Wydany przed rokiem (tzn. 2007)debiut Witchking z tekstami na kanwie Władcy Pierścieni uważam za objawienie najnowszego polskiego heavy metalu. Chwała grupie za to, że kolejną dawkę drapieżnych dźwięków udało się jej stworzyć tak szybko. A ściślej biorąc: na Hand Of Justice Witchking jeszcze zaostrzył szpony.

Hand Of Justice zawiera więcej niż Witchking thrashowych motywów, jest szybciej, mocniej. Powstał album nieco odmienny, a równie dobry. Trzeba zaznaczyć, że nowy perkusista grupy, Banan, ma w tym spory udział. Perkusja znakomicie wspiera szybkostrzelne gitarowe riffy tytułowego numeru. Do najbardziej kąśliwych fragmentów trzeba zaliczyć także The Third One i Planet Is Burning. Z kolei bardziej podniosłe, pełne wybrzmiewających dźwięków i ciężkich riffów są Choice Of Masters czy M Impact, choć w nich również nie brakuje iście thrashowych momentów. Warto wsłuchać się w techniczne – acz melodyjne – solówki, grane niekiedy na przemian przez obu gitarzystów (Mental Trap, Metal Grail). Rozbudowane partie wokalne Toma The Storma, już bardzo udane na albumie Witchking, na Hand Of Justice nabrały jeszcze większego rozmachu. Tom samodzielnie sprostał bogatym aranżacjom wokalnym (Greed & Fear). Uwagę zwraca także coraz mocniejsze, świdrujące uszy wibrato, kojarzące się nie tylko z Judas Priest, ale choćby z Exciter... Co jeszcze? Tak jak na pierwszej płycie gęsto pojawiają się akustyczne wstępy, wtrącenia, choćby w Greed & Fear, The Third One czy Doomsday. Wolniejsze fragmenty ładnie równoważą szybsze, płyta ma odpowiednią dramaturgię. Trzymam kciuki za kolejny album. ---Łukasz Wewiór, terazrock.pl

Every now and then you stumble across something that just blows away everything else you have been listening too. Well that is the case with Witchking’s second album Hand of Justice. Out on Insanity Records from Poland, where Witchking reside as well. The thing that makes this album so damn good is its straight ahead pure Heavy Metal approach. Think classic Metal Church, Annihilator or Vicious Rumors and that’s a little of what you can expect. The guitar work is top notch from Hardo & Gajdek, from heavy chunky riffs to ear piercing solos. The very impressive vocals of Tom “The Storm” is the big thing for me on Hand Of Justice. Very good mid range and can hit them high notes with ease. Reminds me of Midnight from Crimson Glory in parts. But not as high. All this would not be at all possible if it was not for the engine room of Sado (Bass) & Banan (Drums) that keep the machine galloping along at a nice speed. Neck breaking at times, especially on M Impact WOOHOOO!!!!!!

I can’t recommend Hand of Justice enough; there are 10 tracks of pure energy with no filler. No one track stands out because they are all so bloody good. The album artwork is even old school. “Love It” This is how I use to feel 20 years ago when I would race into my room and put on the latest record I just brought not knowing what to expect J If you are after some traditional pure Heavy Metal but with today’s technology production and a fresh sound. Z muzyką zespołu Witchking zapoznałem się poprzez nasze forum. Ktoś założył temat o kapeli, podał adres strony, a tam był magiczny dział "Download". Były tam 3 utwory i pamiętam, że dwa z nich od razu przypadły mi do gustu. Od tamtej pory pilnie nasłuchiwałem wieści z obozu Witchking. Długo trwało zanim w moich rękach pojawiła się ta płyta. Zespół nie mógł znaleźć wydawcy i dopiero francuska Aurial Offerings Records stanęła na wysokości zadania.

Od strony wizualnej to wydawnictwo prezentuje się wyśmienicie. Pięknie wydany booklet i bardzo udana okładka. Brawo! Na okładce złowieszcza postać trzymająca złoty krążek. No tak... to jest Jedyny Pierścień znany już chyba wszystkim. Obrazek nie jest przypadkowy, bo warstwa liryczna "Witchking" opowiada o historiach znanych miłośnikom J.R.R. Tolkiena. Mamy tutaj do czynienia z koncept albumem. Historia zaczyna się w momencie wykucia Jedynego ("Forging the Legend"), a koniec opowieści mamy w utworze "The Will of the Ring". Coś mi się wydaje, że Mistrz nie byłby zadowolony z takiego zakończenia. O co chodzi? Tego nie zdradzę, jedynie podpowiem, że postać na okładce nie jest przypadkowa. No dobra... to nie jest Gollum, a tym bardziej Frodo (a takie domysły spotkałem).

Chwila, chwila... już widzę te skwaszone miny u niektórych czytelników. Mogła pojawić się myśl: "Bleee... znowu koncept album oparty na Tolkienie. Pewno jakieś smęty i dłużyzny. A na dokładkę wysokie zaśpiewy i słodkości, no bo przecież Elfy, Hobbici i czarodziej Gandalf na białym koniu...".

Tym sposobem dochodzimy do sedna sprawy. Muzyka! Powiem krótko - ta jest wyborna. Jest trochę epicko, jest trochę melodyjnie, są fragmenty robiące klimat. Jest heavy, czasem power metalowo, a momentami wręcz thrashowo ("Flame of Udun"!). Całość jest bardzo złożona, warstwowa i dosyć rozbudowana. Nie jest to płyta, która po 2-3 przesłuchaniach pozostaje w głowie. Nie sposób ją poznać gdy leci sobie gdzieś w tle, a my zajmujemy się czymś innym. Wymaga uwagi i koncentracji. Po kilkunastu przesłuchaniach wciąż potrafi zaskoczyć czymś nowym. Dużo dzieje się też w tle. A to jakieś dodatkowe dźwięki, a to zaskoczy nas jakaś zagrywka, czy też klawiszowa plama. Mamy też zwolnienia, czy częste zmiany rytmów. Utwory zdecydowanie nie są schematyczne i monotonne. Naprawdę bardzo przyjemnie słucha się tego albumu. Nie brakuje tutaj ciętych riffów, czy też chwytliwych zagrywek gitarzystów. Należy pochwalić Gajdka i Hadro za świetne solówki. Naprawdę są wyborne. Dziadek na bębnach gra w sposób bardzo urozmaicony. Sporo przejść i łamańców. Bardzo fajnie też chodzi bas. Bardzo często wypływa na wierzch, no i ogólnie często go słychać. Tak jak lubię.

Oj coś za dużo słodzenia wyszło, ale naprawdę jest za co wystawić laurkę. Teraz troszkę o minusach, czyli ponarzekam sobie. Mam pewne zastrzeżenia co do brzmienia. Przydałoby się wyciągnąć bardziej gitary i nadać perkusji taki bardziej tłusty dźwięk. Teraz to brzmi troszkę "za sucho". Biorąc jednak pod uwagę, że to debiutancki krążek, to specjalnie nie ma na co narzekać. Pewno na kolejnych będzie bardziej syto.

Na koniec jeszcze kilka słów o stronie wokalnej. Tom the Storm ma bardzo interesującą barwę głosu, a za razem dosyć trudną w odbiorze. Świetne Halfordowe falsety, a mocne doły coś a'la Ripper Owens. Idealny zestaw do tak rozbudowanej muzyki. Ja po 3-4 przesłuchaniach już nie miałem problemu z tym śpiewem. Tym sposobem wszystkie elementy układanki "Witchking" trafiły na swoje miejsce i wyłonił się obraz całości. Bardzo udanej całości. No dobra... koniec tego starczego ględzenia... Czas na kilka słów podsumowania.

Jak widać można o Tolkienie i nie przynudzać. Jak ktoś chce (no i potrafi) to można wyjść poza banał i nagrać coś oryginalnego. Płyta zdecydowanie do polecenia. Myślę, że dla fanów klasycznego grania pozycja wręcz obowiązkowa. Dla lubiących mocniejsze dźwięki płyta do posłuchania. Kto wie może zaskoczy? No a jak ktoś szuka w muzyce diabła, siary i szatana... to i tak dawno już opuścił tą stronę. Dla mnie to jest bardzo dobry, ciekawy i intrygujący materiał. Płyta która wciąga i nie pozwala na nudę. I haven't the faintest clue how this made its way to my hard drive. This morning I found myself running dangerously low on disk space once again and so decided to listen to a few albums to see which are worth keeping. I came across this not knowing who the hell they were and how I'd gotten this, which is weird because my RYM profile says I got this just over a week ago. I did some minor looking up to find out they're a new "epic heavy metal" band from Poland and this is their debut. Great! I love bands like Kamelot and Falkenbach so I was hoping for the best. So I started this mother up.

The first song, Awakened, sounded very promising with a nice little acoustic intro leading into a huge electric riff. The first minute really is fantastically epic... then the singer comes in.

MAN this guy is awful. Think of all the cheesy power metal bands you know with singers that sing in English with their funny native accents very present (Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Children of Bodom). He's like those guys but without any trace of Hammerfall's cutesiness, Sonata Arctica's passion, or Children of Bodom's YAOW (but then again, nobody else has the YAOW so let's forget about that). This guy sounds silly and sings with a very simple and slow vibrato. Every time I hear this asshole pipe out some long cringe-worthy OHHHHHHHHHHH, that's a little bit less I care about what could've been potent epic musicianship because they're obvious fools for letting this Fabio Lione wannabe anywhere near a microphone. This all gets particularly worse on Flame of Udun where he tries so very hard to squeeze out a Ripper Owens-like falsetto as soon as he opens his mouth. Remember that pretty sweet Iced Earth song from The Glorious Burden "The Reckoning/Don't Tread On Me" and how he has these wicked high notes towards the end of the interlude? Yeah, that was very awesome. Witchking guy tries to do that except it's an epic failure in every way conceivable. I somehow found the courage to go on after that atrocity, and I was only five songs in! I still had another ten to go!

Once you let the awful singing sink in and you get slightly used to it, you can look past it and find what else is really bad. Next thing I'd like to point out is how the whole thing makes me think and feel. To hear this fairy yell out some words about battles and Tolkien isn't very interesting or cool at all. I know it's metal as fuck to sing about such things, but it's completely useless and without any originality as their whole theme has been approached many years ago many times more with much better results (such as Blind Guardian's Nightfall In Middle Earth).

Another thing I don't get is how most of these songs really do have great intros that sink into shit faster than a rock into water. How can a band manage to do that? If you have it in you to start a song off in such a way that keeps the listener interested for at least another minute, they should be able to stay consistent with that and make a few simple three-chord riffs AT LEAST. Instead we're reeled in to get completely distraught by their singer. Perhaps they're just musically sadistic.

This really is just a band of nobodies that sound like they treat the lyrics of Manowar as some kind of heavy metal doctrine. Nobody needs another medieval themed metal band. I'm sure royalty, battles, fire, and various outdated weaponry are very cool things but I've heard enough about them, thank you very much. This album is devoid of any aesthetics, conventional or unconventional, apart from maybe just epic for the sake of being epic (And the Bearer Goes is a somewhat decent song, the only one mind you). There certainly aren't any memorable riffs, there's no snazzy wall-of-sound production, the musicianship is pretty standard, and the songs mostly sound the same. What on earth am I supposed to be getting out of this?

Anyway, thank you Witchking for taking an hour of my time aside to show me why modern day heavy metal bands with your sort of themes just never work. This epic album is an epic failure that nobody needs.
