Basia never had too many hits, racking up only three charting singles on the Top 100 ("Time and Tide," "New Day for You," "Cruising for Bruising"), but Clear Horizon: The Best of Basia remains an engaging listen nevertheless, because it balances those hits with strong album tracks and forgotten singles. Unlike many artists with a handful of hits, Basia made fully realized albums, but since none of them were drastically dissimilar in style, this compilation works very well. Not only is it the ideal choice for the curious and casual fan, it is truly entertaining for the hardcore fan, since it rounds up all the best cuts on one disc.

Polish vocalist Basia Trzetrzelewska spent several years in the pop band Matt Bianco, an offshoot of Blue Rondo à la Turk, before launching a solo career in 1987. With the musical assistance of Matt Bianco's Danny White, she developed a subtle cocktail jazz-pop first showcased on her 1987 debut album, Time and Tide. Supported by the singles "New Day for You" and "Time and Tide," the record became a hit in Europe and America, where the album went platinum. Basia's second record, 1990's London Warsaw New York, was just as successful, but her third effort, 1994's Sweetest Illusion, failed to find an audience. Clear Horizon: The Best of Basia followed in 1998 and proved to be her only release for several years, as the deaths of her mother and several close friends temporarily sapped Basia's drive to make music. Urged by her former bandmates Danny White and Mark Reilly to join the reunited Matt Bianco, however, she eventually returned to music in 2004 and issued Matt's Mood with the band. Basia then returned her focus to her solo career, releasing It's That Girl Again with White's help in early 2009. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

It's been 15 years since Basia Trzetrzelewska and her partner and collaborator Danny White issued the criminally under-heralded The Sweetest Illusion, her final album for Epic. Since that time, she's popped up on a few instrumental mix albums and as a guest vocalist on Matt Bianco's Matt's Mood, but other than compilations, this wonderfully inventive singer and songwriter of adult contemporary music disappeared from the scene. It's That Girl Again showcases the Polish songstress in a variety of settings over 13 new tracks. A host of crack session players join her core band, including White -- her co-writer on most tunes -- Mark Reilly, guitarist Peter White, and a chorus made up of Basia's family and friends. The set opens with "If Not Now Then When," a clever reintroduction to Basia's sound with a slew of new ideas including the use of bossa nova rhythms. Guitars and acoustic keyboards permeate the mix rather than some of the more synthetic '80s and '90s sounds of her earlier records. The lyrics are the same, positive, emotive tomes about honesty, fulfillment, intimacy, and determination she has always employed. "A Gift" is a surprisingly candid tune, about taking another's love for granted and becoming aware of the error before it's too late. The languid acoustic and electric guitars, the gently skittering loops and hand percussion all flavor a lyric of uncommon candor. "Everybody's on the Move" is true, big dancefloor modern funk that is ripe for dozens of remixes. In essence, while on some level hers is a sound close to the one that garnered her platinum album sales in decades past, there is plenty that is new here, including much more sophisticated rhythms, a more adventurous use of Latin, jazz, and Brazilian (particularly the latter) styles as they meld seamlessly with her brand of Eastern European pop, and a more poetic and focused way of writing lyrics, all wrapped up in that gorgeous voice of hers and in White's arrangements. This is as welcome a comeback record as any we've heard in recent years. In fact, It's That Girl Again goes so far as to make us remember just how much we missed her in the first place. –Thom Jurek, Rovi

London Warsaw New York is the second studio album by Polish jazz and pop singer–songwriter Basia, released in the United States on October 23, 1989 by Epic Records. The album's title comes from a line in the song "Copernicus" (included on the album): "Our love will take this globe by storm/If it's London, Warsaw, or New York". Basia performed this song live on Late Night with David Letterman on Thanksgiving night on November 22, 1990.

The album earned a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America on August 11, 1992 for sales of over one million copies in the United States. It produced five singles: "Baby You're Mine", "Cruising for Bruising", "Brave New Hope", a cover version of "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", and "Copernicus". "Cruising for Bruising" peaked at number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Basia's second U.S. Top 40 hit and third (and last to date) entry on the Hot 100. Three singles entered the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, including "Cruising for Bruising" (which reached number five, tying with "New Day for You" from Basia's previous album, Time and Tide, as her most successful entry on that chart); "Until You Come Back to Me" and "Baby You're Mine" also charted AC though they failed to make the Hot 100. The video for "Until You Come Back to Me" contains footage shot in Seattle, with scenes including the ever debated Alaskan Way Viaduct and the landmark Paramount Theatre.

Drugi album Basi, to muzyka niezwykle dojrzała, spójna konceptualnie, okraszona bogatymi brzmieniowo aranżacjami. Wystarczy posłuchać kołyszących, "Ordinary People" czy też "Baby You`re Mine". "London Warsaw New York" to wybitna płyta, wyrafinowana, elegancka muzyka. --- merlin.pl

The sweet voiced Polish girl continues to set the standard by which other, less inventive adult contemporary vocalists should be measured. Her tender yet powerful feelings take listeners' hearts to places with fascinating, sometimes surreal imagery. Basia and partner/producer Danny White's real gift is rhythmic diversity, and the tandem take the artsy route on a big, brassy tour through Brazil and Latin America, employing jazzy touches that keep even the most staid tune hopping. The ballads are sweet as well. Nobody in this crowded genre outclassed or outperformed Basia, but as welcome as this comeback after four years was, the singer never followed up with another full-length studio project. --- Jonathan Widran, AllMusic Review

Czy Butterflies ma szansę powtórzyć komercyjny sukces swoich poprzedniczek: Time And Tide, London Warsaw New York, The Sweetest Illusion, It’s That Girl Again?

Basia Trzetrzelewska.

To ciągle ta sama Basia.

No Heartache niepokojąco kołysze, stanowi zachętę do tańca.

W Butterfly Basia śpiewa zwiewnie i delikatnie, dziewczęcym głosem, szepcze. Utwór ten kojarzy mi się z wiosną, odradzającą się przyrodą, słoneczną aurą. Kolejna entuzjastyczna piosenka Where’s Your Pride przynosi nawoływanie, by nie oglądać się za siebie, nie żyć przeszłością, by być dumnym z siebie. Żyjmy chwilą, bądźmy sobą! Przyjmujmy z pokorą to, co daje nam los!

Energetyczna piosenka Be.Pop jest muzycznym credo Trzetrzelewskiej i jej współpracowników. Show Time ma ciekawy groove. Basi towarzyszy Mark Reilly z Matt Bianco. Stylowy, romantyczny popowy song. Finalna pieśń – zaskakująca Pandora’s Box – zawiera elementy retro. Przemycone zostają tu też współczesne brzmienia. Kolejna udana samba w dorobku Basi. Let’s dance!

Polish singer and songwriter Basia became prominent during the 1980s, first for her membership in the polished British pop-jazz vocal outfit Matt Bianco, and later as a solo artist. Her first three wildly successful recordings -- which sold by the truckload in the U.S. and U.K. -- made her something of a household name during the MTV era. Her Brazilian-influenced jazzy soul helped to create a standard of excellence in adult contemporary on par with peers Everything But the Girl, Swing Out Sister, Level 42, and Sade. She all but disappeared after the '90s, but did take part in a reunion with her former band for 2004's acclaimed Matt's Mood. In 2009, she returned to solo recording with It's That Girl Again. The album resonated with longtime fans, but failed to rival the large sales of her earlier outings, perhaps due to a transitioning industry landscape. But everything in pop is cyclical. With Butterflies, her first studio recording since 2009 and debut for Shanachie, she attempts to reclaim her place with her trademark meld of classy, sophisticated Latin- and Brazilian jazz-tinged pop.

Co-written and co-produced with longtime collaborator and pianist (and Matt Bianco bandmate) Danny White, this set includes 11 originals that underscore her trademark sound and crisscross the genre landscape. In addition, her instantly recognizable voice and three-and-a-half octave range, attention to detail, craft, and a newfound freedom are the hallmarks of Butterflies. First single "Mateo" is at once crisp and vulnerable in its use of samba; its clean emotive lines and hip syncopation would not be out of step in a collaboration between Marisa Monte and Michael Franks. In "No Heartache," lithe, layered vocal harmonies (reminiscent of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66) meet breezy Latin funk -- complete with wah-wah guitars and punchy clavinets. "Be Pop" is framed in hard-hitting uptempo swing buoyed by the Chopin University Big Band with swaggering saxophones and muted brass. "Show Time" juxtaposes a steamy guajira groove with lush romantic pop as former Matt Bianco bandmate Mark Reilly duets with Basia in a mini reunion. "Like Crazy" is a breathy, classy, Euro soul tune with Brazilian rhythmic accents and an irresistible hook. Basia's vocal drips with conviction as her protagonist confesses want in the midnight hour amid rippling piano, taut bass, and synths. Retro-futurist samba fuels closer "Pandora's Box" has slippery scatting, cascading strings, silvery muted brass, nylon-string guitars, and bubbling percussion. Basia gradually ratchets up the sensual tension as White delivers call-and-response ostinatos that guide saxophones, flutes, and even a bassoon. While it's easy to peg Butterflies as simply a continuation of Basia's aesthetic in a new century, that would be missing the point: That this winning formula has evolved from the past to emerge in the present as musically and emotionally resonant via wonderfully articulated songs illustrated with gorgeous charts and underscored by truly inspired performances. ---Thom Jurek, AllMusic Review

Polish-born vocalist Basia Trzetrzelewska has achieved considerable success since emerging in 1987 with the platinum selling album Time and Tide. Basia recorded two more successful albums of light jazz-pop (London Warsaw New York, The Sweetest Illusion) before releasing the live album Basia on Broadway in 1995. Recorded over two nights at the Neil Simon Theatre in November, 1994, Basia on Broadway is not only a wildly entertaining record of the artist's energetic live presence, but also a solid overview of her best-known work. Basia, much like Sade and Swing Out Sister, specializes in an engaging mix of jazz and pop. Before embarking on a solo career, Basia had a brief stint in the band Matt Bianco with musician Danny White. White has been Basia's "silent partner" ever since, co-writing and producing her material as well as playing keyboards. The two receive fine support on this album by jazz guitarist Peter White (Danny's brother), drummer Richard Bailey and Chris De Margary, who contributes stellar saxophone work to "From Now On." Basia herself is in fine voice throughout, on both the up-tempo material (the hit "Cruising for Bruising" and the Latin-tinged "Third Time Lucky" are especially good) and ballads such as "Time And Tide" and "Yearning." Fans of Basia's first three studio albums won't be disappointed, but may find Basia on Broadway redundant. The live renditions are quite faithful to the studio versions, and the album only contains one new track ("Dzien Sie Budzi," sung in Polish.) However, one song from Basia's Matt Bianco days, "Half a Minute," is also included. Despite the lack of new material, Basia on Broadway is a must for Basia fans, and is a nice introduction of her work to the casual listener. ---William Cooper, AMG.

Since her early days with UK group Matt Bianco, Basia has forged her own path in music. Born in Poland, she integrates her homeland with Brazilian jazz and a touch of pop to create her own unique mixture. In 1986, she started her solo career with Time and Tide, co-produced by her longtime collaborator (and Matt Bianco alum) Danny White. Their partnership resulted in several hit albums, but Basia mysteriously disappeared from the music scene after her last studio album, 1994's The Sweetest Illusion. Slowly she has resurfaced, first with her Matt Bianco reunion, 2004's Matt's Mood. Next came 2009's solo effort It's That Girl Again, proving that her voice had lost none of luster and that she still possessed a gift for interpreting Brazilian rhythms for a new generation. Subsequently she has returned to touring, and judging by her newest live album From Newport to London: Greatest Hits Live...And More, Basia exudes the same charisma and multicultural appeal that first enchanted fans in the 1980s.

Recorded on June 29, 2011 at the Wytwórnia cultural center in Poland, the Basiaalbum displays Basia in fine voice as she guides the audience through her past hits as well as newer songs. Beginning with "Third Time Lucky," the chanteuse deftly navigates the complicated Latin rhythms exactly as she did in 1994. While her voice remains mostly unchanged, she slightly changes the key for "Drunk on Love," but without detracting from the original recording. "Astrud," Basia's ode to her idol, Brazilian jazz legend Astrud Gilberto, serves as a loving tribute with its sultry rhythms and fond lyrics. "Where is she now the lovely girl/ With the softest voice you've ever heard/ Asking 'Fly Me to the Moon,'" she croons, a gentle classical guitar solo accenting the song's lovely chord changes. The band immediately segues into "New Day for You," its Latin feel perfectly accompanying the former song. The live instruments, including horns, nicely accent Basia and White's abilities to merge jazz and pop into a winning combination. The new addition of a lilting flute solo adds depth to the song.

White deserves great credit for rearranging old chestnuts like "Cruising for Bruising" to breathe new life into them. Extended piano and saxophone solos, slight changes in percussion, and different harmonies subtly deepen the tunes, encouraging the audience to listen to the well-known tracks with fresh ears. For example, the Time and Tide track "How Dare You" sounds even better here than on the album, as White emphasizes the tune's jazz elements. Unlike the synthesizer-heavy studio version, the live horns, keyboards, and drums add punch, with Basia's strident voice growling playfully. --- blogcritics.org

Album zawiera 15 koncertowych wykonań największych hitów Basi (m.in. Third Time Lucky, Cruising for Bruising, A Gift) , dwa zupełnie nowe studyjne utwory oraz piosenkę „There’s a Tear” w nowej, akustycznej aranżacji.

Po wydaniu poprzedniego albumu “It’s That Girl Again” w kwietniu 2009 roku Basia i Danny wraz z zespołem wyruszyli w trasę koncertową po Stanach Zjednoczonych i Europie.

--- infomusic.pl

Japan-only release, somewhat of the counterpart to Brave New Hope.

Basia is emerging with her strongest work yet, It’s That Girl Again, an album that brings her trademark global pop/jazz sound into today. From the first track “If Not Now Then When” —the bouncing melody, soaring horns, and the feeling that you’ve landed in a small fiesta—it’s as though she has never been away. Basia and her collaborator Danny White have always drawn from timeless influences: the rhythms and styles of Latin music, the sound of classic American soul and R&B, and the polish of ’50s and ’60s jazz; yet the sound is undeniably fresh. There is nothing about this album that is stuck in the past, rather it presses forward, building upon their many accomplishments during the course of their career.

Poland-native Basia Trzetrzelewska was introduced as a vocalist with the group Matt Bianco and hits “Get Out of Your Lazy Bed,” “More Than I Can Bear” and “Half A Minute.” She and the group’s main composer, keyboardist Danny White, departed to begin work on their debut, Time and Tide. The album was successful throughout Europe and Japan, but it took some adventurous D.J.s to import the album to a new radio audience stateside. The buzz led to Time and Tide’s official US release and three Adult Contemporary hits there (“Promises,” “New Day For You,” “Time and Tide”). Basia proved unique, defying categories and appealing to a wide audience. This versatility earned her two consecutive number one Billboard Contemporary Jazz albums upon the release of the follow-up, London Warsaw New York, which topped that chart for most of 1990. A second tour full of sold-out marquees followed, pushed by the breakout success of the single “Cruising For Bruising,” and resulting in a second platinum record.

A more vivid portrait of the artists emerged with 1994’s The Sweetest Illusion as a more organic sound was developed, with a full band and a deeper variety of musical texture. Once again their appeal continued across genre lines as “Drunk On Love” became a #1 Billboard Club Play hit while The Sweetest Illusion rode the pop album chart. The resulting world tour culminated in a two-week run on Broadway, recorded for the live album Basia on Broadway.

Danny, along with guitarist/vocalist Mark Reilly, pulled Basia back into the fray to recast their early sound for the 2004 Matt Bianco album Matt’s Mood. The collaboration combined pop, swing, Latin, lounge and spy-soundtrack sounds to great effect, and when on tour they were met with enthusiastic response from a loyal, dedicated fan base thrilled to see Basia back in action. The encouraging reaction gave birth to a fruitful creative period leading up to It’s That Girl Again.

The songs on It’s That Girl Again reprise Basia’s global pop sound, fusing stick-in-your-head-for-days melodies with complex arrangements that don’t overshadow the heartfelt lyrics or stunning instrumentation. Each song is a dedication to someone in Basia’s life, though her narratives describe characters many can relate to. The musical backing is inspired and inventive, taking the listener to surprising places. “If Not Now Then When” is the perfect reintroduction to the Basia sound, with an irresistible melody, romantic lyrics and lively percussion. The honest confession of “A Gift” is set to a lilting melody framed by acoustic guitars, and “Someone for Everyone” sees Danny pulling out all the stops with piano, gospel-tinged organ and keyboard. “Everybody’s On The Move” jets in with an upbeat rock feel while “There’s A Tear” is a plaintive ballad recalling Stevie Wonder’s 80s love songs.

Intensity reigns in the sharp tango of “Love Lies Bleeding” and within the stunning “I Must” as a measured verse surprisingly explodes into a chorus out of a Bond film chase scene. “Blame It On The Summer” is an ideal warm-weather chill-out track while the multilayered vocals of “Two Islands” give way to an island feel that counters the tender subject matter. The lighthearted “Winners” brings to mind the joy of Carnaval, and the smooth polish of “They Know Nothing About Us” highlights Basia’s emphatic lyric. “Amelki Śmiech” celebrates new life with a raucous party scene and buoyant heart that defies language, leading nicely into the evocative title track.

Joining Basia and Danny is a tight band of accomplished musicians including guitarist Peter White, trumpeter Kevin Robinson (Simply Red, Incognito) and drummer Marc Parnell (Joan Armatrading, Damian Rice).

In this age of highly processed and compressed vocals, It’s That Girl Again reminds us what it’s like to hear honest, straightforward singing with genuine feeling again. From the first strum of the guitar to the last cheer from the crowd, the album is a great showing from an established artist firmly planted in the here-and-now. Those long- frustrated by the current state of pop music are craving something original and real. Just in time comes Basia and It’s That Girl Again. ---Leslie Osborn, web.mac.com

Time and Tide is the debut album by Polish jazz and pop singer–songwriter Basia, released in the United States on August 21, 1987 by Epic Records. Co-produced and mostly co-written by Basia herself and Danny White, it showcases considerable influences from Brazilian music, noted in the track "Astrud", a tribute to Astrud Gilberto.

On November 3, 1989 the album was awarded a platinum sales certification by the RIAA for surpassing one million copies sold in the U.S. alone, with the singles "Time and Tide", "New Day for You", and "Promises" all achieving adult contemporary success and the former becoming a top thirty pop hit as well. "New Day for You" was also covered in Japanese by J-pop and future enka singer and actress Yoko Nagayama.

Time and Tide was directly followed by the even more successful London Warsaw New York.
