With the strength of In the Army Now still fresh in the ears, Status Quo's next album surely ranks among their most disappointing, a directionless hodgepodge that was, contrarily, explained away by the band as an attempt to do something different, and appeal to a wider fan base. Forget it! Twelve songs might have represented the band's most generous new offering since Rockin' All Over the World, and "Ain't Complaining" itself is a primo Quo rocker. But from there on in, the album simply swerves across the sonic palette and winds up with its fingers in so many pies that you could be listening to a late-'80s compilation album. Starship, Phil Collins, the theme to Miami Vice, all are granted a stylistic look-in as the album meanders on, while the maddening catchiness of "Burning Bridges" could have been the Chieftains for all it had to do with the Quo we loved. Rossi later admitted that the album's problems were due in part to record company interference, but more to his own lack of interest in the proceedings. He would not, he swore, make that mistake again. ---Dave Thompson, AllMusic Review

Even the disinterested and unfathomable will concede somewhere, no matter how begrudgingly and with fists clenched in anger, that Status Quo must be doing something right to have released 30 albums and over 70 singles. The music that in part defined an era for their fans still has the power to get a broad smile from almost anyone at some point, to nod in agreement should it come on a pub jukebox and enjoy the brief respite the simply crafted songs offer. It is up-beat and sometimes can be shockingly great stuff.

The same can be said for the latest album Bula Quo! the newly released double album by the band for their first film. The album offers a record made up of half new songs of which the same formula goes as before with a few little twists and nods to the films direction and a live set that was captured in 2010. Both C.D.s sound as they should; nothing really shocking, bad or interestingly out there enough to say Quo have really outdone themselves this time. It is just Status Quo, reliable and still enough to make you smile, especially on the new tracks GoGoGo, Never Leave A Friend Behind and Running Inside My head but it is like having unlimited candyfloss, for a while it is sweet and just the best thing on Earth but eventually all that smiling is going to wear you out, the thought of more candyfloss enough to drive you to distraction.

Bula Quo! is one for the long term fan of the Quo and those with a broader acquaintance with rock, the rhythms and reasonably catchy tunes will not appeal to all as unfortunately for the casual listener, the young budding music lover, the busy waiter in the hotel, the young mum at home will dip in and straight back out again. Status Quo do what they do and they do it well but even though they are still a tremendous live act, there is nothing new under the sun that hasn’t been heard before, legends they were, legends they remain but time eventually catches up with the very best, even Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi. ---Ian D.
Thirty years into their career, and with plenty of cover versions under their belts, Quo celebrated their anniversary by releasing an album of cover versions. The twist here is that you'll find Quo taking their unique rock approach to songs that you wouldn't expect them to cover such as Men Without Hats' "The Safety Dance," the Move's "I Can Hear the Grass Grow," Timbuk 3's "The Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades)," Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop," and more. Though not all of it is successful, there are some fine moments to be had including "When You Walk in the Room" with Francis Rossi wrapping his smooth, wounded vocals over an extraordinary version of this classic. Robert Palmer's "Johnny and Mary" sounds just as grand as the original, though Rossi's vocals are more personal than Palmer's. Buddy Holly's "Raining in My Heart" features Queen's Brian May (and rumor says that most of the track is actually May with Rossi guesting) and is touching and sweet. There are some duds, including "Lucille," "Get Back," and "Proud Mary," but overall, this is a refreshing and very listenable collection of covers by a band that tends to renew rock & roll every time they enter the studio. --- Steve "Spaz" Schnee, allmusic.com

Though Status Quo is best known for fast and undistinguished boogie rock, they were quite capable of subtlety when it suited them. Despite the name, most of the music on Piledriver is varied and subtle enough to be interesting. The power boogie is indeed there, as represented by crowd-pleasers like "Don't Waste My Time" and "Paper Plane," but so also are quieter, softer pieces with acoustic textures and progressive structures. The melancholy "A Year" is a standout track, a stark, melancholy song about carrying on after a loved one has died. The soft rock intro gradually shifts to a more powerful guitar piece in a way that is reminiscent of early Fleetwood Mac and has that band's delicate sense of dynamics. Elsewhere on Piledriver the band turns in a very credible slow blues piece and a folk-inflected duet for 12-string guitars. Still, most of the Status Quo fans wanted power rock, and the band obliged with one of their best pieces, the tempo-shifting "Big Fat Mama," which actually managed some U.S. airplay, though no actual chart position. The only major misstep is a version of "Roadhouse Blues" that only serves to remind the listener what a good vocalist Jim Morrison was. On the whole Piledriver is still an enjoyable listen, one that has aged much better than later albums by the same band or much other hard rock from this period. ---Richard Foss, allmusic.com

Although Status Quo's commercial status has never been in doubt, few long-time fans have truly rated their '80s-'90s era output alongside the bedazzling blues boogie classics that they unleashed earlier in their lifespan -- that peerless run of albums that stretched between Piledriver and Rockin' All Over the World. Too many clichés, too much fuss, too little heads-down, no-nonsense rock & roll. If you gave up on Quo any time in the past 20 years, you're not alone. But, if you return to the fold for Heavy Traffic, you won't be alone either.

Quite simply, Heavy Traffic is Quo's finest studio album since Blue for You -- bar none. Recorded with all five bandmembers simply standing together in the studio and playing -- exactly like they used to work, before producers and computers and technology came along -- it offers nothing more or less than Quo ever should have represented. Crunchy rhythms, driving tempos, a blue-collar barroom barrage that doesn't even let up for the ballads -- because there aren't any!

Neither are there any cover versions and, if a few of the band's own old ghosts do filter through, that's only to be expected; there are, after all, only so many things you can do with the trademark Quo sound. So "Creepin' Up on You" has a hint of "Roll Over Lay Down" playing around its fringes, and "All Stand Up" is a bit like "Down Down." One might also detect a distinctly Free-esque edge to "Rhythm of Life," but that's no bad thing either. Indeed, it serves only to remind us just how closely affiliated the two bands were during their early-'70s prime -- and this is the sound of Quo re-establishing their half of the balance. Beyond the realm of any expectation -- a masterpiece! ---Dave Thompson, AllMusic Review
