After two years, Down To The Bone is back with Dig It! Acid jazz is a far more club oriented version of contemporary instrumental that pulls from funk, hip-hop, and dance. Smooth jazz on steroids? No...Simply an area of contemporary music just as old but packed with far more rhythmic flavor and Dig It is certainly no exception! The harmonic heartbeat behind the band is Stuart Wade whose keen vision and lyrical sense have allowed him to assembly a true collective of top professionals that continue to raise the bar. As a producer, Stuart Wade has few contemporaries that can turn out consistently high quality releases that offer up a little something new each time out. A one word review, ridiculous!

There is no denying that acid jazz in England and acid jazz performed for the United States audiences are not exactly similar yet the two collectives assembled have the innate ability to artfully manipulate the sound and the rhythmic intensity to serve as harmonic chameleons adapting to any audience put before them. No artistic integrity was harmed in the production of what should be one of the best contemporary releases of the year. While vocal tracks on more contemporary releases can be somewhat feast or famine, you can "dig in" with Katie Leone on "Happiness Is A Healer" and "Put A Different Spin On It." Leone does extensive work with Incognito so the hand in glove fit is of little surprise. Oli Silk contributes heavily as well including two stellar tracks "Dropping Knowledge" and "The Bounce."

Down To The Bone continues to welcome one and all to the land of rhythm and groove! The soulful and soul filled flavors are deep and rich. No two DTTB releases sound the same, Dig It has certainly been worth the weight and DTTB fans have plenty to cheer about! Soul, funk and jazz...a groove you use! --- Brent Black, criticaljazz.com

I've been a fan of DTTB for about 10 years now. Ever since hearing Brooklyn Heights on a station out in California in 1999. I really enjoyed the bass and keyboards and great percussion generated. It was unlike what I had heard from anyone else, and I've been a fan of instrumental music all of my life. Words tend to get in the way IMHO.

Some of their stuff that followed Spread The Word didn't do much for me. Spread Love Like Wildfire brought it back, but then I didn't get the same charge from Supercharged (no pun intended). Future Boogie though has recaptured the sounds without immitating any previous tunes of the band that first caught my attention. I don't mind the vocals either. Hil St Soul is a great fit for the music. I've enjoyed listening to her smooth sounds since Spread/Wildfire.

This is another CD that went straight to my iPod after hearing the first track, and there has not been a disappointment. Favorites so far: Future Boogie, Smash and Grab (love hearing some good guitar with the brass), Spiderlegs and Get On It. These will get you motivated to speed up the treadmill at the gym, pick up the pace if walking/running, and help you get over the hump in that last bit of exercise. Great release Stuart. –R.Ray “RoXpat”

One of the UK's best jazz-funk groove bands, and one of the country's most successful jazz exports (their album "Manhattan To Staten" reached No 2 on the Billboard US Jazz Albums chart). Led by Stuart Wade, long-time producer/writer behind the band, the line-up includes vocalist Imaani, formerly of Incognito.

The new album - their ninth - is their strongest for several years, opening with a seven-minute masterpiece "Uptown Hustle". Other highlights include "Together We Stand" and "Watch Me Fly", featuring the glorious vocals of Imaani. Julian Crampton, also a former Incognito band member, keeps things moving nicely on bass. --- CD Description. Amazon.com

Sadly too many great British musicians and bands (across all kinds of genres) are more revered in the States than they are at home. The wonderful Down to The Bone are a case in point. Stuart Wade and his cohorts have been making their infectious brand of groove-heavy soulful jazz-funk since the mid nineties yet here in the UK their charms are known only to a small, committed number of fans. In the States, though, it's a different matter. There, they're followed by a huge numbers of devotees and back in 1999 they were the country's best selling independent jazz artists while their sound-defining 'From Manhattan To Staten' went to number 2 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

'The Main Ingredients' is the DTB's ninth studio album and I'm confident that this will be the one to enlarge their UK fan base. My confidence stems from the fact that the LP contains two stunning vocal tracks. The band don't often "do vocals" ( I can think of their Hil St Soul collaboration, 'It Should've Been You') but here they've come up with two corkers – 'Watch Me Fly' and 'Closer', both featuring Imaani. The former, which has a lovely Latin feel to it, boasts a strong melody line which perfectly suits the singer's passionate style; the latter is more of a structured groove than a "proper" song, but it's done gorgeously and should please the more adventurous modern soul crew... and that's my point. Many of the UK modern soul crowd are notoriously "conservative" and seem to have some kind of in-built resistance to instrumentals. Here the Imaani vocals should help them get into the rest of the album, and appreciate Down To The Bone if full flow. Then, they'll discover the lucid, sharp clarity of 'Uptown Hustle' – a typical DTB groove; then there are the looser, jazzier sounds of 'A Change Has Got To Come' and 'Second Nature'. 'Music Is The Key' is more laid-back and built around a catchy piano figure while 'A Universal Vibe' slows things down just a little and as the title implies the tune offers some delicious, almost hidden vibraphone. But then again, each track - though true to the Down To The Bone signature sound - boasts a little intrigue... adding to the album's attractions.

Down To The Bone are playing live dates in the UK and across Europe through the summer and with radio support too, 'The Main Ingredients' might finally see Down to the Bone achieve what they deserve. --- soulandjazzandfunk.com

Amazon.com

The cover and inside booklet of Down to the Bone's second album shows a variety of rare-groove record stores (both inside and out), displaying racks of records by Weather Report, Lonnie Liston Smith and Donald Byrd. The music itself is a delicious update of those same sounds -- yes, the grooves are tighter and have a bit of hip-hop bounce, but the soloing is far and away superior to most acid-jazz releases. Programmers and group frontmen Stuart Wade and Chris Morgans have the irresistible knack of translating their influences into an instantly familiar yet radically different style of music, and the results are uniformly excellent.
