Although invented in Germany, it quickly made its way to Argentina and became synonymous with the Argentine tango.</p> <p>A new instrument in a new land, it played waltzes and polkas, but was soon to join in with the guitars, violins and flutes playing the hot new musical genre being created in Argentina - Milonga. But that music was fast - and nobody playing the bandoneón (they were all new to it) could keep-up with the other players.</p> <p>The music had to slow down for bandoneón players to join in. Tango is born. Lia Uya – Mientes </em></pre> <p> </p> <p>Spain might have still been under the boot of a Fascist government and oppressive church but the cultural revolution still found a way in and caused longer hair and shorter skirts just like in the rest of the civilised world. This cabinet of curiosities from the tail end of the Franco era combines all sorts of styles, from pop to soul, psych to yé-yé, with some classics, some oddities (Marisel’s ‘Mi Baby’ is like a Fast Show parody!) and plenty of memorable artists.</p> <p>The strange thing about Spain is the way their pop absorbed influences – the artists here include Venezuelans, Yugoslavs and “the Chilean Brenda Lee”, while there are loads of cover versions, from Sonia’s ‘Aqua En Mi Nube’ (‘Get Off My Cloud’) to Lia Uya’s superior treatment of Three Dog Night’s ‘Liar’ (here ‘Mientes’) and the insane Spanish language cover of Georgie Fame’s ‘Yeh Yeh’ by Los 3 Sudamericanos. Then there are the unacknowledged steals; the modern boy sought by Pili y Mili in ‘Un Chico Moderno’ must be a looter judging by the shameless rip off from ‘Money’ for the introduction.</p> <p>One admirable Spanish characteristic was to back girl singers with garage bands so Marisol’s ‘Johnny’ has a feverish garage-pop sound while the brilliant ‘Sola Estoy’ by Lorella con Los Shakers sounds exactly like the kind of great garage-soul that Greg Cartwright started producing two decades later in Memphis. There’s plenty of pop you’d call quirky too, like Margarita Sierra’s US single ‘Cha Cha Twist’ with its Annette Funicello-like charm while Encarnita Polo began her post yé-yé career in 1971 with a flamenco-ed up ‘Hava Naguila’! The singers are uniformly great (it’s just coincidence that the Catalan label releasing many of these tracks was called Belter) and the collection takes in everything from soul dancers to groovy pop, with the pick perhaps being Marta Baizan’s ‘Te Veré En Septiembre’ (a version of the Tempos’ ‘See You In September’), described in the notes as “an enduring hymn to yé-yé”. This cabinet of curiosities from the tail end of the Franco era combines all sorts of styles, from pop to soul, psych to yé-yé, with some classics, some oddities (Marisel’s ‘Mi Baby’ is like a Fast Show parody!) and plenty of memorable artists.</p> <p>The strange thing about Spain is the way their pop absorbed influences – the artists here include Venezuelans, Yugoslavs and “the Chilean Brenda Lee”, while there are loads of cover versions, from Sonia’s ‘Aqua En Mi Nube’ (‘Get Off My Cloud’) to Lia Uya’s superior treatment of Three Dog Night’s ‘Liar’ (here ‘Mientes’) and the insane Spanish language cover of Georgie Fame’s ‘Yeh Yeh’ by Los 3 Sudamericanos. Then there are the unacknowledged steals; the modern boy sought by Pili y Mili in ‘Un Chico Moderno’ must be a looter judging by the shameless rip off from ‘Money’ for the introduction.</p> <p>One admirable Spanish characteristic was to back girl singers with garage bands so Marisol’s ‘Johnny’ has a feverish garage-pop sound while the brilliant ‘Sola Estoy’ by Lorella con Los Shakers sounds exactly like the kind of great garage-soul that Greg Cartwright started producing two decades later in Memphis. There’s plenty of pop you’d call quirky too, like Margarita Sierra’s US single ‘Cha Cha Twist’ with its Annette Funicello-like charm while Encarnita Polo began her post yé-yé career in 1971 with a flamenco-ed up ‘Hava Naguila’! The singers are uniformly great (it’s just coincidence that the Catalan label releasing many of these tracks was called Belter) and the collection takes in everything from soul dancers to groovy pop, with the pick perhaps being Marta Baizan’s ‘Te Veré En Septiembre’ (a version of the Tempos’ ‘See You In September’), described in the notes as “an enduring hymn to yé-yé”. It has been performed as a street dance at carnival, the pre-Lenten celebration, for almost 100 years. Many versions of the Samba (from Baion to Marcha) are danced at the local carnival in Rio. The ballroom Samba or Carioca Samba is derived from the rural "Rocking Samba" and has been known for many years. (The Carioca is a small river that runs through Rio de Janiero - hence the name Carioca refers to the people of Rio.) Today Samba is still very popular in Rio. During carnival time there are "schools of Samba" involving thousands of elaborately-costumed dancers presenting a national theme based on music typical of Brazil and Rio in particular.</p> <p>Before 1914 it was known under a Brazilian name "Maxixe". As early as 1923 an international meeting of professors of dancing took note of the rise of the Samba's popularity, particularly in France. A French dance book published by Paul Boucher in 1928 included Samba instructions. The dance was introduced to United States movie audiences in 1933 when Fred Astaire and Dolores Del Rio danced the Carioca in Flying Down to Rio and several years later, Carmen Miranda danced the Samba in That Night in Rio. A Samba exhibition was given at the November 1938 meeting of the New York Society of Teachers of Dancing. General interest in the Samba was stimulated at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, where Samba music was played at the Brazilian Pavilion. A few years later the Brazilian composer Ary Barroso wrote the classic Samba, "Brasil," which quickly became a hit, and in 1944 he went to Hollywood to write the score for the musical Brazil.</p> <p>Samba has a very specific rhythm, highlighted to its best by characteristic Brazilian musical instruments: originally called tamborim, chocalho, reco-reco and cabaca. Much of Samba music came from daily life in Rio, the first famous example being "Pelo Telefone" composed by Donga. To achieve the true character of the Samba a dancer must give it a happy, flirtatious and exuberant interpretation. Many figures, used in the Samba today, require a pelvic tilt (Samba tic) action. This action is difficult to accomplish, but without it the dance loses much of its effect. It has been performed as a street dance at carnival, the pre-Lenten celebration, for almost 100 years. Many versions of the Samba (from Baion to Marcha) are danced at the local carnival in Rio. The ballroom Samba or Carioca Samba is derived from the rural "Rocking Samba" and has been known for many years. (The Carioca is a small river that runs through Rio de Janiero - hence the name Carioca refers to the people of Rio.) Today Samba is still very popular in Rio. During carnival time there are "schools of Samba" involving thousands of elaborately-costumed dancers presenting a national theme based on music typical of Brazil and Rio in particular.</p> <p>Before 1914 it was known under a Brazilian name "Maxixe". As early as 1923 an international meeting of professors of dancing took note of the rise of the Samba's popularity, particularly in France. A French dance book published by Paul Boucher in 1928 included Samba instructions. The dance was introduced to United States movie audiences in 1933 when Fred Astaire and Dolores Del Rio danced the Carioca in Flying Down to Rio and several years later, Carmen Miranda danced the Samba in That Night in Rio. A Samba exhibition was given at the November 1938 meeting of the New York Society of Teachers of Dancing. General interest in the Samba was stimulated at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, where Samba music was played at the Brazilian Pavilion. A few years later the Brazilian composer Ary Barroso wrote the classic Samba, "Brasil," which quickly became a hit, and in 1944 he went to Hollywood to write the score for the musical Brazil.</p> <p>Samba has a very specific rhythm, highlighted to its best by characteristic Brazilian musical instruments: originally called tamborim, chocalho, reco-reco and cabaca. Much of Samba music came from daily life in Rio, the first famous example being "Pelo Telefone" composed by Donga. To achieve the true character of the Samba a dancer must give it a happy, flirtatious and exuberant interpretation. Many figures, used in the Samba today, require a pelvic tilt (Samba tic) action. This action is difficult to accomplish, but without it the dance loses much of its effect. My only concern is, that I do not know if the Edmundo Rivero recordings were his older ones when his voice was fantastic (40's to early 50's), or newer recordings when he had just about lost his voice. Barring that, I would definitely recommend getting this CD because it contains more tangos from the "golden age" than any other compilation CD I have seen.
