Sarah Vaughan's heavenly vocalizing and Billy Eckstine's velvety deep tone proved an ideal match during the late '40s and throughout the '50s. This 1957 Irving Berlin collection qualifies as the high point of that collaboration. Sometimes surpassing their splendid solo sides, Vaughan and Eckstine obviously revel in each other's company here, seamlessly blending their voices on most every track. Draped in Hal Mooney's fine and unobtrusive charts, the singers particularly shine on such well-tread Berlin fare as "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" and "Cheek to Cheek"; there are equally splendid readings of the rarely covered "Easter Parade" and "Now It Can Be Told" as well. Although Count Basie gets top billing, he actually doesn't even appear on this set. Basie's Orchestra and pianist Kirk Stuart are purely in a supporting role behind the magnificent voice of Sarah Vaughan, other than a couple of short spots for trumpeter Joe Newman and Frank Foster's tenor. Sometimes Vaughan sounds overly mannered and seems to give little weight to the words she is singing, but her wide range and impeccable musicianship carry the day. Highlights include "Perdido," "Mean to Me," and "You Go to My Head," and the set is understandably recommended more for Sarah Vaughan fans than Count Basie collectors. How Long Has This Been Going On? is a 1978 studio album by Sarah Vaughan accompanied by a quartet led by Oscar Peterson. All ten of the melodies are veteran standards that she knew backwards but still greeted with enthusiasm. A very good example of late-period Sarah Vaughan.

When Sarah Vaughan recorded this session in 1978, her voice was still one of the finest instruments in jazz, an almost impossible combination of resonant depths, subtly sparkling highs, and myriad slides that could join one note or word to the next. She's accompanied here by an all-star quartet of pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Louis Bellson. There are moments of inspired exchange and improvisatory brilliance from the quartet, but the emphasis is less on their skills as soloists than on their extraordinary taste, Peterson and Pass revealing once again their special abilities as supporting players, highlighting another artist's every note. Vaughan's performances here of "Midnight Sun" and "Body and Soul" are virtuosic statements, as inspired as anything in her later career. --Stuart Broomer

What can one say about a singer who Ella Fitzgerald described as the best voice of all time? What Sarah does is miraculous. Some of the songs are a bit weak, but, she makes them better and the great songs, she absolutely soars. Her phrasing and incredible range (some say 3 octaves, but, it sounds more like 5) make this album worth every penny. Dreamsville, Slow Hot Wind, Mr. Lucky are, for me, the highlights. There will never be another female singer with a voice like Sarah. This album is a good reminder. ---amazon.com

What a fantastic marriage of musical talents ! How perfect could a collaboration be???? This is really outstanding Sarah on an even higher plane. That Mancini material is all just soooooo delicious and Sarah knows just what to do to make it all so steamy, luscious, whimsical and serenely beautiful. Sarah makes every song lyric important and true......which, is why she could continue forever. From the earliest recordings to her last; she did more than just display the most gorgeous voice in jazz history.....she made every song lyric come alive with personal meaning. I am also a huge fan of Henry Mancini. Naturally, I have a lot to be thankful for ! You will too, when you listen to this wonderful recording. Some of the recordings sound a little muffled and not nearly as crisp as a recording of today's technology. That hasn't stopped me from enjoying it, immensely. Sarah figured why doesn't the greatest jazz voice in the world perform the most famed group's (Beatles)material in the world.For Sarah to get on Atlantic she had to sound commercial the way Atlantic wanted Sarah to sound.Atlantic did it with Ella,Peggy & exceptionally with Esther Phillips.Atlantic makes Anita Baker sound pop & one way because now days jazz is not all that marketable.I am a Vaughan fanatic & it is fun to hear Sass do rock & roll which she seldom does and her latin rythms on "I Love Her & Something".The songs are famous & they are fantastically revamped.Atlantic let Sarah do her own inimitatable standard way of singing the last three songs "Here There & Everywhere,Long & Winding Road,& Yesterday" in ballad form making beautiful voice exercises & interpretations hitting those soprano notes of these famous songs.One could consider this another one Sarah's songbook albums showing her absolute versatility.It's different & I love it. --- Richard Meyer, amazon.com

With the exception of three songs recorded earlier, all of this set (the first of two CDs) dates from 1957 and finds the great Sarah Vaughan accompanied by her regular pianist Jimmy Jones plus a studio orchestra arranged by Hal Mooney. Since these 15 selections are fairly concise (two to five minutes apiece), the emphasis is on the melody and the original lyrics without all that much improvising taking place. From the start of her career, Sarah Vaughan had a wondrous voice. She never declined and her voice remained a miracle throughout her career. She learned about bop phrasing during 1943-1944 when she was with the orchestras of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine (singing alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker) and, although she would perform many pop tunes throughout her life, she always phrased like a jazz singer and was never shy to change notes and improvise. This magnificent four-CD set has Sassy's first 94 recordings, everything she recorded during 1944-1950. Vaughan is heard on two songs with the Eckstine Orchestra (one of which was taken from a broadcast), on the December 31, 1944, Leonard Feather-organized session that found her performing "Interlude" (a vocal version of "A Night in Tunisia") and "East of the Sun," and four songs with Bird and Diz, and she makes appearances with clarinetist Tony Scott, violinist Stuff Smith, the John Kirby Sextet, Georgie Auld's big band, and trombonist Dicky Wells & His Big Seven. In 1946, Vaughan signed with the Musicraft label and all of her performances for that company are here, including "If You Could See Me Now," "Everything I Have Is Yours," "Don't Worry 'Bout Me," "September Song," "Tenderly," "The Lord's Prayer," "I Feel So Smoochie," "It's Magic," and "Gentleman Friend." In 1949, Vaughan started recording for Columbia, and she is heard on some commercial dates plus such tunes as "Black Coffee," "Tonight I Shall Sleep," "I Cried for You," and "Perdido" in addition to four vocal duets with Billy Eckstine. Best of all are the eight numbers that she recorded during May 18-19, 1950, with an octet including trumpeter Miles Davis, trombonist Bennie Green, clarinetist Tony Scott, and tenor saxophonist Budd Johnson. All four horn players take perfect eight-bar solos on "Ain't Misbehavin'," and other gems from this project include "It Might as Well Be Spring," "Mean to Me," and "Nice Work if You Can Get It." Sarah Vaughan's box for the Proper label (which includes a very good 44-page booklet) makes for a superb (and surprisingly inexpensive) purchase and allows one to have a large slice of Sassy's recording career. --- Scott Yanow, AMG
