Henry Mancini was a significant writer for films who used the flavor of jazz in some of his movie scores. Mancini gathered an impressive cast of top players consisting of trumpeter Pete Candoli, trombonist Dick Nash, Ted Nash on alto and flute, Art Pepper (sticking exclusively to clarinet), baritonist Ronnie Lang, pianist Johnny Williams (doubling on harpsichord), guitarist Bob Bain, bassist Rolly Bundock, drummer Shelly Manne, Ramon Rivera on conga, and Larry Bunker on vibes and marimba. Some of the dozen selections are relatively straight-ahead, while a few (particularly "A Powdered Wig" and "Scandinavian Shuffle") are a bit corny, especially in their use of harpsichord and marimba. There are a few strong moments (particularly from Candoli and Pepper) on such numbers as "Moanin'," "Sidewalks of Cuba," "Castle Rock," and "Everybody Blow," but the end results are not too essential. Overall, this is a compromise between creative jazz and tightly controlled music meant for a larger audience. A historical curiosity. ---Scott Yanow, AllMusic Review

Greatest Christmas Songs is essentially a reworked version of Henry Mancini's 1966 album Merry Mancini Christmas. All the songs from that original release are here, plus four extra tracks: "Snowfall," "Baby It's Cold Outside," "White Christmas," and a New Year's-themed medley. It's a welcome return to the Mancini catalog, especially considering that Merry Mancini Christmas was the only holiday record ever done by the master of American orchestral pop. ---Steve Huey, AllMusic Review

This import collects most of the material Mancini wrote for the late-'50s, noir-ish TV drama Peter Gunn (RCA has two separate volumes out that cover all 32 tracks). The innovative and appropriate jazz soundtrack includes arrangements by Pete Candoli, Maxwell Davis, and Bob Florence and features some of the best Los Angeles session players of the time (Bud Shank, Russ Freeman, Red Mitchell, etc.). Mancini takes up from his earlier soundtrack for Orson Welles' Touch of Evil with brass-heavy, crime jazz tunes like "Fallout!" and rock & roll swing numbers like Spook!" and the title-track. The bulk of the material, though, is in a cool, West Coast jazz vein, including brisk swingers like "Blue Steel" and breezy and mid-tempo cuts like "Goofin' at the Coffee House." Also included are the kind of sleepy-eyed lounge cuts Mancini excelled at, like "Dreamsville," "A Quiet Gass," and "Soft Sounds." This is an excellent collection and one that ranks with Mancini's other fine film and TV work from the '50s and '60s. ---Stephen Cook, AllMusic Review

Mancini's scores are memorable and unique. The Pink Panther Theme is a perfect example of one most of us who are a bit older remember very well. This CD is obviously a selection of tracks from the days when tape recording was at it's peak. That was way before digital recording. These tracks surprisingly don't suffer from that fact. I am a graduate electrical engineer with 43 years experience in analog and digital circuit design. Over the past few years I've studied the field of audio amplifiers. Contrary to another review I just read here, I think the sound quality is excellent. The music has presence played over my stereo system. I found the CD most enjoyable. Perhaps more Mancini is in my future. I don't claim to have the "golden ear", just some listening experience. I recommend this one highly. ---Ronald W. Anderson, amazon.com
