Earl Klugh's pretty guitar sound is well featured on eight selections (seven of his originals plus Burt Bacharach's "Message to Michael"), most of which can be considered high-quality background music. The personnel and instrumentation changes from track to track (keyboardists Daryl Dybka and Greg Phillinganes and electric bassist Marcus Miller make appearances), but the lightweight sounds are pretty consistent throughout this quickly forgotten LP. ---Scott Yanow, Rovi

This is the perfect setting for acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh, playing strong melodies (including such standards as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Laura," "Mona Lisa," and "Two for the Road") while joined by strings and several horns in an orchestra arranged and conducted by David Matthews. As usual for a Klugh session, the guitarist sticks mostly to the themes and does not improvise much, as he never considered himself a jazz player; but the overall effect is quite pleasing. --- Scott Yanow, Rovi

Even on this fairly early LP, acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh already had his distinctive sound down, along with his familiar approach to playing lightly funky poppish material. Klugh's tone was always very pretty, and he sounds fine on such tunes as "Magic in Your Eyes," "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," and "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues," which has a guest appearance by one of his main influences, guitarist Chet Atkins. On most selections, keyboardist Gregory Phillinganes is a key force in the backup band. Unfortunately, Klugh has not developed much from this promising start, and the overall music is a bit superficial, although pleasantly melodic. ---Scott Yanow, AllMusic Review

Seven-time Grammy nominee and Grammy Award winner Earl Klugh presents a collection of finely-crafted, highly listenable compositions on THE JOURNEY. With his characteristic warm, nylon-string sound, Klugh improvises fluently throughout this recording. He lays down subtly phrased, highly melodic solos over a variety of smooth grooves which range in flavor from easy, open sambas to relaxed, R&B-tinged ballads.
