko wydawać się dobór repertuaru. Aż prosiło się, żeby w akustycznej wersji pojawiło się np. Voodoo, a jednak go zabrakło. Zespół unikał po prostu kompozycji, które już w oryginalne miały dużo akustycznych elementów, stawiając na te zupełnie nie kojarzące się z takimi klimatami. Mamy więc przebojowe Re-Align i Keep Away, prawdziwe hity ze świetnymi melodiami i porywającymi refrenami. O dziwo, nie straciły one nic ze swojej energii, chociaż ich riffy nie miażdżą już mocą i potęgą. Może tylko szkoda, że utwory te pozostały w kompletnie nie zmienionych wersjach, to znaczy zespół zagrał je po prostu identycznie jak wcześniej, zmieniając tylko instrumenty. Zarzut o brak kreatywności obala jednak przykład Asleep, spokojnej ballady, która w istocie jest przearanżowanym na potrzeby akustycznej płyty singlem Awake z albumu pod tym samym tytułem. Asleep jest zresztą jednym z ciekawszych fragmentów całości, ma coś z tego niepowtarzalnego Godsmackowego magnetyzmu. Niepozbawione go są zresztą też premierowe kompozycje, otwierające płytę Running Blind i Touche, w którym gościnnie wystąpili Lee Richards i John Kosco z zespołu Dropbox.

The Other Side to z pewnością album udany, ale pozostawia jednak pewne wątpliwości. Kolejna regularna płyta Godsmack pokazuje, że chęć podania własnej twórczości w łagodniejszej wersji nie była tylko chwilowa. Ciężko dziś orzec jednoznacznie, czy tendencja do zmiękczania pojawiła się jako następstwo akustycznego albumu, czy też The Other Side było już jej wynikiem. Jakkolwiek by nie było, płyta może być swego rodzaju smutnym symbolem rozpoczęcia nowej epoki w twórczości Godsmack. Twenty years and a staggering twenty million album sales since the release of their debut album, Godsmack return in 2018 with ‘When Legends Rise’. The multi platinum, four time Grammy award nominated hard-rockers call on Greek mythology, specifically that of the Phoenix, to inform the thinking behind their first record in four years. Just as the Phoenix absorbs new life, rising from the ashes of its predecessor, Godsmack have gone the same route since 2014’s ‘1000hp’ and fans would do well to brace themselves, for this thrill ride is a different animal altogether.

Starting strong can be a bold move if you don’t have the means to follow it up, and Godsmack start very strong indeed. Entering the ring, throwing strong hooks with the records title track “When Legends Rise”, the less than three minute opener does exactly what it’s supposed to. Leaping out of the shadows it pumps adrenaline into the unsuspecting listener with its quickening drums from Shannon Larkin, the growling bass lines of Robbie Merrill and climbing guitar riffing from Tony Rombola, before it explodes into full throttle. By the time the chorus hits, with vocalist Sully Erna exhibiting some of his most passionate deliveries to date, you find yourself surrendered to the record a mere one track deep.

While “When Legends Rise” sets the template for the majority of what follows, the result is not always to the same degree in every instance. Especially the repeated use of a musical trapdoor drop. That moment, typically between guitar solo and bombastic closing chorus, where everything essentially stops and the gap is laced with predominately isolated vocals lifted from the chorus, along with distant underlying guitars, before it all kicks back in. Leading single “Bulletproof” embodies this method perfectly, but it can be found elsewhere in different shapes and forms. The aforementioned title track as well as “Unforgettable,” which uses the harmonized gang chants of a middle school choir to shake it up a bit, are both other examples. Unfortunately, it grows old very quickly. Just as the wizard behind the curtain is only awe-striking the first couple of times, and a hilarious joke funny in the first few tellings, it soon becomes overdone, despite how fun these examples can be to listen to individually. ---Carl O'Rourke, metalwani.com

Na siódmym albumie Godsmack Sully Erna woła: kiedy opadną popioły, powstaną legendy! To wołanie zbiegło się z jednym z najlepszych krążków w dyskografii kapeli, za jaki trzeba uznać „When Legends Rise”.

Wywodząca się z amerykańskiego Massachusetts kapela szczyt popularności osiągnęła na przełomie wieków, kiedy wydała takie albumy jak „Godsmack”, „Awake” i „Faceless”, czyli krążki płynnie balansujące pomiędzy hard rockiem, heavy metalem i nowymi, popularnymi wówczas brzmieniami. O sukcesie Godsmack zadecydował wyróżniający się styl zespołu, którego tożsamość budowali charakterystyczny wokalista oraz instrumentaliści nawiązujący do post-grunge'owego klimatu. Być może kapela nie wywołuje już takiego zainteresowania jak przed laty, ale swoje przetrwanie zawdzięcza właśnie owemu charakterystycznemu, konsekwentnie pielęgnowanemu stylowi. Dlatego też to, co najlepsze dziś w Godsmack, znalazło się na krążku „When Legends Rise”.

Siódmy album studyjny zespołu brzmi przebojowo i soczyście. Zawiera kolekcję jedenastu kawałków, które opierają się na sprawdzonych hardrockowych standardach, wchodzących co rusz w heavymetalową zadziorność. Znakomicie współpracuje sekcja gitarowo-perkusyjna, a wokal Sully'ego Erny brzmi tak jakby dopiero zaczynał karierę. W tym przypadku wyświechtane powiedzenie o człowieku starzejącym się jak wino sprawdza się idealnie, bo na swoje pięćdziesiąte urodziny ten kapitalny wokalista i gitarzysta zarejestrował porządne partie wokalne, a napisane przez niego utwory – w kilku wyjątkach przy współudziale innych muzyków – powinny ożywić w świadomości słuchaczy ducha porywającego Godsmack.

„When Legends Rise” to zatem dobre, energetyczne kawałki, pełne ostrych zagrywek i znakomitych wokali. Niektóre nowe numery kapeli z powodzeniem sprawdziłyby się na stadionach („Unforgettable”, „Say My Name”, „Let It Out”), wpisując się trochę w klimat niezwykłej popularności hard rocka na przełomie lat osiemdziesiątych i dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku. Tak oto charakterystyczny wokalista i zarazem gitarzysta rytmiczny, uzdolniony i ceniony w środowisku inżynier dźwięku i producent, a także ograna od lat kapela stanowią prosty i skuteczny przepis na rockową przebojowość. Tak jest w przypadku Godsmack, bo i Sully Erna się nie starzeje i instrumentaliści grupy świetnie się trzymają, a ręka produkcyjna Erika Rona sprawia, że zespół brzmi dziś naprawdę dobrze.

Trzeba tu zauważyć, że najlepiej brzmią kompozycje, które Erna napisał z multiinstrumentalistą, kompozytorem i producentem Johnem Feldmannem, bo zarówno tytułowy „When Legends Rise”, jak i zadziorny „Every Part Of Me” zachwycają nie tylko rockową świeżością, ale i gitarowymi odjazdami. John Feldmann to człowiek, który ma swojej biografii współpracę m.in. z Black Veil Brides i Disturbed, stąd jest żywą gwarancją idących w eter numerów. Ściany rozbija też znana przed premierą krążka kompozycja „Bulletproof” – tu z kolei Sully’ego Ernę wsparł nie mniej ceniony w środowisku Erik Ron, będący zresztą, jak wcześniej wspomniałem, producentem całego albumu. On współtworzył także kompozycję „Take It To The Edge”, czyli kolejny mocny akcent w dobrym stylu formacji. Grupę współtwórców albumu, niebędących na stałym etacie w Godsmack, zamyka Clint Lowery, który dołożył coś od siebie w utworze „Just One Time”. Ponadto Erik Ron i Clint Lowery współtworzyli także wieńczący album „Eye Of The Storm” o zdecydowanie najcięższym ładunku instrumentalnym na dystansie siódmego dzieła kapeli.

Na „When Legends Rise” znalazła się także wzruszająca ballada „Under Your Scars”, gdzie poza standardowym rockowym instrumentarium o sekcję smyczkową zadbały Zvezdelina Haltakova i Irina Chirkova. Całość materiału została więc napisana w sprawdzonej konwencji: seria mocnych hard rockowych numerów i ballada, które nowemu albumowi Godsmack powinny zapewnić uznanie. Kapela brzmi młodziej, niż rzeczywisty staż na scenie – nie traci przy tym doświadczenia, ale zyskuje buntowniczy charakter. „When Legends Rise” to kawał porządnego grania, które zachwyci wszystkich fanów hard rocka. ---Konrad Sebastian Morawski, magazyngitarzysta.pl

Godsmack may never garner the kind of praise that's bestowed upon its obvious influences (Metallica, Alice in Chains, Tool), but the hard-working Boston quartet has managed to stay at the top of the alternative metal heap for nearly eight years. IV, produced by frontman Sully Erna, doesn't stray too far from the formula, relying on big midtempo brooders and heavy, drop-D riffs to work in the usual themes of loneliness, betrayal, and the overuse of the word "bleeding." For the most part it's cliché done well -- the record opens with an audio collage of children saying their prayers before bed -- and the band can turn it up to 11 with the best of them. Stadium-sized cuts like "Speak," "Enemy," and "Temptation" are sure to please the masses -- they even bring out the vocoder for "No Rest for the Wicked" -- and fans brought into the fold with 2004's acoustic Other Side EP will eat up the pensive, mandolin-led "Hallow," but there's little growth to be found, resulting in a textbook-executed slice of commercial aggression. ---James Christopher Monger, AllMusic Review

Jego wokalista, Sully Erna to artysta na tyle wszechstronny, że jeden projekt mu nie wystarcza. Od 2010 nagrywa i koncertuje pod własnym nazwiskiem. Solowo doczekał się dwóch albumów – „Avalon” z 2010 i „Hometown Life” z 2016.

7 lutego 2018 Sully skończył 50 lat. Trudno w to uwierzyć, bo wciąż jest w świetnej formie wokalnej i nadal znakomicie prezentuje się na scenie, zarówno z zespołem, jak i solo. ---antyradio.pl

With the exception of a lackluster remake of Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times," Godsmack's album of the same name is a solid compilation of their biggest songs. Considering that the face of music changed quite a bit since their debut in 1997, it's easy to forget what titans of alt rock radio they were in their heyday. Not counting the aforementioned cover song, every one of the tracks on Good Times, Bad Times cracked the Billboard Mainstream Record Charts, most notably the record-breaking, Alice in Chains influenced "Whatever," which lingered at number seven on Billboard for a stupefying 33 straight weeks. Also included are "Speak," "Straight Out of Line," and "I Stand Alone" (all number ones) alongside "Running Blind" and "Touché," from their all-acoustic EP, The Other Side. If you crave Godsmack and you prefer the hits, this one's for you. The bonus DVD includes a 75-minute performance of the band playing an acoustic set at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. ---Jason Lymangrover, AllMusic Review

The House Of Blues is an intimate setting. The show was beautifully captured and edited - and the frame rate is perfect (as some music videos move headache fast)... for the most part it's an acoustic set with the band sitting on stools and fairly reserved. Sully stops the show twice for a brief Q&A with the audience (a nice touch). The highlights of the DVD being "Running Blind", "Keep Away", "Serenity", a cover of the classic "Reefer Head Woman" with guest performers Lee Richards and John Kosco, and "Voodoo"... along with Merrill's short bass solo, and drummer Larkin's duel with Sully's bongos. Larkin proves to be an accomplished drummer and comes off like an octopus behind the kit - his long arms were all over the place... often times up and over his head while keeping a steady beat. THE NOT SO GOOD: Only two minor things really. I found a few songs missing on the music disc - the opening track to my favorite album of theirs ("self titled") "Moon Baby", "Time Bomb", and two of my favorites from "Awake" ("Sick Of Life" and "Bad Magick"). I was disappointed to see that only two studio tracks made this record from "Awake". The only other thing wrong here is you get the edited version of "Voodoo" (originally 9 minutes, you get the radio friendly 4.5 minute version here). Time is always a factor with putting a disc together, but I felt with approximately 15 minutes of unused space on this release...
