When the belgian girl sings her sad tunes in a subterranean jazz-club, late at night, she makes not only the stomach burn but also the heart. ---albumoftheyear.org

The fact that the Italian-Belgian Melanie De Biasio was awaiting a beautiful music career was already clear in her teens.

On her twelfth she toured as a flautist with the Ensemble de l’Harmonie de Charleroi and later became part of various rock and jazz formations. When her first solo album, A Stomach Is Burning, appeared in 2007, she received many praising reviews and countless comparisons with Billie Holiday.

Yet it is too blunt to call De Biasio simply a jazz singer. Thanks to the minimalist, electronic influences in her compositions, she manages to surprise every time. Not surprising: De Biasio finds nothing as important as spontaneity and improvisation. “Especially live, it can go in all directions”, she says in an interview with NRC Handelsblad. Expect the unexpected, we shall say. ---motelmozaique.nl

Classically trained flautist and vocalist Melanie de Biasio is often referred to as the Belgian Billie Holiday. She’s been described as one the most exciting artists in jazz by presenter Gilles Peterson. No Deal, her successful second album of 2014, was critically acclaimed, whilst her present Facebook page describes her immersive style of music as “space velvet silence purple echo under light”.

Blackened Cities, her new composition of twenty-five minutes, will be released on 20th May, 2016 through Play It Again Sam. It’s inspired by the raw, harsh and rugged post-industrial landscapes found in cities like Manchester, Detroit, Bilbao and her home city of Charleroi in Belgium. The album cover presents a black and white image of Charleroi by creative photographer Stephan Vanfleteren.

Melanie’s adventurous ensemble on this recording are Pascal Mohy (piano), Pascal Paulus (vintage synths), Sam Gerstmans (double bass), Dre Pallemaerts (drums) and Bart Vincent (vocals). She says of the recording: “I don’t think anyone, including me, was expecting a 25-minute piece which wasn’t a successor to No Deal, or anything other than a collection of new songs. I followed what the music told me, like a gut feeling”.

This is tender and emotional jazz with a feeling of hope, spontaneity and simmering orchestration. “Everything or almost everything was there in that collective moment on autumn afternoon…”, says Melanie recalling the recording session and her remarks ring true. There’s intimacy, sensuality and a sense of completion to her music. Nothing seems to be missing. Everything is there that needs to be. --- Anthony Weightman, aaamusic.co.uk

As Melanie De Biasio explains in her own words; “For me, Lilies has a darkness, but it’s also luminous. After my experiences with (previous releases) 'No Deal' and 'Blackened Cities', I just wanted to retreat to a cave with my Pro-Tools, my computer, and my cheap, 100Euro Shure SM-58 microphone. I could have gone to a big studio, made a big production – but I wanted none of that. I wanted to go back to the seed of creativity, the simplest materials. I was in this room where there was no light, no night or day at all, no heat. Very uncomfortable. But I felt free. I was happy to have this feeling – ‘I don’t need more, I have everything I need here.’”

Lilies resonates with beauty, multi-instrumentalist De Biasio casting a mesmerising shadow over the proceedings alongside her long-term ensemble of players and will undoubtedly once again see her further the acclaim of fans both in Europe and further afield. --- melaniedebiasio.bandcamp.com

One of the motivations behind remix albums is to push listeners back to the original release. In the case of Belgian/Italian singer Melanie de Biasio, her No Deal album was a real sleeper in 2014, with people slowly finding their own way to it, be it through word of mouth or on the back of fantastic live shows. For this album, de Biasio fan Gilles Peterson is the ringmaster who has commissioned producers and acts like the Cinematic Orchestra, Jonwayne, Chasol and others to repaint and redraw the originals. All are well considered and sprightly, though some are better judged than others, with Italian maestro Clap! Clap! and Cinematic Orchestra both marking up very different takes on I’m Gonna Leave You. The pick of the redos is probably Jonwayne’s beautifully embellished work on With All My Love. --- irishtimes.com

The mostly soothing, slightly baleful, ultimately seductive No Deal, the self-produced second album from songwriter, vocalist, and flutist Melanie De Biasio, reached number five on the Ultratop album chart in the artist's native Belgium and gradually charmed DJs and publications in other territories. Released weeks after she performed at BBC DJ Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards ceremony and collected a trophy at the European Border Breakers Awards, this is a rare remix album that can be enjoyed from beginning to end, as an alternative version rather than as a clashing assortment of remixes. Arranged by Peterson, who called upon some of his favorite contemporary musicians and producers, No Deal Remixed presents all of the album's songs in new form, identically sequenced, though Cinematic Orchestra's weighty version of "I'm Gonna Leave You" -- different from Clap! Clap!'s lighter, busier work earlier in the program -- functions like a bonus track. Peterson and Simbad's fusion of "With Love" and "Sweet Darling Pain" is central, the most dramatic and radical rework. Its tremulous juke patterns gradually intensify and fill the original's space and pensiveness with nervous anxiety. Another striking remix comes from Eels (Mark Oliver Everett), who possibly took the first line of "I Feel You" -- "I feel you/A deep echo in me" -- as something of a cue. He makes the album opener sound decades old. Through its squally strings, one can envision a rapid playback of scenes from a past romance. Japanese Blue Note act Hex's stuttering/driving revamp of "The Flow" places greater emphasis on De Biasio's flute, while Seven Davis Jr.'s contribution with "No Deal" is a lean house track that treats her voice like a sample source. ---Andy Kellman, Rovi
