Recorded in 1969, during a "howling snowstorm" in Stockholm Sweden of all places, Elis and Toots conjured up a steaming mid-summer Brazilian beach in the studio. Elis is on fire! Her musical group 'Elis Cinco" is brilliant and audibly enthusiastic. Singing with a wide range of emotions and tossing off gymnastic phrases with ease, Elis is incredible. She wields her voice like a knief, cutting quickly and deeply. Toots is equally brilliant and the entire ensemble plays like old musical friends. I speak no Portuguese but this music is as clear as a crystal. The sultry "Barquinho" will slow your breathing and "Wave" is new again. She totally personalizes "Aquarela Do Brasil" and infuses it with humor and "crickets".

I bought this CD primarily because of Toots. I had recently bought the excellent "Chez Toots" and noticed this CD in his discography. I popped it in the CD player and wandered away. The next morning the CD player woke me up with "Wave" and I laid there amazed for the next hour. As a jazz fan, I KNOW singers and this singer was someone very, very special. She understood nuance, emotion, improvisation, the blues, how to deliver a knockout punch and leave us wanting more. It's no wonder they called her 'The Hurricane'. Now I'm collecting more Elis recordings and have just purchased the self-titled first CD cut by her talented daughter, "Maria Rita". As much as I will always love Gal Costa, with this CD, Elis (over twenty years after her tragic accidental death) has stolen my musical heart. She ranks in the company of Ella, Sarah, and Carmen. I wonder if she realized she was really a jazz singer. Believe me, this CD should be required listening for ALL music fans. Snowstorm? What snowstorm? LOL. --- RBSProds, amazon.com

Severino (Sivuca) Dias de Oliveira (26 March 1930, Itabaiana, Brazil – 14 December 2006, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil) was a Brazilian accordionist and guitarist. In addition to in his home state of Paraíba, in Recife, and in Rio de Janeiro, he worked and lived in Paris, Lisbon, and New York on and off throughout his life.

He is best known internationally for his work with Scandinavian jazz musicians in the 1980s. His most famous songs are the Brazilian popular classic João e Maria with lyrics by Chico Buarque and the accordion standard Feira de Mangaio. He is famous for his use of makeshift instruments playing alongside conventional ones and for his versatility, fusing traditional regional styles like forró and Chorinho with jazz, bossa, classical, and other musical forms.

Sivuca and Hermeto Pascoal, both versatile multi-instrumentalists with albinism, have worked together and are sometimes confused with each other.

His professional career began in Pernambuco where he went at the age of 15, and continued in his first album with Humberto Teixeira (1950), leading to work in radio and television in Rio de Janeiro from 1955. With «Os Brasileiros» he toured Europe (1958). He moved to New York (1964-1976) and worked with Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte among others. Archival footage of his work with Makeba can be seen in Mika Kaurismäki's documentary "Mama Africa" (2011).

He recorded with Putte Wickman (P.W. & Sivuca, 1969), Ulf Wakenius' «Guitars Unlimited» (1987) and Sylvia Vrethammar (Rio de Janeiry Blue, 1985; Rendezvois in Rio, 1995). His «Sivuca Brazilian Group» toured Scandinavia in 1990.

He was hospitalized on December 12, and died on December 14, 2006 after a two-year struggle with cancer. ---wikipedia

The great harmonica player Toots Thielemans teams up on this 1972 date with the talented veteran swing violinist Svend Asmussen but the results are less interesting than one might hope. Backed by a rather anonymous-sounding rhythm section comprised of Kjell Ohman's organ and electric piano, electric bassist Stefan Brolund and/or acoustic bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Ed Thigpen, Svend and Toots play fine but the material is rather erratic. Perhaps Thielemans had been in the studios too long at this point, but the somewhat commercial A&M LP (which was originally released in Europe on Sonet) is generally quite forgettable. Jean "Toots" Thielemans' musical education started early—he had already started to play the accordion at the age of three. But it was his skill on the harmonica that brought him international fame, and it's that skill which is to the fore on European Quartet Live, featuring a set of well-known tunes taken from concerts in 2006, '07 and '08. It's the second Thielemans live album to be released in 2010 after The Live Takes, Volume 1 (In + Out Records), which was recorded in the '90s and with a different lineup of musicians, but it also includes versions of the first three tracks to be found on European Quartet Live.

Thielemans was in his mid-80s when performing these concerts, but the precision and tone of his playing could well be that of a much younger musician. This is an album which has a comforting familiarity: a relaxed set that could have been recorded in a small club or even at a private party for friends, rather than in a series of concert halls. The European Quartet's other members give Thielemans sympathetic backing, the result, at least in part, of their long musical association. Drummer Hans van Oosterhout is particularly notable, providing subtle and inventive rhythms that are always interesting but never intrusive.

For the most part, these tunes are familiar, and the band's arrangements are mainstream—beautifully played, but with no surprises. The songs are ideal for Thieleman's warm and romantic style, but his playing is especially suited to fellow-Belgian Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas," and Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prevert's Great American Songbook standard, "Les Feuilles Mortes," also known as "Autumn Leaves," in which the harmonicist closes with a bar or two of the French anthem, "La Marseillaise."

The quartet's version of John Barry's theme to the film soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy (1969)—on which Thielemans also played—features a fine double-bass solo from Hein Van de Geyn, while on Thielemans' "Bluesette," the harmonicist adopts an accordion-like tone. Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" and George Gershwin's "Summertime" are also treated imaginatively by the quartet. "Summertime" gets an upbeat, swinging arrangement, its opening bearing more than a passing resemblance to Miles Davis' "All Blues," with both Thielemans and pianist Karel Boehlee delivering positive solos. Thielemans performs "Round Midnight" unaccompanied, and it's an inspired take on this classic tune, showcasing the harmonicist's continued ability to play with empathy and emotion.

The venues at which European Quartet Live was recorded are not identified, but their audiences all give the band an enthusiastic welcome, as if they are greeting old friends. Excellent work from pleasant sounding jazz combo recorded in Paris 1961. Thielemans plays terrific jazz guitar licks, there is no harmonica but some whistling now and there. Compared to Montgomery, Reinhardt etc. this guy maybe was too laid back to become a star but in many ways his playing is far more listenable than most of others due to an atmosphere between musicians involved that clearly states teamwork instead of competition. This guy most probably knew he had what it takes for a long life professional musical career, he needed not prove anything more than just make sounds that to this day are very enjoyable to most listeners. --- A. Toots was a one of a kind. How many men would even try to play wonderful, bop oriented jazz on a chromatic harmonica? Although the liner notes claim that this Concord release was Toots Thielemans' first recording as a leader in more than a dozen years, somehow the harmonica great's 14 European dates (not to mention sets released by Stash and Pablo) were overlooked. In any case, this is a pretty definitive session by the harmonica virtuoso who is joined by pianist Fred Hersch, either Marc Johnson or Harvie Swartz on bass, and drummer Joey Baron. The material is filled with challenging and generally underplayed standards (including Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil," Thad Jones' "Three and One," Benny Carter's lyrical "Only Trust Your Heart," and Thelonious Monk's "Little Rootie Tootie"), plus two fine Hersch originals. Ranging from hard bop to Brazilian music and post-bop, this is a consistently enjoyable and highly recommended outing. ---Scott Yanow, Rovi
