Apocalyptica was a cool concept to begin with: four classical cellists playing arrangements of Metallica songs. But that was their first EP, and that was a long time ago. Now they play instrumental hard rock and bring in guest vocalists, and the returns have diminished. "End of Me" features former Bush vocalist Gavin Rossdale. Brent Smith of Shinedown shows up for "Not Strong Enough," a power ballad that sounds like a performance from a televised country music awards show. When the cellos are fed through pedals, the sound can be quite impressive, like a guitar, but five times more room-filling and powerful. And the members of Apocalyptica do use many different effects on their instruments, occasionally creating sounds not unlike those you might hear on a Sunn 0))) album. The best track on 7th Symphony is "2010," which features a guest performance by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, who drives the music ferociously, like a speeding train straight into hell. But too often, using cellos to play metal riffs (as on "Bring Them to Light," which features vocalist Joseph Duplantier of French avant-metallers Gojira) just winds up making the album sound like "A String Tribute to [Insert Metal Band Here]," and not in the cool, rethinking-the-material way that earlier Apocalyptica releases did. ---Phil Freeman, AllMusic Review

Kiedyś świat był zdecydowanie prostszy. Metal oznaczał Iron Maiden, Slayera, czy Sepulturę. Wszystko było w miarę jasne i klarowne. Należało mieć na składzie przynajmniej jednego szarpidruta, basistę, perkusistę i jakiegoś wyjca. Zestaw sprawdzał się przez lata i był popularny niczym Big Mac. Aż pojawili się panowie z Apocalyptiki i wszystkie założenia szlag trafił. "7th Symphony" zapowiadane jako równie ciężkie co "Cult" pojawiło się w końcu na półkach sklepów muzycznych. Z niekłamaną ciekawością, uzbrojona w słuchawki zasiadłam do przesłuchania. Pierwszy utwór "At the Gates of Manala" subtelnie wprowadza nas w klimat całej płyty. Welcome to the nightmare! Ta płyta zdecydowanie optymistyczna nie jest. Mrok, ciemność i wiolonczela! Nieco niespokojne dźwięki, pomrukiwania wiolonczeli, oraz całkiem zgrabne przejścia na perkusji nie dają odczuć, iż utwór trwa ponad siedem minut. Na krążku znajdziemy 10 bardzo dobrych, przemyślanych kompozycji. Z czego 4 zostały nagrane z udziałem wokalistów (sztuk trzy) i jeden pani wokalistki. Gavina Rossdale’a nie trzeba chyba nikomu przedstawiać. Wokalista i gitarzysta Bush występujący gościnnie w "End of me" może zawstydzić niejednego wokalistę. Czysty wokal, piękna barwa głosu, dopasowanie się do utworu… Kawałek ten dostał również w prezencie całkiem niezły tekst. Wszystko brzmi naprawdę dobrze i szybko wpada w ucho (trochę gorzej z wypadaniem). ---Julia Kata, magazyngitarzysta.pl

Originally four cellists, now three cellists and a drummer, Finnish quartet Apocalyptica have worked hard to become more than a mere covers band since their 1996 debut, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos. Their early material established them as astute interpreters of the thrash metal genre, finding a gold mine in the tension between their subject metal and their instruments of choice, but as their reputation grew they sought to become full-fledged members of the heavy metal community. By the time of 2007's Worlds Collide, Apocalyptica had completed the transition from chamber room instrumentals to pulsating neoclassical metal, a feat amazingly achieved without the use of conventional guitars. With drummer Mikko Sirén in tow, the three founding members play distorted cello in the style of Slayer and Metallica, alternating bass picking, distorted riffing, and clean melodic lines with or without a collaborating vocalist. The one spot on Apocalyptica's record to date has been the distinct lack of a great album to complement a catalog of musical accomplishments, but Worlds Collide is very much the antidote to that problem. Driven by the slick modern rock single "I'm Not Jesus," sung by Slipknot's Corey Taylor, the album expertly bridges the gap between accessibility and the group's more progressive instincts. Atmospheric opener "Worlds Collide" is as succinct a summary of Apocalyptica's musical style as can be, literally and sonically, contrasting sections of polite melodicism and bone-shaking thrash. The album's coup de grâce is its one piece of non-original material: "Helden" is a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" auf Deutsch, with Rammstein's Till Lindemann handling lead vocals, and the cellists' rendering of the main theme is so seamless, so perfect, that it's hard to remember just how much differently the original was handled. ---Dave Donnelly, AllMusic Review

Jak gra Apocalyptica, wie chyba każdy mniej lub bardziej zaawansowany muzycznie fan ciężkiego brzmienia. Wiadomo, że ci panowie łączą metal z grą na wiolonczelach. Wiadomo też, że nie boją się eksperymentować ze swoją muzyką. Już na poprzednim studyjnym albumie, zatytułowanym po prostu "Apocalyptica", zdecydowali się na urozmaicenie swoich utworów wokalizami. Tak stało się i tym razem. A sam dobór wokalistów jest dość zaskakujący i cokolwiek nieoczekiwany. Oto w 4 utworach występują kolejno Corey Taylor (Slipknot, StoneSour), Till Lindermann (Rammstein), Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace) oraz Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil). Na nich bynajmniej nie kończy się lista osób zaproszonych przez Finów do współpracy. Wspomnieć należy choćby o pojawieniu się w jednym utworze Dave'a Lombardo, który po raz kolejny przyjął zaproszenie zespołu. Muzycznie "Worlds Collide" to niejako kontynuacja poprzedniej płyty. Choć może tym razem ciut większy akcent położony został na typowo rockowe brzmienie. Co nie znaczy, że brakuje klasycznych wiolonczelowych akcentów. Utwory wzbogacone o wokal zostały zaaranżowane tak, by nawiązywały do twórczości wokalistów. W przypadku Coreya Taylora, "I'm not Jesus" bardziej przypomina dokonania Stone Sour niż Slipknot. Zresztą bardzo słusznie. Co do reszty nie ma większych wątpliwości. Samemu nagraniu nie można nic zarzucić, bo Apocalyptica przyzwyczaiła już swoich słuchaczy do pewnej jakości, istotnej zwłaszcza przy użyciu instrumentów smyczkowych. Generalnie płytka jest bardzo dobra i sądzę, że powinna się znaleźć na półce każdego fana ciężkiego brzmienia bez względu na wiek i kierunek zainteresowań muzycznych.
