<p>So you guys are probably wondering why ol‘ potty mouth Mike has started talking like a reject from the ’20s. Shocking as this might sound, I haven’t lost my mind (ya can’t lose something you ain’t got in the first place). I was just getting in character for my review of Twist is the New Twerk, by Scott Bradlee and the Postmodern Jukebox.</p>
<p>Ever wished you could go back? Waaay back. Back to the Roaring ’20s. A time when men were men, and women were . . . oh, um, okay, yeah, the ’20s sucked from the whole “gender equality” point of view. What most of us can agree with, however, is that the music our more sexist ancestors left behind was pretty awesome. What? You say you hate swing? You say you’re a hip-hop guy/girl? Well then, what are you doing reading this? Go and listen to Yeezus (trust me, it’s worth it).</p>
<p>If you’re not a beautiful little fool, and enjoy swing music, flappers, and general, gregariously genial, gaudily grand Gatsbydom, then you’re in for a treat. Covers and re-imaginings of songs are usually the domain of bored and/or very talented YouTubers. Scott Bradlee, however, has taken the whole re-imagining Top 40 tracks thing to a whole new level. He and his Postmodern Jukebox take popular songs like Macklemore’s ‘Thrift Shop’, Lady Gaga’s ‘Just Dance’, and even the Pitbull/Ke$ha collaboration that is ‘Timber’, and give them a retro, 1920s twist. It’s quite a treat to hear lyrics like “Ice on the fringe, it’s so damn frosty, / The people like, “Damn! That’s a cold ass honkey”, pop up on a track that sounds like it was ripped right out of F. <p>Ever since I was in middle school, I knew I was something of an old soul. While my friends listened to ’90s pop hits, I listened to old jazz and Motown records and spent hours upon hours attempting to figure out their inner workings on the piano. Listening to these records truly transported me — I appreciated the creativity, skill, and — above all — natural talent that went into their creation. Years later, as a musician living in New York City, I formed Postmodern Jukebox as way to bring the classic sounds I loved back into the mainstream, and to build a platform to celebrate real, unadulterated, deserving talent.</p>
<p>Today, it’s been five years since Postmodern Jukebox performed its first show, and our family has grown to include nearly fifty singers and another fifty instrumentalists, all of whom now have the opportunity to perform the classic genres they love for the audiences who appreciate them. The vocalists sing every note live, without any tuning help. The musicians make every sound you hear on stage and in my living room with the instruments you see them playing. That doesn’t matter to everyone, but it matters to us and I believe it matters to our fans. We do it the old fashioned way and we love every second of it.</p>
<p>Thanks to our millions of fans around the world, Postmodern Jukebox has become the rotating collective of musical outcasts that have somehow found a home and there are still many incredible, undiscovered talents out there that I really am excited to share with you. And its my promise to continue to share with you, the best natural performers from around the world, and give them a platform they deserve in this wonderful, musical universe we call Postmodern Jukebox.</p>

<p>I was thrilled when I discovered Postmodern Jukebox, and was initially most taken with some of their oldest work, mostly with Robyn (and Puddles). Never-the-less, the CD is fantastic, especially if you like to hear popular singers singing their hits in different ways, rather than just listening to the mainstream version, try out Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, you'll love it. He has others; I just learned of this one through a friend. I plan to collect them all. But again, I think the work definitely merits being obtainable on CD. <p>How did Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" become a '50s-style doo wop number? Since when was Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" about an upright bass fiddle? At what point did Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" evolve into a '20s hot jazz tune? And whose idea was it to rework Lorde's "Royals" into a polished ballad sung by a sad clown? It's all part of the topsy-turvy world of Postmodern Jukebox, an ongoing musical project spearheaded by pianist and arranger Scott Bradlee, who takes contemporary pop and rock tunes and fashions new arrangements for them that cast them in an unpredictable variety of musical styles from the past. Born on Long Island, Bradlee relocated to New York City after studying jazz at the University of Hartford. While playing gigs at restaurants and nightclubs in New York City, Bradlee began experimenting with ragtime and jazz arrangements of pop tunes from the '80s, and he recorded several self-released digital albums of his offbeat versions of well-known melodies, as well as performances that interpolated seemingly dissimilar songs of different eras. Bradlee upped the ante on these experiments in 2012 with an album called A Motown Tribute to Nickelback, but as he began imagining a new platform for his experiments, he thought of YouTube, where he had been posting solo performance videos since 2009. In 2013, Bradlee began posting weekly videos in which he and a rotating cast of musicians and vocalists performed a new song each week, recorded live in a single take in Bradlee's living room. In September 2013, Bradlee posted his '50s-style reimagining of Cyrus' "We Can't Stop," and the clip soon went viral, racking up over four million views in less than two months and topping 14 million two years later. Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox channel was soon racking up Internet successes on a regular basis, and Bradlee continued to release both videos and albums based on his playful fun-house covers of popular songs. <p>In 2013, Jazz musician Scott Bradlee formed Postmodern Jukebox, a rotating group of musicians producing covers of pop songs in the styles of jazz, ragtime, and swing. The group burst onto the public radar with their doo-wop cover of Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop", featuring vocal group The Tee-Tones. As the viral surge grew, Bradlee was interviewed by news outlets such as NPR and also performed live on Good Morning America and Fuse. The group visited Cosmopolitan Magazine's New York office for a year-end review of their work and popular songs from the year.</p>
<p>Several artists have publicly noted their appreciation for the group's work. Among the group's prominent guest musicians are Dave Koz, who collaborated with them in a jazz covers of "Careless Whisper" and the Game of Thrones theme music, and Niia, who joined them for a "space jazz" version of "The End of the World". <p>In 2013, Jazz musician Scott Bradlee formed Postmodern Jukebox, a rotating group of musicians producing covers of pop songs in the styles of jazz, ragtime, and swing. The group burst onto the public radar with their doo-wop cover of Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop", featuring vocal group The Tee-Tones. As the viral surge grew, Bradlee was interviewed by news outlets such as NPR and also performed live on Good Morning America and Fuse. The group visited Cosmopolitan Magazine's New York office for a year-end review of their work and popular songs from the year.</p>
<p>Several artists have publicly noted their appreciation for the group's work. Among the group's prominent guest musicians are Dave Koz, who collaborated with them in a jazz covers of "Careless Whisper" and the Game of Thrones theme music, and Niia, who joined them for a "space jazz" version of "The End of the World".
