Ian Gillan & Tony Iommi: WhoCares is a music project by Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi and a charity release by the supergroup WhoCares they had formed with the help of other musicians, to raise money to rebuild a music school in Gyumri, Armenia after the destruction of the city in the 1988 earthquake in Armenia.

In addition to Ian Gillan (of Deep Purple) and Tony Iommi (of Black Sabbath), many artists took part in the charity music project including Jon Lord (of Deep Purple), Jason Newsted (of Metallica), Nicko McBrain (of Iron Maiden) and Mikko "Linde" Lindström (of HIM).

The album was picked by many rock critics as a "collectors item" because of the vintage classic songs it contains.

55 years on from the band’s formation, in March this year over the course of five days in a studio in Hamburg, Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan joined forces with his original band the Javelins, namely Gordon Fairminer (lead guitar), Tony Tacon (rhythm guitar), Tony Whitfield (bass) and Keith Roach (drums). Ian Gillan has been influenced by rhythm and blues, American soul and skiffle, so he must have had a great time recording these songs that he played back in the day and were an influence on him becoming a singer. Even back in his Gillan days they did a few rock ‘n’ roll classics like ‘Trouble’ and ‘New Orleans’.

The Contours’ ‘Do You Love Me’ starts the album off in style, getting those old feet tapping away. The songs on here are based on the set list Ian Gillan and the Javelins would have been performing back in 1963.

Don Airey adds some rip-roaring piano to the Jerry Lewis classic ’High School Confidential’, and Airey lets fly again on ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Music’, excellent stuff. On ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ they add a little more guitar twang to the proceedings, steering away from the Drifters version of this song.

The love of blues comes though loud and clear on Howlin’ Wolf’s ‘Smokestack Lightnin’. Considering none of the Javelins took up being a musician full time after the band split-up, they play throughout the album with a superb level of musicianship – have a listen to the intro on ‘What I’d Say’.

Songs like ‘Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)’ and ‘Little Egypt (Ying-Yang)’ benefit from adding horns and these add a swing to the proceedings. The sound is crisp and polished throughout, no modern trickery only the instruments and microphones were allowed into the recording studio.

Ian Gillan and the Javelins obviously had a great time recording these songs as it comes through on the upbeat nature of the whole album. You don’t have to be born in the 1950′s 0r 1960′s to enjoy this album, one full of great songs and wonderful performances. As one of the most instantly recognizable voices in all of rock -- in a career that has spanned four decades -- there isn't much for Deep Purple's Ian Gillan to prove. But to his credit, he's still at it, as the frontman (to this day) for Purple, as well as returning to his solo career when the mood hits, as evidenced by the release of his 2009 offering, One Eye to Morocco. And while there are indeed some rockin' moments heard throughout Morocco, it won't be confused anytime soon with the heavy metal thunder of such early-'70s Purple releases as Fireball or Machine Head. That said, Gillan is still in fine voice (in fact, it's eerie how much his voice sounds comparable to his vintage Purple days), but musically, it's more mature and varied, as evidenced by the Beatles-like album opening title track, the Dire Straits-esque "Don't Stop," or the bluesy "Girl Goes to Show." Some hard rock vets have a hard time not coming off as trying too hard as they progress in years. When Ian Gillan was recording his solo albums in the late 1970s and early '80s, Deep Purple's influence never went away. But Gillan did make an effort to try different things, and he was at his most experimental on Clear Air Turbulence. Enjoyable, if uneven, this album illustrates Gillan's willingness to take some chances. While the singer favors an aggressive hard rock groove on "Money Lender," the jazz fusion-influenced touches of "Over the Hill," "Goodhand Liza" and the title song could lead you to believe that you'd been listening to Weather Report and Return to Forever. Had Chick Corea formed an alliance with Deep Purple, perhaps it might sound something like "Over the Hill." Heavy metal and hard rock are in short supply on this album, which employs no less than five horn players and shows that Gillan didn't want to be a headbanger 100-percent of the time. ---Alex Henderson, AllMusic Review

Like Mr. Universe, Glory Road put to shame many of the albums Deep Purple recorded after Ian Gillan's departure. Play this album next to Purple's post-Gillan 1975 release Come Taste the Band, and it becomes clear just how superior some of Gillan's solo albums were. Those who like Gillan for melodic yet blistering heavy metal won't be disappointed by "Sleeping on the Job," "Unchain Your Brain," and other inspired, high-octane rockers. A few years later, Gillan would experiment with elements of jazz fusion and R&B/funk, but on Glory Road it is his love of metal and balls-to-the-wall rock that wins out. Pod koniec 1978 roku, Ian Gillan odmówił dołączenia do grupy Rainbow, w której grało dwóch innych byłych członków Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore i Roger Glover. Czas pokazał, że był to słuszny wybór. Jednak już kolejna płyta grupy Gillan, "Glory Road", doszła aż do miejsca trzeciego (czyli nawet wyżej niż ostatni album Purpli z Gillanem, "Who Do We Think We Are"). Jednak to nie sukces komercyjny jest najważniejszy. "Down to Earth", a także późniejsze albumy grupy Blackmore'a, są postrzegane jako niewłaściwy krok w stronę radiowego pop rocka. Tymczasem "Glory Road" to rasowy hard rock / heavy metal, w duchu klasycznych dokonań Deep Purple. Ponadto idealnie wpasował się w popularny wówczas nurt Nowej Fali Brytyjskiego Heavy Metalu.

Tym razem zespół nie bawi się w żadne klimatyczne introdukcje - od razu rusza czadowy "Unchain Your Brain". Utwór należy do najostrzejszych, a zarazem najbardziej chwytliwych w dorobku grupy, chociaż trochę niepotrzebnie wzbogacono go klawiszami. Równie szybko, ciężko i przebojowo jest w "Are You Sure?", ale już "Time and Again" to przykład łagodniejszego oblicza Gillan. I jeden ze słabszych fragmentów "Glory Road". Drugim słabszym jest następujący tuż po nim "No Easy Way", rozpoczęty zgrzytami gitary, ale później dość banalny. Zaraz potem otrzymujemy jednak świetny "Sleeping on the Job" (w innej wersji, niż na japońskim wydaniu "Mr. Universe"). "On the Rocks" mógłby być kolejnym rewelacyjnym utworem, gdyby nie pierwszoplanowa rola klawiszy. Blues "If You Believe Me" niestety wypada słabo. Czadowy "Running, White Face, City Boy" to taki średniak. Ale album kończy genialny "Nervous", oparty na wolnym rytmie, z rewelacyjną partią wokalną Iana i udanymi popisami Tormé'a. Ogólnie jednak album sprawia nieco słabsze wrażenie od "Mr. Universe".

Pierwsze brytyjskie wydanie zawierało drugi dysk, zatytułowany "For Gillan Fans Only". I rzeczywiście większość zamieszczonej tu muzyki nadaje się tylko dla najwierniejszych fanów zespołu - chociaż i dla nich może być zbyt ciężki do wysłuchania w całości. To głównie kawałki o żartobliwym charakterze (najjaskrawszym przykładem jest śpiewany przez Colina Townsa "Egg Timer" - przeróbka utworu "Vice Versa" Samson, zagrana w klimacie staroświeckich ballad), często poprzedzone bezsensownymi zapowiedziami. Pomiędzy nimi pojawia się kilka utworów bardziej na serio, ale i one przeważnie sprawiają wrażenie odrzutów ("Higher And Higher", nowa wersja "Abbey of Thelema" z albumu "Gillan"). Jest tu jednak jeden wyjątek, prawdziwa perła wśród tandety, a mianowicie chwytliwy "Your Mother Was Right" (który w amerykańskim wydaniu zastąpił "Sleeping on the Job"). ---pablosreviews.blogspot.com
