Polish saxophonist / composer / bandleader Janusz Muniak was one of the most important Polish Jazz figures during the early post WWII period, which flourished in the 1960s / 1970s. He was part of the emerging revolutionary movement of Polish Jazz, where he played along such legendary pioneers as Andrzej Trzaskowski, Krzysztof Komeda and Tomasz Stanko. Since the late 1970s Muniak leads his own groups and records as a leader. This is his second album as a leader and since then he continued to record a plethora of albums over the years, both as a leader and sideman. He also owns his own Jazz club in Krakow, called "U Muniaka", which is one of the oldest continuously active Jazz venues in the country.

This album presents Muniak in a quartet setting, with pianist Wojciech Puszek (playing the Fender Rhodes electric piano), bassist Andrzej Cudzich and drummer Krzysztof Zawadzki. They perform four lengthy originals, all by Muniak, which allow for extended improvisations, mostly by the leader. The presence of the electric piano sets the overall ambience of this recording, pushing it slightly towards Jazz-Rock Fusion, but the leader keeps the situation in check and well within the modern mainstream bounds. Muniak's performances on both the soprano and tenor saxophones are first rate as are those by the rhythm section, creating together some excellent, but not very innovative modern Jazz, which most Jazz listeners should enjoy. ---Adam Baruch, polish-jazz.blogspot.com

Janusz Muniak (3.05.1941 - 31.01.2016) - one of the most colorful figures of Polish jazz. Graduated from high school in Cracow, he made his musical debuted in 1960 with Lublin band of Witold Miszczak. The team has proven to be a good school of jazz playing, after which Muniak was spotted and asked to join Tomasz Stanko + Jazz Darings. Concerts of the band did not prevent Muniak from cooperation with Krzysztof Komeda, bands of Jana Ptaszyny Wroblewskiego (Studio Jazz LP, SPPT Chałturnik) and the quartet of Jan Jarczyk. Only after a few years, as a fully formed musician, Janusz Muniak decided to lead his own bands.

Janusz Muniak is one of the forefathers of modern Polish Jazz. His legacy includes the membership in such legendary Polish ensembles as those led by Andrzej Trzaskowski, Krzysztof Komeda and Tomasz Stanko as well as leading his own groups. He is accompanied here by his quintet, which includes pianist Pawel Perlinski, guitarist Marek Blizinski, bassist Andrzej Dechnik and drummer Jerzy Bezucha, all excellent players themselves. Muniak has a completely unique, natural style of improvisation, which is passionate and highly expressive, putting him somewhat aside in a class of his own besides the other distinguished Polish saxophonists, like Zbigniew Namyslowski for example. Janusz Muniak, jeden z najwybitniejszych muzyków polskiego jazzu, saksofonista tenorowy i sopranowy, kompozytor, aranżer, lider. Zadebiutował w 1960 r.; trzy lata później został członkiem grupy Jazz Darings Tomasza Stańki. W latach1964–1967 grał w Kwintecie i Sekstecie Andrzeja Trzaskowskiego, z którym wystąpił na Jazz Jamboree i nagrał dwa znaczące albumy. Współpracował też z Krzysztofem Komedą. Wkrótce ponownie związał się z Tomaszem Stańką – z jego Kwintetem odbył liczne tournée po Polsce i Europie i nagrał kilka nowatorskich albumów, m.in. Music for K. (poświęcony Komedzie), Jazz Message from Polen, Purple Sun. W latach 70. grał z Janem Ptaszynem Wróblewskim w orkiestrze Studio Jazzowe Polskiego Radia i SPTT Chałturnik oraz w Kwartecie Jana Jarczyka. Od połowy lat 70. prowadzi własne zespoły, w których grali m.in. Jerzy Bezucha, Marek Bliziński, Jarek Śmietana, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Leszek Możdżer, Włodek Pawlik. Nagrał kilka autorskich płyt doskonale przyjętych przez publiczność i krytyków, m.in. Question Mark, Placebo, Just Friends, Annie. Na scenie spotkał się z największymi gwiazdami światowego jazzu: Donem Cherrym, Freddiem Hubbardem, Hankiem Mobleyem, Hankiem Jonesem. Od 1992 r. prowadzi w Krakowie Jazz Club U Muniaka, gdzie występuje z młodymi muzykami. Na początku kariery był postrzegany jako przedstawiciel awangardy – Joachim Ernst Berendt uznał go za pierwszego muzyka w Europie grającego free jazz. W późniejszym okresie jego styl przybliżył się do mainstreamu, a repertuar artysty wypełniały jego własne kompozycje i standardy. This is the third album as a leader by the veteran Polish Jazz saxophonist / composer Janusz Muniak, recorded live with his quartet, which also included pianist Wojciech Puszek, bassist Zbigniew Wegehaupt and American drummer George Buckner. They play only four compositions, one of which is an original by Muniak, another is by the Godfather of Polish Jazz, Krzysztof Komeda (the title track) and the remaining two are standards.

Although well played the album offers no innovation whatsoever and is simply one more Be Bop set, which is quite forgettable. The leader plays some mighty solos, which are, as always in his case, quite incredible and virtuosic, but the overall effect remains pretty unremarkable.

The album also suffers from a pretty amateurish sound quality, which often victimized live Polish Jazz recordings, with mobile recording equipment in the Socialist country being sadly sub-standard. Nevertheless it is a document both of the times and of Muniak's legacy, and therefore definitely worth listening and enjoying his bravado performances.

Side Note: The Poljazz label, which originally released this album, was active for 20 years (between 1972 and 1991) and was owned by the Polish Jazz Society. Considering the fact that the music industry in the Socialist State was centralized and totally controlled, with just one State owned music company producing all the albums, the possibilities to record and release Jazz albums were extremely limited. Poljazz was conceived and founded in order to allow for many more Jazz (and other) albums to be released independently from the State owned Polskie Nagrania / Muza and as such revolutionized the music industry at the time, being the only such enterprise in Eastern Europe. One of the lesser-known players of the Polish jazz scene of the 70s -- but a heck of a great saxophonist who stretches out nicely here in post-Coltrane freedom, but also manages to groove a bit too! The session has Janusz Muniak on both tenor and soprano sax -- working with a quintet in styles that range from open and almost free, to more inside and tightly grooving, with a sweeter electric feel. Instrumentation in the group includes electric piano, guitar, bass, and drums -- and the feel here is almost like some of the directions the Impulse Records scene of the 70s took their Coltrane inspiration when they electrified the rhythms, and tightened things up a bit.

Some recordings just don't inspire to set jazz world on fire and take you into an unexplored regions. Well, one might say, that they don't contribute anything new to jazz history. So, why was it was recorded at all? For whom? Frankly speaking I ask myself this question each time I put newest Janusz Muniak's CD "For Annie" on. And every time the answer is the same: this music is for me. If I listen to this music with pleasure, if it frequently visits my home, it means that there is something in it, something just for me. And I reckon that there might be quite many people like me. Janusz Muniak has already set the jazz world in fire several times and gone through the period of very modern and innovative playing. By now, just like another jazz innovator Archie Shepp, he has given up traveling into free jazz world and for some time he has been presenting straight-ahead jazz which doesn't attempt any innovations. But it isn't only innovations that jazz lives on. Otherwise the contemporary recordings of traditional jazz wouldn't make any sense at all. And since they still find listeners, so they do! There is something in this music that makes it to belong to the achievements of this fossilized world of mainstream, which are, if not perfect, at least outstanding ones. The compact contains seven pieces, over the half of which were composed by leader himself, all performed absolutely expertly. The piece I like the best is engaging ballad "Piece for Wietek" played only by Muniak and Piotr Wylezol (it's composer), which reminds me some of the best and the most beautiful achievements of sax-and-piano duets. But, there is no wonder. The manner of playing, manner of improvisation of Muniak, the finest tone of his sax speaks for itself and makes him belong of the very top of sax players playing this kind of music. The Yearning Trio, the rhythm section of this quartet, is one of the most interesting jazz trios in Poland . The ballad character of the most tunes of the records is what Janusz Muniak feels best in. Once more he proves that he is the master of ballad, excellently accompanied by Yearning Trio. So, if you do not expect anything freaky and over-experimental then this music will reveal to you its beauty and will carry you into the world of relaxation and tranquility. W niedzielę 31 stycznia 2016 roku o godz. 13:10 zmarł w Krakowie znakomity saksofonista Janusz Muniak. W pierwszych dniach stycznia trafił do szpitala z rozległym zawałem serca. Jeszcze w sylwestrową noc grał w swoim klubie U Muniaka przy ul. Floriańskiej 3, tuż przy Krakowskim Rynku. Klub prowadził od 1992 r. Najczęściej występował tam ze swoimi zespołami, zapraszał zagraniczne gwiazdy, przyłączał się do jam session, a w przerwach występów potrafił podejść do baru i nalewać gościom piwo.

Był niezwykle sympatycznym człowiekiem, dowcipnym, ciepłym, a przede wszystkim znakomitym jazzmanem o wielkim sercu do muzyki. Nikt nie potrafił grać standardów z takim zaangażowaniem i dociekliwością jak on. Odkrywał w kompozycjach to, czego nie zauważali inni. Nasycone emocjami brzmienie jego saksofonu trafiało do każdego słuchacza, nawet jeśli nie interesował się jazzem. Dlatego w jego piwnicy U Muniaka zawsze było tłoczno. W 2015 r. otrzymał Nagrodę Złoty Fryderyk za całokształt twórczości.

Janusz Muniak urodził się 3 czerwca 1941 r. w Krakowie. Tam ukończył średnią szkołę muzyczną. Zadebiutował w 1960 r. w lubelskim zespole Witolda Miszczaka. Od 1963 r. występował w zespole Jazz Darings Tomasza Stańki. W 1964 r. wystąpił po raz pierwszy na festiwalu Jazz Jamboree z kwintetem Andrzeja Trzaskowskiego. Zagrał na słynnym albumie Trzaskowskiego „Sean". Współpracował i nagrywał z zespołami Krzysztofa Komedy. Z Tomasz Stańko Quintet nagrał znaczący album polskiego jazzu „Music For K" (1970) oraz wydaną na Zachodzie „Jazz Message From Poland" (1972) i „Purple Sun" (1973). Nagrał sześć albumów z zespołami Jana Ptaszyna Wróblewskiego, dokonał licznych nagrań m.in. ze Studiem Jazzowym Polskiego Radia, Stowarzyszeniem Popierania Prawdziwej Twórczości Chałturnik i kwintetem pianisty Jana Jarczyka.

Swoje zespoły prowadził od 1976 r., a przewinęła się przez nie plejada młodych polskich jazzmanów, którzy u jego boku często stawiali pierwsze profesjonalne kroki. Pozostawił niewiele płyt, ale wiele wspaniałych wspomnień koncertowych. Jego debiutem w serii „Polish Jazz" była płyta „Question Mark" (1978), na której zamieścił cztery autorskie kompozycje m.in. „Obertas", zainspirowaną polską muzyką ludową. Następnie w serii wydawnictwa Poljazz ukazały się dwa albumy: „Placebo" i „Janusz Muniak Quartet". Na płycie o prowokującym słuchaczy tytule „You Know Those Songs?" zagrał ukochane standardy.

W listopadzie 2015 r. ukazał się jego ostatni album „Contemplation" nagrany w lipcu 2012 r. w Studiu Radia Katowice z międzynarodowym kwartetem. Na dziesiątej autorskiej płycie znalazły się standardy, m.in. tytułowy utwór napisany przez pianistę McCoya Tynera, „Moja ballada" Komedy i „Annie" Muniaka. Realizatorem nagrania był Wojciech Przybylski, który zmarł w ubiegłym roku. Zastosował analogową technikę nagrania, by uzyskać brzmienie zespołów z lat 60. XX w.

Co ciekawe, poprzednią płytę autorską „Annie" Muniak wydał w 2002 roku. Jego fani narzekali, że wydaje tak mało płyt. Tych zapraszał na swoje koncerty, a grał często i długo. Na festiwalu Jazzowa Wiosna Zakopane 2010 wystąpił ze swoim kwartetem w Karczmie Biały Potok. Swój sztandarowy standard „Body and Soul" zagrał z takim uczuciem, że wzruszył wszystkich. A potem był jam session do piątej nad ranem. Janusz Muniak dał z siebie wszystko, a młodzi jazzmani, w tym pianista Paweł Kaczmarczyk, z zapałem dotrzymywali mu kroku.

Kiedy na festiwal Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa nie dojechał saksofonista Joe Lovano, który miał wystąpić z legendarnym pianistą Hankiem Jonesem, ten zażyczył sobie... Janusza Muniaka. Naszego saksofonistę dowieziono do Bielska-Białej z Krakowa i odbył się wspaniały koncert. Będzie brakować Janusza Muniaka na polskiej scenie jazzowej. I to bardzo. --- Marek Dusza, rp.pl

This is a long awaited recording by the legendary Polish Jazz saxophonist / composer Janusz Muniak, recorded in a classic quartet setting with Polish pianist Joachim Mencel, American bassist Willem von Hombracht and Austrian drummer Harry Tanschek. Together they perform nine tunes, eight of which are standards and one is an original composition by Muniak.

Although the album is credited to all four quartet members, it is obvious that iT celebrates the participation of Muniak, who last recorded an album in 2002, i.e. ten years before this material was recorded three years before it was released. Muniak's original composition on this album is the title track of that previous album.

It is obviously almost impossible to be even seemingly objective abut this music considering the legendary figure of the leader, who is without a doubt one of the great Godfathers of Polish Jazz. The album is entirely immersed in the mainstream Jazz idiom, both as far as the music which is being performed and the way it is performed. Muniak's tone is still intact, although he plays mostly softly and keeps his phrases short and sweet. The piano trio supporting him is solid and very amicable, supporting the leader all the way through. Everybody is extremely cautious, trying to be gentle and round, which means there are risks being taken at all.

In many respects this album makes me sad and reflective, as it points out that time is not standing still for anybody. Overall this is a nice mainstream album, no surprises, no risks, no news, a gentle wave of hand by a great Master saying "I can still do it". Respect! ---Jazzis, rateyourmusic.com

Chociaż płyta firmowana jest czterema nazwiskami to nie ulega wątpliwości, że centralną postacią i osobą, która miała największy wpływ na dobór utworów jest Janusz Muniak – legenda polskiego jazzu, wielki muzyk, zdobywca Złotego Fryderyka za całokształt działalności (2015). Na płycie znajdą się standardy oraz jedna kompozycja Janusza Muniaka.

Materiał został przygotowany w Krakowie, nagrany w lipcu 2012 r. w studiu Radia Katowice i zmiksowany w Studiu im. Agnieszki Osieckiej PR w Warszawie. Nagrania w całości zarejestrował i zmiksował nieodżałowany Wojtek Przybylski, wspaniały realizator dźwięku, który stworzył brzmienie wielu kultowych płyt.
