As much as anything, this box set charting the development of British pop from 1956 to 1964 confirms that the medium is indeed the message.

Such a stranglehold did the BBC wield on radio back then that alongside some genuinely innovative and exciting moments – from "Rock Island Line" to "Telstar", "Shakin' All Over" to "Shout" – these five discs are littered with the establishment-sanctioned, sanitised pap that the Beeb deemed appropriate for the nation's youth. It seems absurd that Fifties teens were expected to groove to housewives' favourite Frankie Vaughan, big-band holdover Ted Heath, or the novelty songs with which the airwaves were stuffed (significantly, the first rock'n'roll hit was not Tommy Steele's "Rock With The Caveman", as often assumed, but "Bloodnok's Rock'n'Roll Call" by The Goons). But creativity burst out regardless amongst the young, well represented by sparkling contributions from Lonnie Donegan, Joe Brown, Billy Fury, Tom Jones, Joe Meek and of course The Beatles, captured in the first flush of "Ain't She Sweet". The beat-boom's origins in R&B are illustrated via the likes of Joe Cocker, Cyril Davies, Georgie Fame, The Animals and Rod Stewart; but it's hard to ignore the absence of anything by Cliff Richard or the Stones. --- Andy Gill, independent.co.uk

If you are looking for a collection which includes, in the sleevenote writer's words "almost every area in British rock music's rise ... from Big Bands to the Beatles" then this may well be it.

Admittedly, not every single track on this 5 CD set of homegrown rock'n'roll will make the liver quiver, the knees freeze and the bladder splatter (Little Richard's infallible tripartite test for the real thing), but for the average listener - and especially at such a bargain price - this collection provides an excellent overview of the pre-Beatles British rock era, illuminating that time, from the mid fifties onwards, when the likes of Lionel Bart, penning ersatz rock'n'roll hits for the likes of Tommy Steele and Anthony Newley, started the ball rolling for the Fabs.

There are key hits from almost all the major figures, and the emphasis is firmly on rockin': Newley's Idle on Parade is selected, for example, rather than a ballad. Those who came to fame via the 2 I's coffee bar are well represented, of course - Wee Willie Harris's tribute to the place, Rockin' at the 2 I's is present and correct.

Given the number of public domain fifties compilations out there, it's worth noting that this is issued by a major company, Universal, and sound quality is very good. It also comes with a booklet giving a picture of the music scene of that period.

And to entice those who may have bought much of this before there are a few comparative rarities and non-hits now of historical importance including early Tom Jones (Chills and Fever), pre-Who (the High Numbers' I'm the Face), a Joe Cocker Beatles cover which never made it (and isn't all that good: I'll Cry Instead), songwriter Mort Shuman's version of Turn Me Loose and young Rod Stewart's take on Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.

Also of particular note in among the covers of American material is an authentic British rock classic, Shakin' All Over, by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, not to mention Vince Taylor's Brand New Cadillac. Even the Goons' Bloodnok's Rock'n'Roll Call is included, which suggests a degree of wit on the compiler's part (and unlike the Ying Tong Song it swings).

Among the inevitable covers, the Ted Heath Orchestra's take on the Champs' Tequila is not the equal of the original, but it is enjoyable. And in addition to a few inferior copies, you get the odd intriguing version of an American original, such as Marion Ryan's swinging take on Why Do Fools Fall in Love? Lord Rockingham's 11 were a group of jazzers sending up this new rock'n'roll fad - although such is the exhuberance of Hoots Mon! who really cares? I notice, too, that Joe Brown is well represented, which is as it should be - he held his own when the Beatles were on the bill - and in fact the only major omission that I can think of is Sir Cliff's Move It, but that is easily available elsewhere.

To sum up: in terms of price and range of music covered, a very good introduction for the non-specialist. If you are only interested in a particular genre or label, there are other compilations which will do the trick; the aim of this set, as sleevewriter Dave McAleer says, is to "include almost every area in British rock music's rise" even if that includes novelty numbers and "a few somewhat dated or carefully cloned covers" in among "outstanding original rock songs, instrumentals, teen beat/pop rock, early British R&B and Merseybeat."

Please be clear, therefore, that I am awarding the collection five stars on that basis, not because I cherish each and every track.

The name Doo-wop is given to a style of vocal-based rhythm and blues music that developed in African American communities in the 1940s and achieved mainstream popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s. It emerged from New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Newark, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and areas of greater Los Angeles including El Monte and Compton. Built upon vocal harmony, doo-wop was one of the most mainstream, pop-oriented R&B styles of the 1950s and 1960s.

As a musical genre, Doo-wop is a type of vocal group harmony with the musical qualities of many vocal parts, nonsense syllables, a simple beat, little or no instrumentation, and simple music and lyrics. It is ensemble singing with single artists appearing with a backing group. Solo billing usually implies that the individual is more prominent in the musical arrangement.

The respect the Liverpool lads paid to U.S. soul artists -- by covering tunes early in their career from the Motown, Little Richard, Isley Brothers, and Arthur Alexander catalogs and turning them into Beatles songs -- gets switched around on this immaculately researched and assembled collection. Throughout its 24 tracks, the compilers excavate deep into the archives of American soul to find rare and obscure covers of Lennon and McCartney (no Harrison) compositions. This shows the effect the Fab Four had on '60s and '70s R&B and funk artists, whose often raw approach infused rootsy American grit to the material. Names such as Donald Height (singing a wonderful "Don't Let Me Down," one of the Beatles' most soul-inflected offerings), Wee Willie Walker (a driving, Stax/Wilson Pickett-driven "Ticket to Ride"), and Black Heat (getting funky on "Drive My Car") will only be familiar to hardcore fans of obscure soul. But their versions are every bit as incisive and, well, soulful as choices from the more legendary likes of Aretha Franklin (a full-on gospel reading of "Let It Be), Otis Redding (doing his "got-a, got-a, got-a" best on "Day Tripper"), and Little Richard (returning the favor of the Beatles singing his tunes and borrowing his "wooooo" shout with a rollicking reading of "I Saw Her Standing There"). Mary Wells, who opened for the band early on, gets a little schlocky on a Vegas-styled "Please Please Me," a song she probably heard nightly as part of the Beatles repertoire, but most of these selections bring a biting R&B flavor to the songs. The compilers scoured the vaults to find R&B versions of unlikely material such as "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey (Fats Domino), "Rocky Raccoon" (the Moments), and a twist on "Why Don't We Do It in the Road" from Lowell Fulson (arguably the album's most left-field choice) that do these songs justice, placing them in a different context but maintaining the Beatles' lock on melody. That's also the case with "fifth Beatle" Billy Preston's swampy "Blackbird," which shifts the vibe from hushed folk to harpsichord/organ-enhanced gospel. Both Beatles and U.S. soul fans will find plenty of unpredictable, even revelatory surprises throughout this generous 72-minute disc. Creative, Revolver-styled cover art further elevates the package. Enlightening liner notes in a bulging 20-page booklet featuring rare photos explain why these songs were chosen (and why others were not), and set the stage for a second volume of this concept that should be every bit a delight as this one. ---Hal Horowitz, Rovi

The Twist, a dance done by swiveling the hips, became a worldwide dance craze in the early 1960s. No one is quite sure who actually started swiveling their hips in this manner; some say it might have been part of an African dance brought to the United States during the slavery era. Hank Ballard (1927-2003) was an R&B singer who was part of the group called the Midnighters. Ballard wrote and recorded the song, "The Twist," after seeing some people twisting their hips while dancing.

On August 6, 1960, Chubby Checker sang and danced his version of "The Twist" on Dick Clark's Saturday night program, The Dick Clark Show. The song quickly hit number one on the charts and the dance swept around the world.

The Twist dance was easy to do, which helped make it so popular. It was usually done with a partner, although no touching was involved. Basically, it's a simple twisting of the hips. Some describe it as if you are pretending to stamp out a fallen cigarette or drying your back with a towel.

The dance was so popular that it inspired additional new dances such as the Mashed Potato, the Swim, and the Funky Chicken.

As Christmas albums go, the more punk the better… probably. Okay, so besides Punk Goes Christmas and the Bad Religion Christmas album there are few examples, especially this year. In fact, rock Christmas records are a rare thing to come by in general, and when they do, it’s Corey Taylor or Ozzy Osbourne or The Darkness, and punk has nowhere to stay for the night. This year is different, these carol singers are different, although their Christmas songs may raise just as many eyebrows.

Still, as strange a concept as this might be, it actually starts off pretty festive. New Found Glory break out the jingle bells like a ska band would break out the trumpets and ‘Nothing For Christmas,’ though it sounds more like Yellowcard than any traditional Christmas songs, is as close as NFG have come to making a stocking filler, except, well, auditory. And it doesn’t stop there. All Time Low’s ‘Fool’s Holiday’ might just be one of the best things they’ve ever done, but perhaps that’s the mulled wine talking. Exaggeration or no, it’s utterly delightful.

It would be apt to say that this record was full of surprises if it were not a surprise in itself that the record works at all. It does, it really feels Christmas-y, and this is from a collection of artists that are usually as far removed from Christmas songs as Cliff Richard is removed from good Christmas songs.

Having mentioned them in relation to the NFG track on this record, it’s only fitting to mention the Yellowcard contribution: ‘Christmas Lights,’ which is honestly beautiful. Yellowcard have been known to pull the odd tear jerker from time to time, and perhaps it’s the holiday season sentimentality, but it looks like they’ve done it again.

This album is not what you might think it is. Sure, it’s a novelty, the title alone tells you that much, but the music is not a novelty itself, it’s genuinely lovely, and that’s not something you get from many Christmas albums, nor from the vast majority of punk records. As ridiculous as this might sound, this is really something for the artists to be proud of. --- Edward Strickson, alterthepress.com

In its purest form, Rock & Roll has three chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody. Early rock & roll drew from a variety of sources, primarily blues, R&B, and country, but also gospel, traditional pop, jazz, and folk. All of these influences combined in a simple, blues-based song structure that was fast, danceable, and catchy. The first wave of rock & rollers -- Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, Gene Vincent, the Everly Brothers, and Carl Perkins, among many others -- set the template for rock & roll that was followed over the next four decades. During each decade, a number of artists replicated the sound of the first rockers, while some expanded that definition and others completely exploded the constrictions of the genre. From the British Invasion, folk-rock, psychedelia, and through hard rock, heavy metal, glam rock, and punk, most subgenres of rock & roll initially demonstrated an allegiance to the basic structure of rock & roll. Once these permutations emerged, traditional rock & roll faded away from the pop charts, yet there were always artists that kept the flame alive. Some, like the Rolling Stones and the Faces, adhered to the basic rules of traditional rock & roll but played the music fast and loose. Others, like proto-punk rockers the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, and the Stooges, kept the basic song structure, but played it with more menace. Still others, like Dave Edmunds and Graham Parker, became rock & roll traditionalists, writing and recording music that never wavered from the sound of the late '50s and early '60s. Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily from a combination of African American blues, country, jazz, and gospel music. Though elements of rock and roll can be heard in country records of the 1930s, and in blues records from the 1920s, rock and roll did not acquire its name until the 1950s.

In the earliest rock and roll styles of the late 1940s and early 1950s, either the piano or saxophone was often the lead instrument, but these were generally replaced or supplemented by guitar in the middle to late 1950s. The beat is essentially a blues rhythm with an accentuated backbeat, the latter almost always provided by a snare drum. Classic rock and roll is usually played with one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), a string bass or (after the mid-1950s) an electric bass guitar, and a drum kit.
