Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess is an unheralded recording by Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment alumnus John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess is a unique entry in the Dream Theater family discography. Recorded live in Nyack, New York, the duo performed a mixed set of acoustic and electric (guitar only) compositions. Both players are world-class musicians, but Rudess in particular demonstrates his well-rounded skills, proving why he is an in-demand session player for the likes of David Bowie and Paul Winter. Petrucci too is a fine musician, but lacks the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication to serve as a strong accompanist. This limitation does not prevent the session from being enjoyable, in fact, it is Petrucci's energetic soloing that provides the most excitement. It was obvious that both players had several ideas and styles they wanted to explore, which are done so with restraint and sensitivity. The opening "Furia Taurina" finds Petrucci displaying his DiMeola-like chops on acoustic guitar and ranks as one of his best recorded moments. The most interesting track proves to be "Fife & Drum," which is both technically challenging and musically stimulating. Dream Theater, the band, became successful for several reasons, but the primary ones being that of hard work and a constant desire to push themselves. It is obvious on this recording that these two fine players relish those same values, and while some cuts work better than others, the music here can truly be labeled "progressive." ---Robert Taylor, AllMusic Review

This is John Petrucci's first solo album and I must say it was not a surprise to me when I heard this album.

It was a most typical and expected result where a bland instrumental background mixed with John Petrucci's almost bombastic guitar playing and insane licks and chops. The guitar playing in it has a great sense of rhythmn, technique and especially technically. After listening to the song, Glasgow Kiss, I was almost blown away. The incredible use of Neo-Classical shredding mixed in with a great sense of rhythmn has made this one of my favorite Guitar songs of all time. But however, after this song, a lot of the songs worry me greatly due to the fact that most songs completely lack melody. When I mean melody, I mean the brilliant Jazz measures of Liquid Tension Experiment. However, that brilliance was not heard on here and most songs was very reminiscent of Train of Thought, especially the guitar playing and fast, furious Metal assault. Nevertheless, John Petrucci's Suspended Animation serves its purpose for a while to entertain Guitar players and may also entertain certain Metal/Prog Metal fans with its absolutely, mindblowing technicality, speed and precision.

W dniu 28 czerwca 2002 roku, kilka godzin przed koncertem Dream Theater w krakowskiej Hali Wisły John Petrucci miał swoją króciutką gitarową klinikę. Wtedy to właśnie nadmienił, że będzie nagrywał solowy album, a nawet zaprezentował dwa lub trzy numery, które miały się na nim znaleźć. Jednak, jak wiadomo, John jest muzykiem bardzo zapracowanym i musiało upłynąć sporo wody w Wiśle, żeby jego album ujrzał światło dzienne.

Ale warto było czekać! John sprezentował nam bowiem osiem numerów i ponad 60 minut bardzo dopracowanej muzyki. Muzyki, która choć chwilami kojarzy się z Teatrem Marzeń czy też z Liquid Tension Experiment, to z pewnością nie jest kopiowaniem tamtych pomysłów. "Suspended Animation" to bowiem płyta zdecydowanie gitarowa - podporządkowanie pozostałych instrumentów grze Petrucciego jest bardzo daleko posunięte. Oczywiście, zarówno perkusja, jak i bas, mają swoje momenty (świetne partie basu w "Jaws Of Life"), ale nie ma wątpliwości, iż główną rolę gra tu John i jego wszędobylskie sześć strun. I rola ta odgrywana jest na poziomie, który z pewnością zasługuje na muzycznego Oskara. Wspaniałe zmieszanie metalowego "mielenia", melodyjnych solówek, zagęszczonych i przejrzystych struktur, zwolnień i prawdziwej jazdy bez trzymanki jest naprawdę powalające. Przy czym trzeba zaznaczyć, że jednak przeważa granie z pazurem, dość szybkie tempa, czad i "mięcho". Wolniejszych momentów jest mniej, ale są one umieszczone z niezwykłą precyzją, sprytem i wyczuciem - tak, aby głowa nieco odpoczęła przed dalszą partią "wygibasów". Dzięki temu na płycie nie ma szans zagościć nawet jeden, malutki ślad monotonii. Dodając do tego radość grania, która bije z każdej nuty, to czy może dziwić, że album porywa od pierwszych do ostatnich sekund? Otwierające płytę "Jaws Of Life" z miejsca wbija w fotel świetnym riffem i mocą, rozbujane "Glasgow Kiss" to prawdziwy pocisk pozytywnej energii, a rozpoczynające się od mocnego, transowego beatu "Tunnel Vision" szybko przeradza się w rasowego killera. Nieco spokojniej jest przy rewelacyjnie rozkręcającym się "Wishful Thinking", ale to tylko odrobina oddechu przed walcowatym "Damage Control", którego riff waży gdzieś na oko 24,5 tony i zostawia za sobą tylko połamane kości. Potem dynamiczne, sunące przed siebie "Curve", przepiękne "Lost Without You" i fantastyczne, blisko dwunastominutowe "Animate-Inanimate".

Jeśli ktoś zna i lubi dokonania Johna, to nie ma możliwości, żeby album mu się nie spodobał. A jak ktoś uważa sposób grania Johna za popisywanie się, to ta płyta zdecydowanie nie zmieni jest opinii. A wręcz przeciwnie, bo "Suspended Animation" to jeden, godzinny gitarowy fajerwerk. Dla mnie powalający! ---Tomasz "YtseMan" Wącławski, rockmetal.pl
