The music on this 1997 two-CD import set has been reissued many times, but this is the most complete version yet. Cornetist King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in 1923 was not only the finest jazz group on record, but the most exciting unit up to that point in time. Although it featured some short solos from the octet (particularly Oliver, 22-year old cornetist Louis Armstrong, trombonist Honore Dutrey, and the great clarinetist Johnny Dodds), the emphasis was on the ensembles. All 37 of the band's recordings are on this two-fer (including such classics as the two versions of "Dippermouth Blues," "Froggie Moore," the two renditions of "Snake Rag," "High Society," "Sobbin' Blues," "Chattanooga Stomp," "Buddy's Habits," and three versions of "Mabel's Dream"). In addition, Oliver is heard in 1924 backing the vaudeville team of Butterbeans & Susie and taking two duets with Jelly Roll Morton (including "King Porter Stomp"). This classic New Orleans music is essential for any comprehensive jazz collection. ---Scott Yanow, Rovi

Recorded 1923

This superlative set allows us the pleasure of actually hearing Jazz take its early steps;while not to fault Louis Armstrong's own greatness That came later on not in 1923;King Oliver has been one of the most criminally neglected artists in jazz history, and this marvelous release will no doubt force the jazz writers to reconsider,-whether 'Zulu's Ball' or 'High Society Rag',Oliver's capacity for collective improvisation drove these wonderful records. And now with the wonder of CD Technology,we can preserve Oliver's artistry in the new millenium,...so let us not make the mistake of ignoring Oliver like we did last century! Oliver is HERE so deal with it,skeptics and jazz lovers - REJOICE! --- Peter Acebal, amazon.com

Louis Armstrong once remarked, "Had it not been for Joe Oliver, jazz would not be what it is today." As these recordings attest, he was the greatest bandleader of his day, able to bring his groups to a perfect balance of the tight and the loose, to control and compose diverse elements into a successful whole. He may have been the greatest talent scout too, giving not just Armstrong but a host of other fine New Orleans musicians their first exposure. What is sometimes overlooked is his sheer greatness as a trumpeter, both for the brightness and grandeur of his open horn and for his innovative and masterful use of mutes and buckets to find other voices for the instrument. In that sense he fathered two quite different lines of jazz trumpeters, lines that persist today. This CD completes the documentation of the superb 1923 band with Armstrong and the Dodds brothers, begun on Jazz Chronological Classics' 1923, and begins the documentation of his 1926 Chicago recordings. Oliver was also a great blues player, and there's ample evidence of that here, from the stately "Riverside Blues" of 1923 to the witty muted play of "Jackass Blues" and "Wa Wa Wa," both from 1926. --Stuart Broomer, amazon.com
