Originally released in 2002 in Europe and Japan, Upojenie (Ecstasy) is a collaboration between Pat Metheny and superstar Polish vocalist Anna Maria Jopek. It came into being after Jopek approached the guitarist at a jazz festival in Warsaw in 2001. Her original idea was to perform some of her own work, some of Metheny's, and some Polish folk songs (exactly what happened). The collaboration was recorded over four months in Poland; it is something wholly other than the sum of its parts might suggest. Co-produced by composer Marcin Kydrynski (Jopek's husband) and Metheny, with Jopek and Pawel Bzim Zarecki, this set marries together the guitarist's signature meld of jazz, pop, and American forms with electronics, early folk melodies, classical melodies, and arrangements with exotic instrumentation and Jopek's otherworldly but gentle voice. For Metheny fans, this is a unique opportunity on two fronts: to hear new versions of his own tunes with different arrangements, titles, and lyrics, as well as the opportunity to be introduced to an immense talent. Now that the set has been released stateside, it becomes an opportunity for fans of contemporary jazz and sophisticated adult pop as well. The set commences with the duet "Cicy Zapada Zmrok" (Here Comes the Silent Dusk), a traditional evening prayer sung by Jopek with Metheny on the 42-string Pikasso guitar. It's skeletal, ethereal, and haunting, yet in Metheny's hands, the melody transcends its origin and becomes a song that could have been sung on the North American plains as well as in Eastern Europe. Another duet, "Biel" (Whiteness), written by Kydrynski, features the singer buoyed by Metheny's classical and baritone guitars. It feels spacious enough to have been recorded in a church, but its roots are in samba.

These tracks are the anomalies on the album, however. More often Metheny and Jopek are accompanied by a full band mainly comprised of crack Polish session players, including the great pianist Leszek Mozdzer. Check the version of Metheny's "High Tide, Love Tide, the Breath of Time...," titled "Przyplyw, Odplyw, Oddech Czasu..." (Tell Her You Saw Me) here, with lyrics by Magda Czapinska. The nearly whispered, restrained multi-tracked vocals, a soprano guitar, and lithe basslines, acoustic piano, loops, timpani, and percussion create a web of gossamer and ether before the tempo changes and all sounds seem to bleed into one warm blanket of sound with the considerable emotions in this music all on display. "Are You Going with Me," the original single from this set, is an instrumental with wordless vocals that evolves from the arrangement found on Offramp into something far more folkish and mysterious. Jopek's own "Czarne Slowa" (Black Words) is a deeply sad, piano-driven love song, a ballad with somber overtones hinting at an intricate folk-jazz hymn. The nostalgic "By On Byl Tu" ("Let It Stay" from the Pat Metheny Group's Travels) becomes a hymn of longing and homecoming with the guitarist's classical guitar kissed by Mozdzer's piano, upright bass, and drums. But in Jopek's round, warm, seemingly ageless vocal, this song is almost a lullaby, with gorgeous interplay between the instruments. The domestic issue of this set contains two bonus cuts including a live number. Metheny fans who couldn't afford the import should jump on this, and those who have an interest in sophisticated pop singers from Stacey Kent to Inara George should consider this as well. Upojenie is international jazz as poetry in motion. ---Thom Jurek, Rovi

Music from the serene fields of Poland. But the same time wild and daring. Carefully arranged for ancient instruments or string orchestra, yet at the same time furiously improvised on prepared piano and a whole bunch of truly jazzy instruments. Possibly one of the most unique recordings you will ever have a chance to experience. With the passionate, Slavic touch of nostalgia. With the pure sound of acoustic instruments. With the cast of the best musicians ever chosen from Central Europe, including ECM recording artist Tomasz Stańko. Rarely before and probably unlikely in the future will you find the music so delicate and deeply touching. Never before have you heard a vocal record so unpredictable that keeps you alert and surprised the last bars. ---annamariajopek.pl

Anna Maria Jopek: Born December 14, 1970, vocalist Anna Maria Jopek is a native of Poland, and grew up listening to her native folk music. She studied classical piano at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, and briefly participated in jazz studies at the Manhattan School of Music. She was a contestant in the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, and is a recipient of the Michel Legrand Award. Her nearly dozen recordings have reached gold and platinum status in Europe. She prefers not to be pegged as strictly a jazz singer, though the influence of Keith Jarrett is quite prevalent in her music. Borrowing from pop music, Polish folk forms, and other ethnic sources, Jopek synthesizes a whirlwind of sound from various contemporary music sources, similar to her acclaimed Polish peer, Grazyna Auguscik. She played Carnegie Hall in January 2004. Collaborators over the years have included Tomasz Stanko, Pat Metheny, Richard Bona, Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Dhafer Youssef, Gordon Haskell, Mino Cinelu, and Manu Katche. ---Michael G. "Po pracy z Methenym musiałam kolejną płytą pójść w całkiem innym kierunku, wybrałam koncert. W przeciwnym wypadku nawet sama przed sobą nie uniknęłabym porównań z "Upojeniem". Poza tym - ostatnie półtora roku spędziliśmy z Marcinem w studiach nagraniowych I najbliższy rok wyglądać będzie podobnie. Chcieliśmy się więc trochę przewietrzyć..." Zamiast składanki w stylu "Best of..." Anna Maria Jopek przynosi nowe wersje swoich znanych tematów, które zyskują nerw, nadzwyczajne napięcie i nową jakość w spotkaniu z publicznością.

"Farat jest formą podziękowania dla wszystkich cudownych publiczności całej Polski, które były z nami przez te wszystkie lata - mówi Anna Maria Jopek. Jednocześnie wiem, że nigdy wcześniej nie miałam tak szalonego, odważnego zespołu jak w tym chłodnym, deszczowym, minionym maju... Gramy ze sobą już tak długo ale wiosną 2003 nasze porozumienie osiągnęło apogeum i chyba właśnie wówczas trzeba było to zarejestrować".

Anna Maria Jopek is as Polish as one can be – not only with her gentle beauty, but first of all with her music, coming straight from the heart. Yet her latest project features a bunch of true giants from around the world. The Brazilian bossa nova genius Oscar Castro Neves meets serene ECM recording pianist from Norway Tord Gustavsen. An exotic voice of Tunesian oud virtuoso and vocalist Dhafer Youssef blends with brave and adventurous notes of Branford Marsalis’ soprano saxophone. Richard Bona’s trademak Douala vocals and bass lines coexist with sensual French singing by percussion wizard Mino Cinelu. Manu Katche and Christian Mc Bride provide powerful grooves… yet then there is this amazing, sophisticated vocal (in fact – about a zillion of them so carefully layered!) by Anna Maria that makes it all work. That makes this dialogue of such different cultures not only possible, but fascinating to observe. That makes this music unique, one of the kind. Personal.

‘All these people have been my inspiration for the last decade – Anna Maria says humbly. It’s an amazing experience to have finally met them, to exchange energies and ideas, to learn from them and – hopefully – to create some original music with them in mind. I am Polish. I come from the vast meadows of central Poland, I’ve been brought up with its musical traditions, but it does not make my ID complete. Especially now, with the world getting so much smaller every single day. I truly believe that the new music might emerge from coexistance of so many so different voices, influences, traditions, religions. By far – this is the most important work I’ve ever done.’

In Poland ID went platinum in just two weeks. The triumphant tour, featuring Dhafer Youssef, Mino Cinelu and Richard Bona followed with sold out venues and standing ovations. Parts of these events will eventually turn into a one great live album in the fall of 2008. It was not, however, her first experience with the world-class masters and musical heroes. She’s been known for probably the most influential and groundbreaking project in Polish popular music. ---annamariajopek.pl

After the success of ID album, which in two weeks became the Platinum Record, was released in many countries in the world and up to now has been sold in 50.000 copies, Anna Maria Jopek is ready for a new challenge. It is brave, sometimes radical concert album, recorded with world-famous guests. New album, which had its premiere in Poland on 17 October 2008 and includes almost 80 minutes of music! BMW Jazz Club VOLUME 1 - is another, after two wonderful concerts and cooperation during last year's tour, artistic venture of AMJ, Marcin Kydryński and BMW Poland company. At the same time it is the first album from the collection, which is still being prepared within this project. --- anna-maria-jopek.com/en

Anna Maria Jopek is an artist that may not be known to many, but thanks to Pat Metheny and his contribution to Anna Maria's album Upojenie, I've come to know and love her music.

"Secret" is a wonderful album to the novice Anna Maria Jopek fan. Most, if not all songs are sung in English, she does several covers on this album such as "Cherry Tree", "Thousand Years" and "Moondance". Certainly this album has led me to purchase other's of her's sung in her native Polish. I have to say the nature of the language makes no difference, Anna Maria is fabulous in Polish, even though I don't understand a word she's singing, her emotions shine through regardless.

To są take nasze wewnętrzne pamiątki, w nakładzie 250 egzemplarzy. Trafiają do radiostacji i do dziennikarzy, kilka trafia na nasze aukcje charytatywne. I – co zarazem ogromnie schlebiające i bezgranicznie irytujące, ludzie którzy dostają te płytki, wyraźnie opisane jako NOT FOR SALE, wystawiają je skutecznie na swoich prywatnych aukcjach czasami nawet za kilkaset złotych, licząc na desperację kolekcjonerów. Postanowiliśmy choć ten jeden raz im to utrudnić…“

„To właściwie pół płyty!“ żartuje AMJ.

Powracają zatem największe postaci współczesnej muzyki jazzowej i okołojazzowej: Richard Bona, Christian McBride, Tord Gustavsen, Dhafer Youssef, Manu Katche, Mino Cinelu i wiele innych. Powracają we wcieleniach, jakich jeszcze nie słyszeliśmy.

„Maksisingiel Skłamałabym to taki miły drobiazg – mówi AMJ – którym chcieliśmy podsumować rok poświęcony projektowi ID.
