Although actor/pop singer Sylvie Vartan is Bulgarian, she would eventually receive recognition from the French, usually singing entirely in the language of her adopted homeland. Born August 15, 1944, in Iskretz, Bulgaria, Vartan showed great talent for both acting and singing at an early age, resulting in an appearance in the Bulgarian film Under the Yoke in 1950. Two years later (while only ten years old), Vartan and her family relocated to France. 1961 would prove to be an important year for Vartan's career, as she entered a recording studio for the first time, picked up some TV work, and appeared at the famed Olympia Theater. The early '60s saw the release of a steady stream of singles, EPs, and albums (such as 1962's Sylvie), in addition to further appearances in European movies -- including A Moonlight in Maubeuge and Just for Fun.

Other impressive accomplishments for Vartan in the early '60s included recording a pair of songs ("If I Sing" and "Most Beautiful to Go to Dance") with famed country artists Chet Atkins and Ray Stevens, and playing on the same bill as the Beatles at the Olympia in January of 1964. During the mid-'60s, Vartan concentrated on making inroads to the American music market, as she appeared on such TV shows as The Ed Sullivan Show, Hullaballooh, and Shindig, while one of her best singles, "2'35 de Bonheur," hit the charts in early 1967. Sylvie Vartan est née le 15 août 1944 à Iskretz en Bulga­rie. Peu après sa nais­sance, la maison fami­liale est réqui­si­tion­née par l’ar­mée sovié­tique. Ses parents, Georges Vartan et Ilona Mayer, se réfu­gient à Sofia, la capi­tale. Elle a un frère aîné, Edmond dit Eddie, né en 1937. A l’âge de six ans, la petite Sylvie rencontre le monde du spec­tacle en décro­chant un petit rôle dans un film d'un ami de la famille. Mais la vie en Bulga­rie est de plus en plus diffi­cile et contraint la famille à s'exiler à Paris au début des années 50.

Eddie Vartan devient un célèbre compo­si­teur et chef d’or­chestre. C’est par son inter­mé­diaire qu’elle rencontre des produc­teurs et a la chance de se produire dès ses débuts sur la scène de l’Olym­pia, en 1961. C'est le début d'une longue disco­gra­phie (plus de 60 albums en France et à l'étran­ger) ponc­tuée de grands succès (La plus belle pour aller danser, La Maritza, J'ai un problème, L'amour c'est comme une ciga­rette, C'est fatal, Soleil bleu…).

En 1990, elle fait un émou­vant retour dans son pays natal et donne un concert devant un public bulgare conquis. En 2004, Syvie Vartan publie son auto­bio­gra­phie, Entre l'ombre et la lumière. En novembre 2011, elle fête ses 50 ans de carrière salle Pleyel à Paris et fait ses débuts sur les planches au théâtre Mari­gny avec la pièce L'amour la mort les fringues adap­tée par Danièle Thomp­son. En octobre 2014, elle est à l'affiche du film Tu veux ou tu veux pas ? de Tonie Marshall avec Patrick Bruel et Sophie Marceau.

Côté vie privée, Sylvie Vartan épouse Johnny Hally­day en avril 1965 à Locon­ville et donne nais­sance à leur fils, David Hally­day, le 14 août 1966. Ils forment l'un des couples les plus glamours de l'époque des yéyé.

Puis, deux acci­dents de voiture vont boule­ver­ser la vie de la chan­teuse. Le premier en avril 1968, elle est au volant sur une route dépar­te­men­tale des Yvelines quand un camion vient percu­ter sa voiture. Sa passa­gère, marraine de David, décède. Le second survient en 1970, quand Johnny Hally­day perd le contrôle de sa DS. Sylvie Vartan griè­ve­ment bles­sée doit subir de multiples opéra­tions afin de retrou­ver son vrai visage. ---gala.fr
