But the music on their first collaboration together, I Advance Masked, stresses guitar textures and moods over indulgent soloing. Although the recording sessions weren't entirely enjoyable for Summers (who was experiencing marital problems at the time), some very beautiful music can be found on the resulting album. The music for the track "Girl on a Swing" does an excellent job of conveying the song's title in one's mind, and the duo's guitars weave wonderful polyrhythmic guitar lines throughout "China -- Yellow Leader." "The Truth of Skies" is an atmospheric piece, created by a wash of keyboard sounds and guitar dissonance, while "New Marimba" would have sounded right at home on an early-'80s King Crimson album. I Advance Masked has a dreamlike quality to it, and is definitely not typical rock music. It's highly recommended to fans of these two great and original guitarists. ---Greg Prato, AllMusic Review

It is always a rare treat when gifted artists come together for a project, and this collaboration between two of rocks' most influential guitarists fulfills that promise and creates just the right blend of rhythmic mastery with atmospheric minimalism. Robert Fripp and Andy Summers guise the music in neutral colors and subdued garb without losing intensity on 'I Advance Masked', a true partnership wherein both players contributed equally, each only adding something to a moment of music if necessary. The result is an unselfish record of constant forward movement and sonic wonders, especially for 1982.

The driving title track sets the pace and we're off on a special trip. 'In the Cloud Forest' slows things with warbles, quavers, the chimes of Summers and piercing round notes of Fripp. Though vaguely reminiscent of both 1980s King Crimson and the Police, 'I Advance Masked' is an animal all its own, never imitating or taking from the two men's other bands. 'New Marimba' pulses and 'Girl on a Swing' is a nice respite with gentle chord washes and a beautiful solo from Fripp. 'Hardy Country' refreshes the tempo and the adventures in modulation that are such a part of this session. 'The Truth of Skies' moves into darker realms, 'Painting and Dance' teases with mathematic counterpoint and 'Still Point' thrills with an urgent rhythm and great lead.

A challenging record from start to finish, it can be both carefully listened to or relegated to 'background' music and still satisfy both needs. Very pleasing and a great stater for 'texture-rock'. ---Atavachron, progarchives.com

download (mp3 @192 kbs):

yandex 4shared mega mediafire uloz.to cloudmailru gett

back

Andy Summers & Robert Fripp - I Advance Masked (1982)

<img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Jazz/AndySummers/masked.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. The album was originally going to be a more musically varied affair -- at the time, Summers talked about recording calypso and Tex-Mex/Ry Cooder-like tunes with Fripp, but they never saw the light of day. Like its predecessor, it contains plenty of great guitar work, with songwriting being stressed over instrumental virtuosity. For example, Summers and Fripp know how to subtly insert challenging sections into their songs (such as the 7/4 time signature in "Maquillage"), without making them seem like an obvious attempt to impress fellow musicians. Although '80s-sounding electronic drums are primarily used for backbeats (such as the track "Train"), it doesn't take away from the album's charm. Whereas their last album featured a few compositions that were quite King Crimson-like, their sophomore effort contains a few that sound like Police instrumentals (the title track). His output of solo albums saw him span the genres and he also embarked on exciting collaborations with other artists.

Summers work with fellow guitar virtuoso Victor Biglione has been especially fruitful. Their critically acclaimed debut album Strings Of Desire led to their second CD. Splendid Brazil recorded in 2005. Once again, the pair perform duets on acoustic guitars with no other instrumental accompaniment. Yet such is their empathy, they can provide all the melodic and rhythmic structures needed to produce entirely satisfying music.

They concentrated on familiar standards for their first album, but ‘Splendid Brazil’ celebrates the kind of material more familiar to Victor Biglione, one of South America’s foremost musicians. Andy Summers comes from a rock background, while Victor is steeped in Latin rhythms - yet the two musicians complement each in a stylistic meeting of hearts and minds. The sparkling interplay on Campina Grande, for example, is a splendid example of their unique telepathy.

Splendid Brazil is a rare gem of an album. --- guitarcds.net

download: uploaded yandex 4shared mediafire solidfiles mega zalivalka filecloudio anonfiles oboom

back
Andy Summers - Peggy's Blue Skylight (2000) 2009-10-15T17:13:42Z 2009-10-15T17:13:42Z http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/en/jazz/401-andysummers/716-blueskylight.html bluesever administration@theblues-thatjazz.com
Andy Summers - Peggy's Blue Skylight (2000)

01 - Boogie Stop Shuffle 02 - Tonight At Noon 03 - Reincarnation Of A Lovebird 04 - Opus Three 05 - Cumbia Jazz Fusion 06 - Remember Rockefeller At Attica 07 - Peggy's Blue Skylight 08 - Weird Nightmare 09 - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - Where Can A Man Find Peace! If you haven't followed his post-Police career, you might be somewhat surprised at his jazz leanings. Texturally, he flirts with smooth jazz at times, but his penchant for dissonance keeps him out of that camp. There are a handful of original compositions alongside pieces by Monk, Mingus, and Wayne Shorter. Q-Tip's reading from Mingus' Beneath the Underdog on "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" does little to add to the tune, beyond differentiating it from Jeff Beck's version, but the way Summers handles Mingus' "Boogie Stop Shuffle" with an added horn section is great. Similarly, Sting's turn on vocals on the overdone "'Round Midnight" is serviceable, but the way Summers digs into Monk's bag of dissonance and crazy intervals on "Think of One" shows a deep understanding and feel for Monk's music. The Wayne Shorter tunes are beautifully done, and the album opens and closes with Summers in jazz power-trio mode, rocking things up just a bit (even quoting "White Room" in "Big Thing"). Born Andrew James Somers in Poulton-Fylde, Lancashire, England, on December 31, 1942, the young Somers (who later changed his surname to the more easily spelled Summers) moved to Bournemouth as a child and, upon taking up the guitar at 14, immersed himself in the local jazz scene. By 16, he was playing in local clubs and coffeehouses, where he was noticed by Zoot Money. Somers was invited to join Money's Big Roll Band, with whom he appeared on the live album The All Happening Zoot Money's Big Roll Band at Klook's Kleek. Money eventually changed the band into a psychedelic outfit called Dantalian's Chariot, and when that project dissolved in early 1968, Somers briefly signed on with the Soft Machine before rejoining Money in a revamped Animals lineup for the LP Love Is. When that imploded in 1969, Somers studied classical guitar and composition at UCLA for four years, in the meantime giving guitar lessons, gigging with a local Latin-rock band, and acting with various theater troupes. Upon his return to England in 1973, Summers became something of a journeyman, touring in the backing bands of Neil Sedaka, Kevin Coyne, Kevin Ayers, and David Essex.

Summers met Sting and Stewart Copeland in 1977 while playing with a band called Strontium 90. The two asked Summers to join their full-time project, the Police; together, the trio gradually developed a style centered around jazz- and reggae-influenced pop/rock, and Sting's strong bass lines allowed Summers to supply subtle sonic textures and colors on his guitar, and to experiment with various effects. Summers first stepped out on his own in 1982, teaming with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp on the jazz- and Eastern-tinged I Advance Masked. It was followed in 1984 with Bewitched, another Summers/Fripp collaboration, around the same time the Police officially disbanded.

Eager to establish himself in musical realms outside of rock & roll, Summers did a bit of movie soundtrack work (Down and Out in Beverly Hills, 2010, etc.) before returning to recording, this time on his own. His first solo effort, 1987's harmonically intricate yet pop-oriented XYZ, met with poor critical response. Its follow-up, 1988's Mysterious Barricades, was more successful, emphasizing Summers' textural sensibilities on its jazzy, new age-influenced compositions. A string of albums in this style followed through the '90s, notably The Golden Wire (1989), Charming Snakes (1991), World Gone Strange (1991), Invisible Thread (1993), and The Last Dance of Mr. X (1997). For 1998's Strings of Desire, he teamed with South American guitar virtuoso Victor Biglione; 1999's Green Chimneys: Music of Thelonious Monk found Summers working with a larger ensemble than usual for him, as well as his first collaboration with Sting since the Police (on a version of "'Round Midnight"). Following the success of his Monk-themed album, the guitarist put together an album of interpretations of compositions by Charles Mingus called Peggy's Blue Skylight, released in late 2000. Earth + Sky appeared four years later. Summers continued to record thereafter, releasing First You Build a Cloud in 2007.

He also participated in the Police reunion tour that same year. --- Steve Huey, Rovi

download: uploaded yandex 4shared mediafire solidfiles mega zalivalka filecloudio anonfiles oboom

back
