On October 31, 2009, Gov't Mule gave a special Halloween concert at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia. Following in the tradition of 2007's Holy Haunted House and last year's Pink Floyd spectacular, the band, once again, has something very special planned for the occasion. This third in their series of Halloween shows featured a first set, which lasted over two hours, and was comprised entirely of Rolling Stones covers.

Gov't Mule is almost single-handedly bringing back the spirit of the '60s and '70s power trios, the same kind of rock & roll magic that made Jimi Hendrix and Cream such musical icons. With this two-CD set, Gov't Mule once again breaks the rules by recording both their second release and their fourth record live in concert. But hey, that's OK for Warren Haynes, Matt Abts and Allen Woody because they are, after all, Gov't Mule. This show was recorded on New Year's Eve, 1998, at the Roxy in Atlanta, GA, and documents the band in peak form, from the power charged vocals and lead guitar of Warren Haynes, to Abts' freight train drumming and Woody's thunder driven bass. On any given night, Gov't Mule alone can rock your socks off, but on this magical evening, the band was joined by some real brothers of the road -- the Allman Brothers, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton; sideman Chuck Leavell was there, along with Parliament's Bernie Worrell, former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, Aquarium Rescue Unit's Jimmy Herring, Randall Bramblett, newly appointed Allman Brothers' bandmember, Derek Trucks and Yonrico Scott, the drummer from the Derek Trucks Band. Talk about a stage full of talent. The set kicks off with a pair of Gov't Mule originals, "Thorazine Shuffle" and "Dolhineus," before counting down the New Year clock and launching into an unexpected but amazing rendition of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Next comes a guitar rocking take on Steve Marriott's "30 Days in the Hole" followed by Paul Rogers' "Mr. Big," featuring Marc Ford on guitar, followed by the blues laced "Look Over Yonder," with some ultra fine piano work from Leavell. Haynes and the boys keep up the momentum by bringing out Worrell and Trucks, in addition to Leavell, to perform the Haynes-penned Allman Brothers favorite, "Soulshine." Disc one closes with a hard rocking "Mule," featuring Worrell again on organ, and incorporating a segment of Van Morrison's "I've Been Working." Dave Mason's "Sad and Deep as You" is given the Gov't Mule treatment to begin disc two, with Leavell's and Bramblett's sax enhancing the sound just that much more, and Herring and Worrell sit in on Haynes' "Devil Likes It Slow." Next comes yet another surprise for 1999, a dramatic reading of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," leading up to the closing all-star jam of "Afro Blue." "Live" clocks in at about two-and-one-half hours, so there's no doubt you are getting much more bang for your buck, but it's not the quantity of the music that is important here, it's the quality, and believe you me, you won't find more quality rock & roll and blues anywhere. It appears as though Gov't Mule aren't afraid to touch upon a multitude of styles -- as long as they are of the vintage variety (or more specifically, styles that thrived in the 1970s). They've hinted at their admiration for dub-reggae for a while (specifically in their concerts), but it wasn't until their 2007 release Mighty High that they fully embraced the aforementioned genre. A play on words of their 2006 studio album (High & Mighty), Mighty High contains 13 dub-reggae makeovers of Gov't Mule favorites from throughout the years, and features guest appearances by such renowned reggae artists as Michael Franti, Toots Hibbert, and Willi Williams. Also, it turns out that the recordings included here come from several sources, including studio recordings mixed in with live recordings from such old Gov't Mule stomping ground as the Beacon Theatre, Bonnaroo, and Mountain Jam. What you get is a hodgepodge of tunes that draw equally from classic rock and reggae, including such standouts as "Play with Fire" (with Michael Franti), "Rebel with a Cause" (with Willi Williams), and "Hard to Handle" (with Toots Hibbert). But there are a few moments where the rock outweighs the reggae, most noticeably the album-opening ass-kicker, "I'm a Ram." Mighty High serves as both an interesting musical detour and a momentary break from the high-volume guitar jams that have become Gov't Mule's trademark. ---Greg Prato, AllMusic Review

The leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, should be well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov't Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers' influence is apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power trio feel of Cream.

Gov't Mule debuted in 1995 with a self-titled album on Capricorn Records, followed by the stellar concert date Live at Roseland Ballroom. The studio follow-up, Dose, appeared in early 1998; another concert set, Live...with a Little Help from Our Friends, followed a year later, with the complete show later appearing as a four-disc limited-edition set. A new studio effort, Life Before Insanity, appeared in early 2000. A vital member of the band was lost, however, on August 26, 2000, when Woody was found dead in a hotel room in New York City. The band had been preparing to record their next album, and after a time, Gov't Mule finally decided to carry on with the project, this time with guest bassists ranging from Flea to Bootsy Collins. The two-volume Deep End series for ATO Records resulted. Phish bassist Mike Gordon also got involved in the project, filming the recording of the albums for a planned documentary. In mid-September 2001, the group hit the road for a six-week tour in support of Deep End, Vol. 1; Oteil Burbridge filled in as bassist for most of the dates.

The second volume of Live...with a Little Help from Our Friends appeared in 2002 and the Deepest End: Live in Concert CD and DVD in 2003. One year later saw the release of Déjà Voodoo, Gov't Mule's first studio effort since Woody's death. It featured his official replacement, bassist Andy Hess, as well as new keyboardist Danny Louis. The same lineup released High & Mighty in 2006. The two-volume Benefit Concert series followed in 2007. In 2009, Gov't Mule issued By a Thread, its first studio album in three years. Hess was replaced by bassist Jorgen Carlsson, and the album featured a guest appearance by ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. In 2010, the Evil Teen imprint issued Mulennium, a three-disc package that commemorated Gov't Mule's complete 1999 New Year's Eve concert at Atlanta's historic Roxy Theatre with the band's original lineup. Wszystko zaczęło się w 1994 roku, kiedy to Warren Haynes (gitara, wokal) oraz Allen Woody (bas), którzy od pięciu lat grali w nowym wcieleniu legendarnego Allman Brothers Band, zdecydowali się na założenie nowego projektu muzycznego. Wspólnie z Mattem Abbsem (perkusja) stworzyli Gov’t Mule.

Inspiracje zespołu to oczywiście działalność Allman Brothers Band połączona z psychodelicznym, blues-rockowym brzmieniem tria spod znaku Cream. Debiut fonografczny zespołu to album zatytułowany po prostu „Gov’t Mule” z 1995 roku. Następnie zespół wydał nagrania koncertowe pokazujące pełnię możliwości improwizacyjnych muzyków pod tytułem „Live at Roseland Ballroom”.

Studyjny powrót nastąpił w roku 1998 wraz z płytą „Dose”, na której znalazły się takie przeboje zespołu, jak „Blind Man in the Dark”, czy „Thorazine Shuffle”. Jako, że Gov’t Mule zawsze najlepiej czuli się na koncertach, następne wydawnictwo „Live... with a Little Help from Our Friends” dokumentowało kolejny udany występ grupy. Następny album to „Life Before Insanity” z początku 2000 roku.

26 sierpnia tego samego roku zespół dotknęła prawdziwa tragedia. Basista Allen Woody został znaleziony martwy w pokoju hotelowym w Nowym Jorku. Pozostała dwójka zdecydowała się jednak kontynuować działalność i następne wydawnictwo przygotować wspólnie z wieloma różnymi basistami, m.in. z Flea oraz Bootsy Collins . Tak powstał podwójny album „Deep End”. Koncetowa wersja przedsięwzięcia została udokumentowana na wydawnictwie „Deepest End: Live in Concert” w 2003 roku.

Z kolei rok później zespół nagrał pierwszą płytę z następcą Woody’ego, którym został Andy Hess. Do grupy dołączył także klawiszowiec Danny Louis. W nowym składzie zespół nagrał kolejną płytę, wydaną w 2006 roku, a zatytułowaną „High & Mighty”. --- rmf.fm

Given all the live documents Gov't Mule issued since the premature death of bassist Allen Woody, The Deepest End is easily the most satisfying. Recorded and filmed during the 2003 Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, the show features the most astonishing array of guest bassists yet, and so many other guests the date was like a festival unto itself. Among the bassists preset for a night of music that began at 10:10 p.m. and ended at 3:35 a.m. were Jack Casady, Les Claypool, Roger Glover, Will Lee, Jason Newsted, Rob Wasserman, Victor Wooten, George Porter, Jr., Conrad Lozano, and a half-dozen others. Other musicians participating in the festivities -- many of whom who had gigs in the Crescent City at the same time -- include David Hidalgo, Bernie Worrell, Fred Wesley, Karl Denson, Sonny Landreth, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns, Béla Fleck, and Ivan Neville. There are two CDs, packed to the gills with music from that evening. The mixture of covers and Gov't Mule originals is, to say the very least, captivating: from the opener "Bad Little Doggie" (given its definitive on-tape version here) and "Lay of the Sunflower" to "Goin' Down" and "John the Revelator." The sound is warm and the mix very fluid, very live. The performance is completely inspired and jaw-droppingly sophisticated despite its spontaneity. There are 20 tracks over the pair of CDs, accounting for two hours and 34 minutes total playing time, and the DVD features 20 more and lasts over three hours. There are some major differences in tracks between the CDs and DVDs, making it pretty much essential for Mule fans: covers of "Wasted Time," "Sweet Leaf," "Politician," "Voodoo Chile," and a heft dose of Mule originals. All told, this and Rush's stellar In Rio triple disc are easily the live recorded events of 2003. ---Thom Jurek, AllMusic Review

This double-CD chronicles the 11th Annual Christmas Jam, a concert benefiting Habitat for Humanity, which was held at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC, on December 22, 1999. The benefit was organized by singer/guitarist Warren Haynes, of the Allman Brothers Band and the founder of Gov't Mule, and the list of other performers reflects Haynes' background. The Derek Trucks Band, led by Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks (nephew of Allmans drummer Butch Trucks), anchors the first disc, while Gov't Mule takes up much of the second. The album opens with three songs from Edwin McCain, accompanied on two of them by Haynes. He proves to be an earnest, literate singer/songwriter, and he gives way to the Derek Trucks Band, which takes up the rest of the disc, adding Allmans guitarist Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Susan Tedeschi, and Larry McCray along the way. As might be expected, the Trucks Band's sound is heavily derived from the Allmans, especially when "Yield Not to Temptation" segues into the old favorite "Turn on Your Lovelight." That means plenty of extended blues-rock guitar solos over a churning rhythm section. When McCain returns to sing on "Don't Change Horses," he even sounds like a growling Gregg Allman. The second disc leads off with Tedeschi, sounding a lot like Bonnie Raitt on the Raitt signature song "Angel From Montgomery," and continues with a reunion of the band Cry of Love, which comes off on its two selections like a resurrection of Free. Gov't Mule then takes over with a set prominently featuring Allmans keyboardist Johnny Neel and including such guests as Little Milton to give a bluesier feel to the concluding material. By the time of the ballad "Fallen Down," even Haynes is sounding like Gregg Allman, and the result is that the concert as a whole might as well be credited to "the Allman Brothers Band: The Next Generation." But with accomplished guitarists like Haynes and Trucks, fans of Southern rock have no reason to complain. ---William Ruhlman, allmusic.com

Gov’t Mule has always been a shoo-in for critical acclaim and had an easy genre transition that made for a built-in fan base, what with it being Warren Haynes’ official side project and all. That’s certainly not to say that the band hasn’t worked hard and isn’t musically awesome in their own right, but I think even Warren would agree with me that the whole Allman Brothers association hasn’t exactly been underplayed in the band bio. Current Gov’t Mule, on the other hand, is straying farther and farther away from the twangy good ol’ southern rock so characteristic of the Allman Bros Band.

By A Thread begins with the heavy, churning “Broke Down On The Brazos,” with the fierce introduction of recent addition, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, on the record. “Steppin’ Lightly,” the second track, is a grungy, distorted track with a chorus that resolves the song with the lyrical line, “Can’t you feel me rising today?” “Monday Mourning Meltdown,” on the other hand, is all jam. The bluesy feel of the song conjures up a contagiously mellow atmosphere that gets moving with a few well-placed harmonies in the chorus. The song then breaks down into a couple of raucous and funky keys and guitar riffs. “Gordon James” acts as a ballad that is borderline country music, but Haynes instead steers the melancholy instrumentation toward wailing, woeful guitars and his own clear voice and southern sorrow. As it is, “Gordon James” is probably the most memorable track on By A Thread for its purity and rhapsodic passion.

Three years since their last studio album and Gov’t Mule is smoldering hotter and more aggressively than ever. Each of the respective musicians’ explosive capabilities is singularly unmistakable, and together they are invincible. Warren Haynes and Mule have big plans for this album’s tour, including the usual and widely popular festival circuit. See you there. --- Emily J Ramey, americanmusicchannel.com
