It was in 1959 that Cliff first recorded and performed with The Shadows. In 2009, exactly 50 years later, Cliff & The Shadows have Reunited to release a new album of re-records of their classics plus 3 brand new recordings and they also go back on the road on a massive tour.

Cliff & The Shadows dominated the British popular music scene in the late 50s and early 60s, enjoying both solo and joint success. Between them they achieved no less than 19 No.1 hits, including; "Living Doll", "It’s All In The Game", "Travellin’ Light" & "Bachelor Boy". They appeared together in the movies Summer Holiday and The Young Ones from which came million-selling hit singles and albums. From 1968 both artists pursued individual careers & throughout the 70s and 80s The Shadows toured regularly and enjoyed Top 10 successes, often competing with Cliff for the number one spot.

Cliff went on to achieve huge worldwide success as a solo artist, scoring the most Top 10 and Top 20 hits in the UK singles chart. He remains the only UK artist ever to achieve a Number 1 single in five consecutive decades! 50 years on Cliff Richard, Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch and Brian Bennett take to the stage together for the very last time on this tour. --- amazon.co.uk

Billed as Sir Cliff's 100th album (compilations and live records are added into the equation), The Fabulous Rock 'n' Roll Songbook finds Richard going back, way back, to the birth of rock & roll. Richard was there at the start, turning into the first genuine British rock & roll star to emerge in the wake of Elvis Presley, so this collection of '50s standards is a return to roots of sorts. The difference is, Richard isn't quite interested in reviving the renegade spirit of early rock & roll (nor is he bothering to dabble with the sound of the long-departed Shadows): he's in it for the memories. This is enough of a nostalgia fest that Cliff Richard dotted its 15 songs with sock-hop bop and sweet, slow paeans to puppy love. When placed next to "Poetry in Motion" and "Sealed with a Kiss," "School Days" and "Stood Up" have their adolescent themes accentuated but Sir Cliff doesn't sound teenaged, not in the slightest. He's not rebellious, he's jovial, delighted to be taking this magical history trip -- and while this may be too clean, crisp, and conventional to convince doubters, this happy party will please many fans who've stood by Cliff through the last 99 albums. The old men know what the little girls don't understand. --- Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com

The 30th anniversary of Cliff Richard's entry into the music industry was marked in 1988, and the year fittingly found him experiencing one of his most successful spells ever. "Mistletoe and Ivory" became the biggest-selling single of the year, while the follow-up, the number two hit "The Best of Me," established him as the first British artist to release 100 singles. The Private Collection 1979-1988, a compilation of a decade's worth of hits, topped the chart, and Stronger, the first new album of his fourth decade, was to spin off no less than four hit singles, including "Just Don't Have the Heart," a dynamic collaboration with producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman. The album itself represents one of the most eclectic of Richard's entire career, a fact signposted by his union with British reggae band Aswad for the wonderful "Share a Dream." The aforementioned "The Best of Me" stands as one of the loveliest ballads he'd cut in years, and if Stronger has any serious shortcomings, it's the reliance on machines, not men, for the drum sounds. Even at his weakest, Richard's records had rarely lacked for emotion, but the robotic percussion saps the soul from far too much of the music. Indeed, if the selection of songs had been any weaker, Stronger might well have collapsed altogether. Instead, the likes of "Everybody Knows," "Better Day," and "Lean on You" conspire to raise it so high that many fans regard Stronger as one of the strongest of all Richard's post-Shadows albums. ---Dave Thompson, AllMusic Review

Cliff Richard is one of the UK’s most durable pop / rock stars – gaining number one hits over five different decades. He has sold over 260 million records and has achieved 14 number ones in five consecutive decades – the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Cliff Richard rose to fame in the 1950s and cemented his position as one of the leading rock acts before the advent of the Beatles. Although the Beatles eclipsed his status, he maintained an enduring appeal for many generations.

In the mid 1960s he made a firm commitment to his Christian faith and at one time considered giving up his rock career because it was detrimental to a spiritual life. However, friends encouraged him to continue which he did, though much of his future work was softer than his initial rock phase. In the 1980s and 1990s he increasingly recorded songs with explicitly Christian themes – these often proved very successful such as Mistletoe and Wine, Saviours Day and Millennium Prayer – two of these were Christmas number ones.

Because of his Christianity his records have not always been played on some radio stations because he is considered un-cool. Cliff Richard observes that many histories of British pop music fail to mention him, despite his status and impact through five decades. Cliff Richard has said that his lifestyle choice has, in a way, been a rare counterpoint to the typical rock and roll lifestyle of sex, drugs and alcohol.

Cliff Richard has been a life long bachelor. He currently lives with John McElynn a former Roman Catholic Priest; though he has denied he is gay and his been supportive of the idea of gay marriage. He once considered marriage to tennis star Sue Barker.

Outside of music, Cliff is involved in numerous charities and foundations. He donates 10% of his income to charities, preferring charities involved in research into better medical treatment.

He has also been involved in several films, of which, The Young Ones (1961) is perhaps best known. ---biographyonline.net

TI'm Nearly Famous is the album which marked Cliff Richard's return from the commercial and, in many ways, creative void which had consumed him since the end of the 1960s. Recorded with former Shadow Brian Bennett in the production chair and boasting the most consistently excellent clutch of songs and performances Richard had mustered in over a decade, the album was previewed by the lovely "Miss You Night," opened with the neo-disco "I Can't Ask for Anything More," and peaked with "Devil Woman," a rocker which became his first ever U.S. Top Ten hit. But they were simply the best-known standouts. "It's No Use Pretending" was an anthemic ballad with more than a hint of Elton John around its execution -- quite coincidentally, it was John's Rocket label which oversaw the album's American release. From the same writing team of Michael Allison and Peter Sill, the riff sodden rocking title track, too, has ghosts of John around it -- think "Crocodile Rock" meets "Bennie & the Jets." The tide flows both ways, however. Of course the two artists sound alike, but there was a time, when John was first breaking through, when a lot of people thought he sounded like Richard. Chicken? Meet the egg. There are a couple of less than stellar moments -- "Lovers" is basic big ballad by numbers, "Junior Cowboy" is the kind of ersatz country rocker which Richard had done much better in the past. What's important, however, is that once these would have been the highlights of a new Richard album; either that, or indistinguishable from all the other ballads and country rockers on board. This time around, they were simply a lull before the next masterpiece rolled out. I'm Nearly Famous rates, alongside David Cassidy's The Higher They Climb, among the most surprising albums of the mid-1970s, a record which was made in the face of both critical hostility and public indifference, yet managed to completely redefine its creator in the eyes of both. Cassidy, of course, never followed up his renaissance. Richard, on the other hand, hasn't looked back since. ---Dave Thompson, AllMusic Review
