Despite the lack of a genuine hit in almost 25 years, Chris de Burgh has been far more prolific in the 21st century than he was in the days when he could count Princess Diana as one of his biggest admirers. Recorded during a stormy June in his own Enniskerry studio, Home is his seventh studio album since the turn of the millennium, and although it's yet another case of an artist needlessly reworking his back catalog, the absence of his two signature tunes, "Lady in Red" and "Missing You," proves that this isn't the cynical cash-in you might expect. Indeed, considering that "Tender Hands," a U.K. number 43 single from 1989, is the highest-charting release to receive the acoustic treatment, it's fair to say that little will be immediately familiar to listeners outside his loyal fan base. Spanning his career from 1975 debut Far Beyond These Castle Walls ("Goodnight") up to 2002's Timing Is Everything ("Love & Time"), several of its romantic easy listening numbers are indistinguishable from the originals, particularly the piano-led "It's Such a Long Way Home" and the melancholic "Suddenly Love." However, there are at least a few subtle readjustments that just about justify the concept, from the bossa nova-tinged arrangement of the '70s piano-rock-inspired "Sailor" to the driving Roy Orbison-esque country-rock cover of "Waiting for the Hurricane," while the gloopy synth balladry of "Forevermore" and "Fatal Hesitation" are far more palatable in their new delicate stripped-back forms. There's little here that will change his inoffensively MOR public perception, but Home suggests de Burgh could do worse than stick to such intimate fare from now on. ---Jon O’Brien, Rovi

Writing and recording his new album ‘Moonfleet & Other Stories’ took Chris de Burgh on the most ambitious, challenging and evocative journey of his long and successful career.

With sales of his albums now approaching 50 million worldwide, his unique, vivid slant on musical story-telling is already clearly established, but ‘Moonfleet & Other Stories’ raises the bar to unprecedented new heights. It’s entirely appropriate to call ‘Moonfleet & Others Stories’ a tour de force, not merely since it comprises 20 original elements (including an orchestral overture), but because it’s a fully-rounded and realised musical suite based on the book from which the album takes its name.

Yet while the piece – a sequence of songs threaded together by narration – concerns itself with a musical and lyrical interpretation of the classic work (a tale of 18th Century smuggling, treasure, friendship, love and loss) by English novelist J. Meade Falkner, elsewhere on the album Chris tackles an extraordinarily diverse and wide-ranging variety of topics. Leonardo da Vinci, the disappearance of childhood innocence, a short story by Oscar Wilde, a guardian angel, a war-time tale of ‘what happened next’ and, most topically and, perhaps, most emotionally, a statement about an atrocity in Iran during 2009, Chris has turned the full, sharp focus of his imagination upon them all.

‘Moonfleet & Other Stories’ is quite literally an epic, a collection of material driven by a desire to create music and lyrics that can become what Chris himself refers to as ‘films in the mind.’ His success in achieving precisely that can already be measured by approaches to make both a film and a stage musical based around his treatment of Meade Falkner’s tale. On another level, several of the songs in the ‘Moonfleet & Other Stories’ saga stand up and connect entirely in their own right, taken out of their wider context.

I am a huge fan of Chris's music and so was greatly surprised at the mediocrity of his latest album. I don't know why it's called Footsteps 2 as it has no connection whatsoever with its predecessor, Footsteps. I absolutely adored Footsteps but Footsteps 2 is just Chris singing other peoples' songs, and quite frankly I prefer the originals.

Me thinks Chris should stick with what Chris does best, writing his own lyrics and music. In respect of these two areas, he leads the pack. --- Atheana (United Kingdom), amazon.com
