According to Jaga Jazzist mainman Lars Horntveth, the ten members of his Wu-Tang-like jazz clan have left their mark on some 300 different records, producing, arranging and playing on albums by Adjágas, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and assorted Scandinavian acts. It’s further proof, if any were needed, that these are musicians whose ambidextrous talent lets them change direction at the drop of a hat, something they’ve done once again on their latest thriller, One-Armed Bandit.

Led by Lars, Martin and Line Horntveth, this Norwegian ensemble are what all modern forward-thinking bands should aspire to – a group who don’t so much cut-and-shut man and machine (a la most indie-dance bands) as they do reconcile the two as a seamless, super-evolved, silver-plated being. Jaga Jazzist have been cutting through this fjord for 15 years now, moving from avant-jazz and lush post-club music to dazzling, horn-blasted future rock, and they show no signs of standing still.

Those worlds they’ve already visited – free-jazz, drum’n’bass, rock, electro – all pop up on One-Armed Bandit, but so do some mightily unexpected ones. Paying as much mind to jazz intellects as they do our collective booty, Jaga Jazzist have kicked out the jams on this fifth album, hitting a groovily propulsive, freaky, fun-loving patch of form by flying the “mothership,” as Lars once called the band, to the farthest reaches of electronic jazz-rock.

Tweaked with a heavy dose of prog, especially the becloaked OTT style of Zappa and Yes, this is properly cosmic stuff, bringing to the table FX-laden jams, afrobeat, Wagner-inspired bombast, baroque-inflected deep-funk and the knowing, horn-y sound of 1960s spy films, all of this intermingled with Jaga’s terrific fusion of breaks, synths, killer horn lines and taut, muscular rhythms. Few records in 2010 will contain songs quite so mind-bogglingly broad, playful, beguilingly pretty and intense as these slowly unfurling ensemble pieces.

Among the gems are the mathematical, angular post-rock of Prognissekongen and Music! Dance! Drama!, the latter doing what it says on the tin as it shifts between celestial electronics, sweeping horns and old-school car chase music rendered for an apocalyptic future. Tocatta is a fantastical, pulsing piece with glassy, repetitive melodies that acknowledges Steve Reich, while album closer Touch of Evil gallops along madly like a kind of ornate version of rave with touches of metal and Middle Eastern music. Pięć lat temu ich poprzednia płyta dosłownie wydarła mnie z butów. Z rozdziawioną gębą słuchałem jakiejś dziwnej, piekielnie atrakcyjnej muzyki, wykonywanej z zaskakującą lekkością, a do tego podobnej w zasadzie do … niczego. Albo do wszystkiego. Z perspektywy tych kilku lat , które minęły od czasu, kiedy „What We Must” posłuchałem i zrecenzowałem, uważam, że potraktowałem ten album nieco niesprawiedliwie. Dałem tylko 8 gwiazdek.

Zgodnie z regułą dwóch palców, lewej dłoni, oraz zgodnie z prastarą tradycją, moja ulubiona płyta roku ukazuje się tak mniej więcej przed Wielkanocą. W skrajnym wypadku nawet jeszcze w roku poprzednim (w okolicy Bożego Narodzenia 2005 roku dostałem promosa debiutu Gargamela, który oficjalnie miał wyjść dopiero w lutym). Rok 2010 nie był pod tym względem wyjątkowy, bo zanim wszystkie śniegi zdążyły stopnieć, to już wiedziałem, że będzie to „One-Armed Bandit” Jaga Jazzist. Ktoś bardziej zorientowany mógłby się zapytać czego tak późno – bo przecież ten krążek ukazał się już pod koniec stycznia, kiedy śniegi u nas nawet nie zamierzały topnieć, a sypało jak głupie (szczególnie na zachodzie Polski – Wrocław takiej zimy pewnie od Hitlera nie widział :) ). Ale ja dotarłem do tego krążka dopiero pod koniec marca.

Jeden z moich znajomych, który posłuchał tą płytę wcześniej autorytatywnie stwierdził – pierwszy najlepszy. Nie chodziło mu oczywiście o "The Thing Introduces...", bo to kilkadziesiąt sekund fałszowania równo ton w ton (coś jak “Forward March” z “First Circle” Methenego), tylko oczywiście o następny, tytułowy. Za pierwszym odsłuchem też bym się zgodził. Główny motyw, który momentalnie zapada w pamięć, przypomina temat przewodni z jakiegoś serialu sensacyjnego z lat sześćdziesiątych, albo siedemdziesiątych typu „Randall i duch Hopkirka”, „The Persuaders!”, czy „Święty”. Ale potem trudno nie zauważyć „Toccaty” – kilka nut granych staccato na fortepianie, z towarzyszącym w tle ksylofonem stanowi „kręgosłup” tego kawałka, a poszczególne instrumenty „dogadują” coś od siebie i tak przez cały utwór. Teoretycznie takie rozwiązanie może sugerować monotonię, praktycznie - to mój ulubiony utwór na Jednorękim Bandycie. Jeśli ktoś zna muzykę Philipa Glassa do filmu „Koyaanisqatsi” – to jest właśnie w takim klimacie. Oczywiście tytułowy też mi się bardzo podoba, poza nim na pewno jeszcze "220 V/Spektral", "Prognissekongen" i finałowy "Touch of Evil". Celowo nie piszę lepszy, gorszy – tu nie ma słabszych utworów, tytuł płyty roku do czegoś zobowiązuje. Najwyżej mogą mi się mniej podobać.

W porównaniu z „The Stix” i „Livingroom Hush”, „What We Must” była nieco inna – zespół zrezygnował nieco z elektroniki na korzyść „żywego” rockowego grania (jakoś nie chce mi przejść przez klawiaturę termin „nu jazz” – dla mnie to jakoś specjalnie jazzowe nie jest). „One-Armed Bandit” jest pewnym powrotem do przeszłości – elektroniczne beaty pojawiają się od czasu do czasu (głównie ostatnie dwa utwory). Na pewno jest ich mniej niż dawniej, ale i tak więcej niż na „What We Must”, gdzie ich praktycznie nie było. I to była słuszna koncepcja, bo w tej muzyce żywy perkusista sprawdza się lepiej niż maszyna. Automat nie swinguje. Kolejna różnica – nieco inny klimat krążka w porównaniu z poprzednim. Tam było tak spontanicznie, wesoło, beztrosko, pogodnie. Teraz jest poważniej, dojrzalej muzycznie. Brakuje tu może lekkości poprzednika, ale przebija go czymś, co można nazwać kulturą muzyczną – coś, co było wcześniej spontaniczne, teraz wydaje się wypracowane w studiu, w pocie czoła, ale efekt jest równie dobry.

Recenzję „What We Must” zacząłem od niezbyt pochlebnej opinii o nowym (wtedy) kanale Telewizji Polskiej TVP Kultura. Minęło pięć lat i z takiego nieco brzydkiego kaczątka wyrosło to na całkiem poważnego łabędzia – intelektualistę. Filmy, koncerty, kultowa już „Archiwizja” – oferta programowa dla widza, który nie uważa kolejnej edycji „Tańca z glizdami”, czy „Po co oni śpiewają” za wyżyny sztuki telewizyjnej – idealna. Ale niestety, ponieważ tzw. telewizją publiczną przez ostatnie kilka lat rządziła banda ignorantów, zajmujących się głównie polityką, to kasa się skończyła i te ćwierć-inteligenty oszczędności zaczęły właśnie od TVP Kultura. Obcięli budżet prawie do zera i od stycznia lecą same powtórki. A dla stada nawiedzeńców (tu wpisz nazwiska kilku swoich „ulubieńców”), którzy na Woronicza udają dziennikarzy, to jakoś kasy nie brakuje…

Kurde, gdzie by tu wstawić, że „Book of Glass” to numer bardzo w stylu Pata Metheny…? ---Wojciech Kapała, artrock.pl

Jaga Jazzist is an experimental jazz band from Norway that rose to prominence when the BBC named their first album, A Livingroom Hush (Smalltown Supersound/Ninja Tune), the best jazz album of 2002. The core of the band are brothers and main songwriters Lars and Martin Horntveth. Martin formed Jaga Jazzist together with Ivar Christian Johansen in 1994 while they still were in their teens, though Johansen later left the group. They are also prominent figures of the Norwegian pop act The National Bank.

The band features trumpets, trombone, electric guitar, bass, tuba, bass clarinets, Fender Rhodes, vibraphone and a rack of electronics, as well as strong melodies and rhythms. Talk Talk, Soft Machine, John Coltrane, Don Cherry, Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Squarepusher and Tortoise are frequently mentioned as sources of inspiration. Jaga Jazzist is widely considered to be one of the premier acts of the so-called nu-jazz movement of Scandinavia. Also, The Mars Volta cites Jaga Jazzist as one of their favourite bands.

‘What We Must’ is an album released in 2005 by the Ninja Tune label. This album was a change of direction for the 10 piece with Martin Horntveth moving to a more permanent position on the drums. This meant the group lost their Drum and Bass feel and began to sound more like a band, with the loss of electronics. The sound of the album has more of a post-rock and nu-jazz sound. The art for the album was by Kim Hiorthoy.

You could argue that with Konkurrent's In the Fishtank series, getting a great record is beside the point. The ten Fishtank albums released so far-- featuring bands like June of 44, Low + Dirty Three, Tortoise + The Ex, and Willard Grant Conspiracy + Telefunk-- all follow the same template: the label grabs bands that are touring through Holland, sticks them in a studio for a couple of days (most don't even rehearse) and persuades them to cut records that are more experimental, offbeat and, critically, more casual than they would ever make in their normal studio time. Although strict jazz and improv artists toss out live records and unrehearsed meet-ups as a matter of course-- Some Guys That Showed Up at the Velvet Lounge, Vol. 3 or what have you-- it's rarer for avant-rock, post-rock and jazz-informed bands to just scribble out an album and release it: LPs are events, and even EPs are policy statements.

It's telling that even with bands as adventurous as Norway's Motorpsycho and Jaga Jazzist, it's hard to imagine any of their albums coming out as loose or random as this thrown-together EP. Jaga Jazzist-- represented here by their horn section-- is the jazz/fusion/techno nonet known for their densely pancaked instrumentals and gymnastic arrangements. Motorpsycho is a long-running psych-rock band, extremely popular in their home country, whose work jumps from classic rock jams and pastoral acoustics to hypercatchy psychedelia. (Their latest record, It's a Love Cult, serves as a great introduction.)

The Jaga Jazzist horns have tagged along on a few Motorpsycho tours and done session work on their records, but In the Fishtank is their first real two-way collaboration. On the Mingus-referencing "Doffen Ah Um", a typically knotty Jazzist instrumental rubs against Motorpsycho's rock drums and grungy rhythm guitar; the soft psych-folk song "Pills, Powders and Passion Play" gets an extended instrumental break, highlighted by Mathias Eick's muted trumpet. ---Chris Dalen, pitchfork.com
