Kelendria Trene Rowland (born February 11, 1981) commonly known as Kelly Rowland, is an American recording artist, actress, dancer and model who rose to fame as one of the founding members of the American girl group Destiny's Child.

Rowland began her solo career in 2002 with the release of her debut album Simply Deep, which contained influences of alternative-R&B and rock music. It included her joint worldwide number-one single "Dilemma" with rapper Nelly, as well as subsequent singles "Stole", "Can't Nobody" and "Train on a Track." Following the group's disbandment in 2005, Rowland released her second solo effort, contemporary R&B album Ms. Kelly in 2007. Considerably less successful than its predecessor it produced the hit singles "Like This" and "Work." In 2009, Rowland scored her second number-one hit with her contribution on DJ David Guetta's single "When Love Takes Over." The song earned her a second Grammy Award as a solo artist, and resulted into their 2010 joint single "Commander," Rowland's third number-one hit on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart and first release off of her third studio album.

Kelly Rowland, właściwie Kelendria Trene Rowland (ur. 11 lutego 1981 w Atlancie) – zdobywczyni nagrody Grammy, amerykańska wokalistka R&B, twórczyni tekstów muzycznych, tancerka i okazjonalnie aktorka, która zaistniała dzięki współzałożeniu i członkostwie w słynnym girlsbandzie Destiny's Child, który sprzedał ponad 100 milionów płyt na całym świecie.

Po seriach komercyjnych sukcesów w grupie Destiny's Child i światowym sukcesie singla "Dilemma", nagranego w duecie z raperem Nelly, utworu który zdobył statuetkę Grammy, Rowland wydała swój debiutancki, solowy album, Simply Deep (2002). Krążek zyskał przychylność krytyków i publiczności sprzedając się w nakładzie 2,5 miliona egzemplarzy na całym świecie. Kolejny longplay Kelly ukazał się pięć lat po swoim poprzedniku. Ms. Kelly (2007) ujrzał światło dzienne 25 czerwca 2007 w Stanach Zjednoczonych i 3 lipca w Europie. Singlem promującym album okazał się utwór "Like This" wykonany w duecie z Eve. Kolejnymi kompozycjami wydanymi jako single były piosenki "Ghetto" z gościnnym udziałem Snoop Dogga oraz międzynarodowy "Work". Ponadto, w roku 2008 artystka wydała reedycję krążka Ms. Kelly wraz z promującym go singlem "Daylight" nagranym z Gym Class Heroes.

Kelly Rowland had moderate early success as a solo artist, but her releases seemed reactive to the climate of contemporary R&B -- like she was either struggling to find her own voice, or was stifled by the industry. Just as it seemed like she might be neglected for good, the Top 20 Hot 100 hit "Motivation" and the following Here I Am placed her at the forefront of pop-R&B. Instead of a four- or five-year wait -- the length of the gaps between her second and third albums -- Talk a Good Game followed within two years. Unsurprisingly, its makeup is quite similar to that of Rowland's previous release. It begins with a pair of suggestive/explicit tracks in "Freak," a jam co-produced by Danja and Rico Love, and the Mike Will collaboration "Kisses Down Low." After "Motivation" and the conspicuously absent "Ice," the latter verges on overkill but contains a hard-to-resist melody and light-hearted touch. The following "Gone" is a violent derailment that, like Janet Jackson's superior "Got 'til It's Gone," incorporates Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," but the album quickly stabilizes with satisfying, if mostly unexciting, material. Other than the lack of European dance-pop, the main difference between this set and Here I Am is the presence of Rowland's most revealing and powerful song. "Dirty Laundry," made with the-Dream and Carlos McKinney, is an adeptly ornamented ballad that openly details Rowland's envy of Beyoncé's solo success, as well as the pain that came from an abusive relationship. The mood then lifts with "You Changed," in which she's joined by Beyoncé and Michelle (just Michelle, no last name), but it's anticlimactic, no match for "Nuclear," the track the trio released earlier in the year. Along with the expected suggestive and/or explicit jams, significant deep cuts include like the moody and mellow "Red Wine" and the deluxe-only "Sky Walker" -- another Dream/McKinney track. ---Andy Kellman, AllMusic Review

Kiedy dwa lata temu pisałam nieprzychylną recenzję trzeciej płyty Kelly Rowland, z niepokojem patrzyłam na jej dalsze poczynania. Dziś już wiem, że niebezpodstawne wtedy obawy, okazały się tylko mrzonką. Eksperymentująca ówcześnie z niewdzięcznym dancem Kelly nie tylko z impetem powróciła do mainstreamowego R&B — stylu, w którym zdecydowanie brzmi najlepiej, ale także, jak nigdy wcześniej, otworzyła się przed nami w warstwie tekstowej.

Najlepszym dowodem na to jest oparte na gorzkim podkładzie The-Dreama, „Dirty Laundry” — odważna piosenka traktująca o trudnej relacji wokalistki z Beyoncé oraz przemocy, którą stosował wobec niej ówczesny partner. Dziw bierze, że to jedyne tak dramatyczne wyznanie na Talk a Good Game, bowiem słucha się tego nie tyle z przyjemnością, co z ogromnym zaciekawieniem i współczuciem. Odnoszę wrażenie, że szokująca spowiedź sprawiła, że publiczność zaczęła inaczej postrzegać Kelly — jako pełnoprawną artystkę, która daje upust nawet negatywnym emocjom.

Przeciwnie do pozbawionego jakiejkolwiek subtelności Here I Am, Talk a Good Game wypełnia mnóstwo niedopowiedzeń i miłosnych zagadek. Wystarczy przywołać lekko popowy singiel „Kisses Down Low”, inspirowany latami 80. sensualny numer „Red Wine” czy wreszcie otwierający album, elektryzujący „Freak”. To tylko przedsmak tego, co może dziać się w sypialni, gdy zgasną światła. Nareszcie Rowland nie odkrywa wszystkich kart za jednym zamachem. Zabawie i flirtom nie przeszkadzają nawet teksty o złamanym sercu. Kawałki takie jak „Gone”, który adaptuje refren klasyka folku „Big Yellow Taxi” Joni Mitchell, czy „You Changed”, w którym zaśpiewały koleżanki z Destiny’s Child — to kolejne przykłady wolności i spełnienia Rowland. Na uwagę zasługuje również najbardziej dynamiczny numer na albumie — „Street Life”, dzięki któremu niejeden z słuchaczy zatęskni do lat, kiedy sceną rządzili The Neptunes.

Pomimo wielu nazwisk na liście producentów, materiał zgromadzony na Talk a Good Game jest solidny i spójny. Wydaje się, że więcej pożytku przyniosła jej, niż choćby Ciarze, współpraca z The-Dreamem. Płyta ma wszystko to, czego zabrakło poprzednikowi: świeże melodie hołdujące jednocześnie klasycznemu R&B i czerpiące wszystko to, co najlepsze z obecnych trendów oraz finezyjne teksty.

Tym albumem Kelly ryzykowała niewiele więcej niż Brandy przy premierze ostatniego krążka. Wysiłek jednak się opłacił — to płyta, która udowadnia starym fanom, że nie wszystko jeszcze stracone i stanowi doskonałą prezentację Kelly dla kolejnego pokolenia słuchaczy. Rowland nagrała nie tylko jeden z najlepszych damskich krążków R&B w tym półroczu, ale na pewno najlepszy krążek w całej jej dyskografii. ---Eye Ma, soulbowl.pl
