"Konfusion" made in 2005 by Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło allows you to feel dusty, smokey, dark touch of newly freed Polish jazz of 50's and 60', rearranged in complex and groovy tracks adequate for our modern sublimed tastes. Perfectly mixed and mastered, "Konfusion" takes listener for intimate ride from first to last track, constantly stirring our imagination and immersing us in dark, moody city full of old cars, shady persons, street lanterns and modernist buildings. Well, if you could imagine that Skalpel group is like slightly anachronistic, modernist architecture duet, then their "Konfusion" is masterpiece of brutalist trend: not for everyone tastes, hauntingly strange, yet insanely beautiful and attractive for ones that can see it's beauty. If you are in search of an unusual jazz based audio trip, then this fellow can give your head a spin. It's a magical endeavor into a rarely acclaimed style: trip jazz. It's a fusion of break beats, cymbal riding paces accompanied by soft brass. You'll hear Billy Holiday whispers (Break in), more frantic beats and fake old style organ keyboards (1958), a heavy classic bass and powerful drums, (Flying officer), tripping James Brown like coolness (Hiperbole), a game of awkward sounding notes and vocals with subtle but deranging sax (Deep Breath), bongos and a rough ride cymbal (Split), second line drumming (Low, by the great Amalgamation of Soundz) and even has the funkiness of late 70s bad TV cop shows (Test Drive, Seaweed). The exploration can reach some dead ends if you are not used to multiple and quite complex breaks (Wooden Toy) but that's precisely the interest, and the courage of this group. The style is absolutely contemporary and will certainly appeal to the lovers of trip hop, DJ Cam, Bristol sound, but also to those seeking to refresh their references in jazz fusion and even simply classic jazz (late Coltrane). Skalpel are Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo DJs/producers from Wroclaw, Poland. Being new recruits of Ninja Foreign Legion, they are rather hesitant to speak about their past. Sufficient to say, they are talented DJs, whose 4 mixes were aired on Solid Steel in the past, two of which were released as "Virtual Cuts" - namely the best mixtape released in the history of electronic music in Poland. The year 2000 was a landmark for them, as they traveled the country with DJ Vadim and his Russian Percussion, presenting an amazing 4-deck show. Later that year they released demo CD-R titled "Polish Jazz", which not only received a lot of critical acclaim, but also led Skalpel to signing a contract with Ninja Tune. For the last two years they've been digging in the crates, trying to build the most exciting collection of samples from Polish Jazz records. Now they are slowly unleashing the music created from these sounds. Skalpel to wrocławski duet, tworzony przez kompozytorów i producentów: Marcina Cichego i Igora Pudło, współpracujących ze sobą od 1998 roku. W 2001 r. dzięki rewelacyjnemu demo Polish Jazz nawiązali współpracę z legendarną brytyjską wytwórnią Ninja Tune i pod jej szyldem wydali dwa świetnie przyjęte albumy.

Zespół jest znany z sięgania po polski jazz z lat 60. i 70. i konstruowania na jego bazie własnej autorskiej wizji współczesnej muzyki, łączącej to, co najlepsze w jazzie, hip hopie i muzyce klubowej. Przedsmak ich możliwości dała EP-ka "Sculpture" z 2003 roku. "Gazeta Wyborcza" wymieniła ją wśród pięciu najważniejszych płyt z nowym polskim jazzem. Rok później duet wydał swój debiutancki album Skalpel doceniony przez fanów i krytyków na całym świecie. Płyta "Skalpel" znalazła się w podsumowaniu Album Of The Year przygotowanym przez "DJ Magazine". Album został też nominowany do BBC - Gilles Peterson Worldwide Music Awards 2004.

Sukcesem był też drugi album Skalpela "Konfusion" (2005 r.), dzięki któremu duet został laureatem prestiżowych Paszportów Polityki. Płyty Skalpela znajdują się na wysokich miejscach w wielu rankingach najlepszych polskich albumów minionej dekady. ---cgm.pl

When SKALPEL was releasing their debut album on Ninja Tune in 2004, Poland was just accessing the European Union and NME described the music duo as an exotic oddity from a faraway land. After 10 years and with 2 nu-jazz classic albums under their belt („Skalpel“ and „Konfusion“) that put Poland on the electronic genre map. SKALPEL, well respected and recognized is back with a new release in yet again an important moment in history when the Polish Prime Minister becomes the new European Council President .

On their previews releases SKALPEL „resurrected the dusty and smoky spirit of 60s and 70s Polish Jazz and then re-imagined it for 21st century audiophiles”. The new album TRANSIT shows that the producers‘ imagination takes them much further beyond Polish inspirations creating a truly international blend. They do not limit themselves to Europe but also reach for music of American continents and take a journey across Asia. Eastern European melancholy intertwines with Mediterranean warmth.Transit is about transition – from one music genre to another, from sample-based music to programming and electronic production, from black and white to full colour spectrum, from dark to bright, form low-fi to hi-fi. Finally from Ninja Tune to their own imprint PlugAudio.

Transit is about communication: conquering literally borders between countries but also metaphorically between music styles the world over. It’s about communicating with fans through emotions, feeling and soul.

To describe the music one could use: ambient, swing, latin, cinematic, trip-hop, easy-listening, broken beat but the key word is really VIBES. In music instrument context, there are a lot of vibraphone parts on it but also in terms of ambience, there are plenty of good vibes.

Marcin and Igor still live in Poland, where SKALPEL has a cult status but a lot of their fans moved to the UK and other European countries and the social, political and cultural European environment in Europe has changed.

In Skalpel’s case, a lot has also changed, however, what was written about their first album remains: “Warm, crisp and complex without being complicated. A refreshing break with prevailing UK trendmongering and banwagoneering, Skalpel are just focusing on doing it right.”

Gdy nieco ponad dekadę temu Skalpel wydawał swoją debiutancką EP-kę Sculpture w legendarnym już wtedy Ninja Tune, polska muzyka alternatywna w zasadzie dopiero rozwijała skrzydła. W 2004 roku ukazał się pierwszy longplay Skalpela, ale i czerpiący garściami z jazzu, hiphopowy Kodex II duetu WhiteHouse czy pierwszy legalny album Kanału Audytywnego (też z Wrocławia). Kolejny rok to znów albumy wrocławskich zespołów, Kanału i Skalpela, ciekawy brzmieniowo był też A.E.I.O.U. Sistars.

Drugą połowę pierwszej dekady XXI wieku można nieśmiało nazwać suszą, jeśli chodzi o polską, nowoczesną brzmieniowo muzykę oscylującą wokół jazzu. Do głosu dochodzili prędzej „klasycy”, z Leszkiem Możdżerem czy Tomaszem Stańko na czele, kolejne jazzujące krążki nagrywał co najwyżej raper O.S.T.R.. W zasadzie dopiero solowy Breslau Igora Pudło vel Igora Boxxa wniósł nieco ożywienia do naszego rodzimego, muzycznego światka. Dwa lata później, przy okazji sesji nagraniowej do Dream Logic Boxxa oraz okazyjnego występu Skalpela na festiwalu Sacrum Profanum, pojawiła się pogłoska o reaktywacji zespołu, która wkrótce okazała się faktem.

Okazuje się, że dziś, w 2014 roku, Marcin Cichy i Igor Pudło wciąż mają sporo do powiedzenia. Zupełnie nowym rozdziałem dla duetu jest wydanie materiału własnym sumptem. Na dwóch poprzednich, wytłoczonych przez Ninja Tune albumach Skalpel samplował polski jazz lat ’60, ’70. Tym razem twórczość zespołu, choć wciąż utrzymana w stylistyce retro, odnosi się do różnych epok, ale i różnych kultur muzycznych.

Siesta, co sugeruje nazwa, otwiera ten album jakby od niechcenia. Nieco kojarzy mi się z przywołanym Możdżerem i jego albumami wydanymi z Larsem Danielssonem i Zoharem Fresco. Spore ożywienie wnosi kolejny Simple, który, tym razem wbrew tytułowi, rozwija się na kilku płaszczyznach. Swoją drogą, z tymi nazwami utworów jest pewien problem – gdy wsłuchiwałem się w album, nie zawsze odpowiadały one muzyce. Wracając do Simple – szkoda, że trwa tylko nieco ponad dwie minuty, bo wątków starczyłoby na rozbudowanie go do minut dwunastu. Kompozycja ma w sobie nerw, który skojarzył mi go z jazdą pociągiem. Nie bez przyczyny krążek zwie się Transit – wątek transportu, podróży, pojawia się jeszcze w kilku miejscach. Choćby w leniwym If Music Was That Easy, który przypomina mi o słynnym tramwaju wspinającym się po wąskich uliczkach Lizbony, którą odwiedziłem kilka la temu. W rejs gondolą po weneckich kanałach zabiera z kolei Snow. Z tytułowym śniegiem ma on niewiele wspólnego, bo słuchając tej kompozycji widzę oczyma wyobraźni pogodną, letnią noc. A to nie jedyna kompozycja, którą umieściłbym w basenie Morza Śródziemnego, podobnie jest z dwoma kolejnymi utworami. Saragossa to, jak sama nazwa wskazuje, flamenco i sangria. Alkohol uderza do głowy także i za sprawą bałkańskiej hulanki w Transit, który zadziornie kusi do tańca i żongluje nastrojami.

Wymienione dotąd kompozycje, włączając w to jeszcze niemal żywcem wyjęty z zadymionego klubu Switch, to jazz z krwi i kości. Syntetyczność muzyki jest w tych utworach ledwie wyczuwalna, w zasadzie można by było grać ten materiał na żywo akustycznie, co najwyżej z dodatkiem taśmy (co jest przecież zabiegiem często stosowanym w muzyce współczesnej). Obecnie Skalpel występuje ze wsparciem perkusisty, cóż więc stoi na przeszkodzie, by zaangażować kontrabas i inne „żywe” instrumenty? Tym bardziej, że Marcin Cichy potrafi grać na pianinie. Panowie, pomyślcie o tym! Dla kontrastu do tych jazzowych kawałków znajdują się na najnowszym albumie Skalpela także i propozycje bardziej elektroniczne. Pierwszym takim sygnałem jest Sound Garden, prawdziwy konglomerat dźwięków prosto z Afryki. W Sigmie amerykański swing mizdrzy się do bass music (wujek Shadow byłby dumny!), Sea wyraźnie puszcza oko do słynnej kołysanki Komedy, ale najbardziej ninjatune’owy jest Surround. To kolejny utwór z Transit, który kojarzy mi się z podróżą pociągiem.   Lekko skandynawski Sunset to ładny finał, płynący sobie niespiesznie aż do ostatnich dźwięków albumu. Trzeci album duetu to pozycja wysublimowana i wysmakowana, łącząca jazz i delikatną elektronikę w spójną całość. Za Skalpelem przemawiają argumenty czysto muzyczne – ich comeback nie jest obliczony na klasyczne dorobienie do emerytury, a najnowszy Transit nie jest powtórką z rozrywki. ---brandnewanthem.pl

Not too far into Skalpel , a radio voice quietly allows, "Let them play their jazz records, and dance all night if they want to." And that's as good an introduction as any to this jam-oriented collection, which draws its strength from two years of record-hunting by Wroclaw producers Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo. One might not imagine that Poland would have a rich jazz heritage, especially given the communist decrees against the destabilizing properties of the American art form. But here's evidence that it did indeed happen; that is, if you believe these two guys found this much music hidden in record bins.

I suppose listeners obsessed with Polish jazz could spend man-years identifying clips from Skalpel. That's their trip. Even though this is a hip-hop experience (seeing as how it samples the cuts and the artists made their name as DJs), it also draws substantively from the lessons of electronica. As a label, Ninja Tune has managed to simultaneously host an incredible variety of musicians, yet somehow most of the music shares common features of lush textures, jazzy rhythms, and unexpected use of bits and pieces of sound.

All of that can be found here. But don't go looking for jazz in the usual sense, because you'll be disappointed. These cuts may swing, and they may include some outstanding instrumental parts, but in the end this is a stitch job, plain and simple, start to finish. As such you have to judge it by how the pieces are put together, and quite honestly it's hard to imagine it done better, provided you aren't interested in changes, solos or group improvisation. The sound, while heavily produced and featuring obvious manifestations of electronics, still maintains an acoustic quality that grounds it and gives it substance.

"Pretend you can see everything happening in your mind," intones a male voice at the start of "Break In," which is about as subtle a statement as any about the psychedelic nature of Skalpel. Reverberant organ cascades over a bass theme, driven by live-sounding drumming that resides largely on the snare and cymbals. This jam makes for a trip that never interrupts, shocks, or otherwise causes trouble with your head. Igor Pudło wraz ze stanowiącym drugą połowę Skalpela Marcinem Cichym przekopali się w ciągu ostatnich dwóch lat przez góry płyt z polskim jazzem z lat 60 i 70.
