Isabelle Boulay (born in Sainte-Felicite, Quebec) is a francophone Canadian pop singer.

In 1990, some friends registered her at the Petite-Vallee song festival without her consent, but she completed a performance there and was regarded as a huge success. The following year she won at the Granby song festival for her rendition of Jacques Brel's "Amsterdam". That same year she was invited to take part in the festival Les FrancoFolies de Montreal. In 1993 she represented Radio Canada at the "Truffe de P?rigueux" festival held in Perigord, France. She carried off the prize for Best Singer in the "chanson francophone" (francophone song) category. Following her success in France, she was noticed by songwriter Luc Plamondon who was looking for emerging talents to perform in a new production of his rock opera Starmania. There, Boulay portrayed the role of Marie-Jeanne.

In 1996, Boulay released her debut album, Fallait pas. Also in 1996, Boulay's vocal portrayal of internationally-successful Quebec singer Alys Robi was featured in a television drama. Since then, she has had considerable success both in Quebec and in Europe. Her biggest-selling album in France was the 2000 release Parle-moi ("talk to me"). On the 14th of February 2008, she was presented with the medal of the Assemblee Nationale of Quebec by the mayor of her hometown, in recognition of her contribution to the arts. -- lyricsfreak.com

Le quatrième album d’Isabelle Boulay, Mieux qu’ici-bas, place la chanteuse dans le club très sélect des interprètes qui ont réussi à s’imposer en France comme au Québec. Une impressionnante équipe l’entoure sur cet album, où l’on trouve notamment des textes signés Jean Fauque (Bashung) et Serge Lama, des musiques de Richard Cocciante, Patrick Bruel et France D’Amour. Tant de grands noms pourraient écraser la chanteuse, mais ce serait sans compter avec la forte personnalité et la sensibilité d’Isabelle Boulay.

Les arrangements, parfois un peu trop chargés, laissent quand même à sa voix pure la place qui lui revient. La très jolie ballade “Jamais assez loin”, du surprenant tandem Louise Forestier et Zachary Richard, séduit avec ses accents country. Les efforts de cette imposante escouade de créateurs ont été récompensés. Mieux qu’ici-bas a obtenu un prix Victoire en France et un prix Félix au Québec. Ces trophées, ainsi que l’adhésion d’un public conquis, confirment l’immense succès que la talentueuse interprète obtient depuis quelques années. ---Diane Jean, amazon.ca

Part of the Franco-country movement in Quebec, but entirely separate in tone from some of the older notables, Isabelle Boulay takes a more modern, more somber approach to her music, as shown on Nos Lendemains. The tone on her 2008 album is generally one of mild sadness, with Boulay imbuing her vocals with just a touch of melancholy. The tone, however, is served extraordinarily well by Boulay, fitting herself into the mood precisely and carrying the listener through a form of modern country music that doesn't come off as manufactured or simple, but instead suggests a Western take on something like Portuguese fado. The blues is inherent in her delivery, and her vocals can silkily portray that melancholy without becoming another drop in the proverbial river of down-spirited country music. With the exception of a couple of foreign-language pieces, the majority of Nos Lendemains is written specifically for Boulay (largely by French pop songwriters, with a few major names included), and capitalizes on the quality of her voice. Her quiet vocal tinkerings can easily outshine the boldest attempts to perform a simple country song by some of the more stereotypical Francophone divas. --- Adam Greenberg, Rovi

Even under the risk of this sounding like an overstatement , I have no problem saying that Isabelle Boulay is the best Francophone singer today. Yes, even better than Patricia Kaas...Isabelle has a heart and soul that floods her music like a wave! Like many of the best Francophone singers today, Isabelle is a proud daughter of Quebec. But it is Quebec that should be proud of her! This phenomenon of a singer made it big time in France, where she will be touring for two months. And that includes a full week of shows at the famous Olympia, in Paris. This CD in particular, finds a solid, mature performer at the peak of her career.
