The quintessential Tex-Mex band of the 1960s, Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs hailed from Dallas, Texas where Domingo "Sam" Samudio was born in 1937 and raised. After chart success eluded them after recording Haunted House for the Dingo label in 1965 they landed a contract with MGM Records, home of such rock 'n' roll artists as Roy Orbison, The Animals, and Herman's Hermits.

Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs released four LPs and had many chart singles, such as their two biggest hits Wooly Bully, and Li'l Red Riding Hood. The driving organ of the infectious Wooly Bully defined the group sound for their first two albums. The Pharaohs on these two LPs consisted of Dave Martin (d. 8/2/87) on bass; Ray Stinnet, guitar; Jerry Patterson, drums; and Butch Gibson, saxophone. The third LP Li'l Red Riding Hood ushered in a change of personnel and a change in their musical direction. Travelling through New York, Sam recruited a band called the Gypsies to be the new Pharaohs. The lineup at this time consisted of Frank Carabetta, multi- instrumentalist; Tony Gerace, bass; William Martin (Billy) Bennett, drummer (d. 10/25/2000) and a guitarist named Andrew Kuha. Record company pressures to produce another formula hit single led to a period in which the group abandoned their hard rocking sound in favor of adaptations of nursery rhymes, cartoon characters, and other juvenile topics.

Personnel changes continued, and as the Sam The Sham Revue, Louis Vilardo of the original Gypsies replaced Billy Bennett on drums, and Ronnie (Spiderman) Jacobsen played bass. The group was augmented with a trio of female backup singers, Fran Curcio, Lorraine Gennaro, and Jane Anderson known as The Shamettes. The Shamettes released a couple singles on their own, one being a novelty response to Li'l Red Riding Hood, called (Hey There) Big Bad Wolf . The group In 1967 Sam released an LP as Sam The Sham, and in 1971 another blues-oriented LP under the name Sam Samudio, for which he won a Grammy award for Best Album Liner Notes. In 1982 it is Sam performing two self-penned songs in the film and on the soundtrack of The Border starring Jack Nicholson.

This disc conveniently contains the first two albums by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, all you need (and practically all there is) from these zany Texas rockers. Domingo "Sam" Samudio and his merry men scored a smash in 1965 with the garage-rock classic "Wooly Bully," from the debut album of the same name. Curiously, WOOLY BULLY and its successor LI'L RED RIDING HOOD are presented here in reverse chronological order, but who cares? This is a generous helping of good-time rock & roll, completely free of pretense. Perennial party favorites, Sam & the Pharaohs worked up a zesty mix of R&B, Tex-Mex, and humorously unhinged frat-rock, spiced with an unabashed dollop of novelty appeal. What they lacked in originality ("Sorry 'Bout That" and "Pharaoh-A-Go-Go" are essentially "Wooly Bully" with different--or no--words, and "Little Miss Muffet" is "Li'l Red Riding Hood" with a different storybook setting) they more than made up for in exuberance, winning charm, and sheer rock & roll elbow grease.

Without "Wooly Bully" to give it some wind at its back, Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' second album was a far lower seller than their debut LP. Even the one hit single it contained, "Ju Ju Hand," was itself close to a "Wooly Bully" rewrite, thus paling alongside the more famous smash. But while a little Sam the Sham goes a long way, the unimaginatively titled Their Second Album isn't bad more-of-the-same choppy, bluesy Tex-Mex rock, if pretty redundant when heard all at once. Sam gets a lot of mileage out of references to voodoo or magic of sorts throughout the LP, from "Ju Ju Hand" to "Medicine Man," "I've Got a Voo Doo Doll," "That Old Black Magic," "The Gypsy," "Witchcraft," "Love Potion #9," "Magic Man"...actually, most of the album has songs along those themes. But it's pretty benign voodoo or black magic, Sam sounding at times sort of like a jolly uncle to Dr. John, who took some of the same lyrical themes and musical influences to far swampier, scarier, and more authentic-sounding territory.

Formed in Dallas and led by a dynamic turban-wearing lead singer and organist named Domingo Samudio, Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs were a garage bar band gone huge (it has been long rumored that they could play six hours straight without repeating a tune), and by mixing blues, R&B, and Tex-Mex together with a loopy sense of humor and sly lyrics, they stomped into pop history with the iconic party anthem “Wooly Bully,” which hit the number two spot on the pop charts right in the middle of the British Invasion in 1965. Aside from that record, though, and “Li’l Red Riding Hood” a year later in 1966, the group wouldn’t have that kind of chart success again, and Samudio and his band went down into most people’s annals as a one-hit wonder. This irresistible set, which collects all of the Pharaohs’ singles and B-sides for MGM Records between 1965 and 1968, plus Samudio's 1973 comeback single for the label (he had left MGM for Atlantic in 1970, only to return for that one release), proves there was a lot more to the story. Tracks like “Ju Ju Hand” (from 1965), “(I’m in With) The Out Crowd” (also 1966), “Banned in Boston” (1967), and “Old MacDonald Had a Boogaloo Farm” (1968) all display a delightfully subversive joy in being wryly silly, and they don’t get in the way of dancing, either. Oh, and then there's the wonderful kiss-off single "I Couldn't Spell !!*@!" from 1968 -- no, Sam the Sham was far from being a one-hit wonder and the romping, stomping proof of that is collected here. ---Steve Leggett, AllMusic Review
