Baden Powell was a legendary Brazilian guitarist whom many consider the best of all time. A prodigy at the age of six, classically trained, his powerful sound and personality are unique and instantly recognizable. Unlike the velvety Joao Gilberto, who rode the bossa nova wave, and Tom Jobim, whose guitar technique was just enough to sketch his beautiful songs, there's no hint of pop in Powell. In fact, he left for Brazil for Paris just when the bossa wave was cresting, in 1963, and remained there for the rest of his life. His first recording in France made him a star; he made over fifty more and remains an inspiration.

This is a compilation from those early years, together with performances recorded a decade later. Disc one begins with one of his best-known compositions, "Berimbau," written with Vinicius de Moraes, a memorably haunting melody which has been covered by artists as far-ranging as Kenny Rankin. De Moraes also co-wrote the second track, "Girl from Ipanema," which is renewed here in Powell's hands, losing all of its familiar elevator-music quality. More of his compositons follow, as well as some by other Brazilian masters: Dorival Caymi, Pixiguinha and Aryosso, and a piece by Bach. It's a fascinating, dynamic mix, including tracks where Powell sings, is backed by an orchestra or traditional percussion, and plays solo or with a trio.

Disc two opens with "Xango," an "Afro-samba" that sounds like a soundtrack from a '70s Fellini movie. It's another powerful, intense collection, including Powell's stunning solo rendition of "Round Midnight."

This package is recommended for anyone who loves Brazilian music and masterful guitar. It's a fine sampler that beautifully demonstrates what the fuss over Powell is all about. (And by the way, his full name was Baden Powell de Aquino—he was named after the founder of the Boy Scouts. He died in 2000 at the age of 63, reportedly destroyed by alcohol.) ---Dr. Judith Schlessinger, allaboutjazz.com

Vinicius de Moraes was the principal lyricist of Bossa Nova, ('Girl from Ipanema', 'Chega de Saudade' and 'Insensatez' are amongst the famous international hit songs he wrote with Tom Jobim), and Os Afro-Sambas is his response to the commercialization of the movement in the mid '60s. Co-written with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and eventually released in 1966, these eight songs combine Powell's melodic gifts with Bahian Folk traditions and Gregorian chant. With the joyous vocalizations of Quarteto Em Cy, the atmosphere is at once haunting and spontaneous. The music hasn't even begun to date. Recorded at a time when musicians around the world were looking to break down barriers - between Classical and Pop, East and West - but the Afro-Sambas appear to recognize no such barriers in the first place. ---cduniverse.com

Baden Powell’s Bossa Nova Guitarra Jubileu is full of marvelous Brazilian rhythms. Whether strumming quickly or delicately picking, Baden is aptly able to emote. Listening to the album, I recognized a significant number of melodies. The familiarity is a nice thing when listening to a relatively unknown genre. Plus, Baden’s guitar playing produces amazingly fresh, beautiful music, removing any fears of repetitive dullness. I hadn’t actually listened to this full record before today, but am currently blown away by it. It has the perfect vibe for got to get over the humpday, which is sunny and bright, although a little nippy, here in Seattle. Huzzah for sunshine and hurray for Brazilian guitar!

“Samba Triste” has some classical sounding guitar passages at times. “Garota de Ipanema” is one song that is easily recognizable, but Powell’s up-tempo take on it ensures it isn’t tiring. There aren’t too many grooves more laid back, but still vital, than well-executed samba. ---henpantha.wordpress.com

Rightly hailed as one of the finest acoustic guitarists in the Americas, the late Baden Powell remains a Brazilian icon, one who influenced jazz and was influenced by jazz. LEMBRANCAS is the last album he completed before his passing in 2000--Powell pays tribute to the spectrum of sounds in Brazil by performing the works of Brazilian composers. If you love acoustic guitar playing, you must hear this fellow.

Final album recorded in May 2000 by this great guitarist/composer and released after his untimely death at the end of the year. Powell handpicked great Brazilian standards for this session, such as 'Pastorinhas' (Noel Rosa), 'Inquietacao' (Ary Barroso), 'Dora' (Dorival Caymmi) and his own classic, 'O Astronauta', co-written with supreme poet Vinicius de Moraes. A great swan song for all Brazilian music fans and a great addition to this legendary artist's discography. ---cduniverse.com

This compilation of recordings by Baden Powell doesn't specify exactly when they were made, though the guitarist is heard primarily as a solo artist, sometimes with added percussion or strings. In any case, the Brazilian master of bossa nova is in great form throughout this collection, with a lyrical, generally understated approach to his instrument. Among the highlights are the brisk "Consolação," "Apelo," and some of the many songs composed with lyricist Vinícius de Moraes. A flutist and a percussionist (both unidentified) join him for a live performance of "Carinhoso," along with the international hit "Garota de Ipanema" (better known as "The Girl from Ipanema"). For anyone desiring a good survey of his recordings, this anthology will be a good investment -- if it can be located, as it is no longer in print. ---Ken Dryden, allmusic.com
